Ask an English-speaking gear forum where cheap technical clothing comes from and someone will eventually say WORKMAN. Ask how to actually buy it and the thread stops. What WORKMAN Actually Is
WORKMAN is a Japanese retail chain that spent decades selling workwear — waterproofs, safety boots, cooling gear — to trades. Prices were set for people buying kit out of their own wages, and the durability specs were set by the fact that those people would be back to complain. Somewhere in the last several years, ordinary shoppers noticed that a ¥1,900 rain jacket built for a roofer also works for a rainy commute.
The company split its estate into two retail formats to serve both audiences. The official store locator lists 966 stores under the “work & active casual” format — the plain WORKMAN and WORKMAN Plus shops that still carry the trade range — and 139 stores under a “comfortable everyday / basic casual” format, which covers Workman Colors, Workman Girl (#ワークマン女子) and the WORKMAN Plus branches inside shopping centres. That is 1,105 stores in total.[1]
For a buyer overseas, that split matters for exactly one reason: the casual-format stores are where the pieces you have seen on Instagram live, and those pieces are the ones that sell out first and end up resold.
The Three Brands, and the Tech Names That Are Not Brands
WORKMAN’s own item-brand page lists three item brands,[2] and the online store carries the same three as its top-level brand filters.[8] Learn these and you can read any listing.

What confuses newcomers is that Japanese listings are full of other capitalised words that look like brands and are not. PROCORE, Ice Assist (アイスアシスト), MediHeal (メディヒール), WindCore and Wemotion 360 are line and technology names printed on tags — cooling fabric, recovery wear, fan-and-heater jackets, four-way stretch. They tell you what a garment does. They are not separate labels, and searching for them alone will return a much narrower slice of stock than searching ワークマン plus a category word.
Reading a summer listing: 遮熱 means heat-shielding, and you will see it paired with a claimed temperature drop such as 遮熱−7℃. 接触冷感 means cool-to-the-touch fabric. 空調服 / ファン付き means a fan-equipped jacket, which needs a battery unit that is usually sold separately and is a lithium battery — treat that as a shipping problem before you buy.
Why You Cannot Just Order From WORKMAN
The official online store at workman.jp is a normal, functional Japanese e-commerce site.[3] Its shipping guide is also entirely unambiguous about who it serves: one carrier (Sagawa Express), one flat domestic rate of ¥850 nationwide with a remote-island surcharge, free shipping over ¥10,000, plus store pickup and store hold. There is no international destination anywhere on that page.[4]
On top of that, a slice of the catalogue is flagged 店舗受け取り限定 — pickup at a physical store only, not shippable even inside Japan. Popular seasonal items land in that bucket regularly.

Cheap vs Cheapest: What the Numbers Look Like
“Cheap” is the current-season route: a proxy buys the exact item you want at the official retail price. You pay a service fee, domestic delivery to the proxy’s warehouse, then international shipping. For a ¥3,900 jacket that is entirely reasonable, and it is the only way to get a brand-new specific colourway in a specific size.
“Cheapest” is the second-hand route, and with WORKMAN the gap is unusually wide. Because the retail prices are already low, Japanese sellers do not treat the items as investments — they treat them as clothes they stopped wearing. A shirt that retailed at ¥1,500 is listed at ¥900 rather than at a collector premium, and the buyer overseas ends up paying single-digit dollars before shipping.

Sizing: The Only Thing That Actually Goes Wrong
WORKMAN is not a counterfeited brand. Nobody is faking a ¥1,500 work shirt. What goes wrong is sizing, every time, and it goes wrong in one direction.
- Japanese apparel sizing runs one to two steps smaller than US sizing and roughly one step smaller than EU. A Japanese L is close to a US M.
- Workwear is cut for movement in the shoulders but short in the sleeve and body compared with Western patterns. If you are over about 180 cm, check 着丈 (body length) and 裄丈 (sleeve length) numerically.
- Listings give measurements in centimetres, flat-laid. 肩幅 = shoulder width, 身幅 = chest width flat (double it), 着丈 = length, 股下 = inseam. Compare those to a garment you own; do not compare letters.
- Shoes use JP sizing in centimetres. JP 27.0 = US 9 for men, approximately.
Do not buy a fan jacket sight-unseen. 空調服 sets need a lithium battery, and lithium batteries are restricted or prohibited on most international routes. Buy the garment, source the battery locally, and check the voltage before you commit.
How to Buy WORKMAN From Overseas: Step by Step
- Decide current-season or second-hand. A specific new colourway in a specific size means the official store or Rakuten. Anything else, start on Mercari — the price difference is not marginal.
- Search in Japanese. ワークマン alone returns thousands of items; add a category word. ワークマン ジャケット (jacket), ワークマン パンツ (pants), ワークマン リュック (backpack), ワークマン 安全靴 (safety shoes), ワークマン 空調服 (fan jacket). Add 新品 for new-with-tags or 未使用 for unused.
- Read the measurements, not the size letter. Every serious Japanese listing includes 実寸 (actual measurements). Use them.
- Check condition codes. 新品未使用 = new unused, 未使用に近い = as good as new, 目立った傷や汚れなし = no noticeable flaws, 傷や汚れあり = visible flaws. Work clothing genuinely does get worn hard, so this field matters more here than in most categories.
- Buy several at once and consolidate. This is where the real saving lives. Three shirts in one box beats three boxes by more than the price of the shirts.
- Check your import threshold. The United States revoked its $800 de minimis exemption on 29 August 2025, so US-bound parcels are dutiable regardless of value.[6] Japan Post’s suspension of US-bound mail ended on 14 April 2026, so EMS and Sea Mail are running again with published per-destination rates.[5]
