TL;DR

Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 went on sale in Japan on 29 October 2026 at ¥62,980[8], but the console is sold only as the “Japanese-Language System (Japan only)”: Japanese UI, Japan-region accounts only[1][2]. The parts worth importing are the ¥12,980 Pro Controller with display stand, the ¥3,980 carrying case and the Ocarina of Time remake — none of them region-restricted.

  • Console: ¥62,980 MSRP, Japan-only system, on sale since 29 October at game retailers nationwide, where Nintendo notes some shops may be sold out[8]; through OneMall on 30 October 2026, Rakuten shops asked from ¥68,796; on 1 November a sealed Mercari copy is ¥63,900. Not recommended unless you have a Japanese Nintendo Account and read Japanese.
  • Pro Controller + stand: ¥12,980 MSRP, on sale since 29 October; on 30 October 2026 Rakuten shops listed it from ¥16,980, the Amazon Japan third-party seller at ¥16,800 and an unused Mercari copy at ¥15,000; that copy has since sold, and on 2 November an unused Mercari controller-and-stand set is ¥15,400.
  • Carrying case: ¥3,980 MSRP, on sale since 29 October; from ¥4,780 on Rakuten and ¥3,000 for an unused Mercari copy on 30 October 2026. Ocarina of Time (still a pre-order until its 5 November release): ¥8,980 MSRP, ¥7,755 on Amazon Japan with the early-purchase art cards, ¥8,050 on Rakuten with the same bonus.
  • Delivered to the US: the ¥17,479 Rakuten controller lands at about US$145.46; controller + case + game together about US$236.09 (prices and shipping quotes of 30 October 2026).
  • Check the radio note: Nintendo lists Japan, the US and UK/EU countries as regions where Japan-sold Switch 2 wireless hardware meets local radio rules[3].

As of October 2026, the interesting thing about the Zelda 40th Anniversary hardware is not the Triforce on the dock — it is that Nintendo has, for the first time, made a special-edition console that is only the Japan-locked variant. Importers who reflexively order the console are buying a Japanese-language machine that will not link to their existing account. The accessories are a different story, and they are where the value is.

This guide lays out the official lineup and prices, explains exactly what “Japanese-Language System (Japan only)” restricts, shows what the listings cost through OneMall on 30 October 2026, and walks through importing the Pro Controller, case and game with real shipping quotes.

The Zelda 40th Anniversary Lineup: Official Prices and Dates

Nintendo announced the set on 8 September 2026. Three hardware items went on sale on 29 October; the Ocarina of Time remake follows on 5 November and is not included with any of them[1][4][8].

Official product Japan release MSRP (tax incl.) What overseas buyers need to know
Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition (console, Joy-Con 2, dock, all with Triforce design) 29 Oct 2026 ¥62,980 Japanese-Language System (Japan only): Japanese UI only, links only to a Japan-region Nintendo Account. No game included.
Switch 2 Pro Controller + display stand – Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition 29 Oct 2026 ¥12,980 Accessory; pairs with any Switch 2. The display stand is included in the Japanese SKU.
Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition 29 Oct 2026 ¥3,980 Accessory; fits any Switch 2.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Switch 2 remake) 5 Nov 2026 ¥8,980 package / ¥7,980 download Sold separately — not bundled with the console.

The console’s product name in Japan literally includes “日本語・国内専用” (Japanese-language, domestic only), and Nintendo’s English release repeats it: “The Nintendo Switch 2 – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition sold in Japan will only be available as the Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System (Japan only).”[1]

What “Japan Only” Actually Restricts

Since June 2025 Nintendo has sold two Switch 2 models in Japan. The one on every retail shelf is the Japanese-Language System; the multi-language model costs ¥10,000 more and is sold only through the Nintendo Store[2]. The Zelda edition exists only in the first form.

Switch 2 “Japanese-Language System (Japan only)” Switch 2 “Multi-Language”
System language Japanese only 16 languages incl. English, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Korean
Nintendo Account that can be linked Country/region set to Japan only Any country/region
Nintendo eShop Japanese eShop only Your region’s eShop
Without a linked account you lose GameChat, virtual game cards, Nintendo Switch Online, the Switch App, eShop, friends —
Standard model MSRP ¥59,980 ¥69,980
Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition available as Yes — this is the only version Not offered

In practice: the system menu cannot be switched to English, a US, UK or EU Nintendo Account cannot be linked, and without a linked account you lose online play, GameChat and the eShop[2]. Nintendo’s support page adds that overseas-released package software is outside the operating guarantee on either Japanese model, the AC adapter is 100–240 V with a Japanese Type-A plug, and use abroad voids warranty and repair service[3]. If you already own a Switch 2, none of this matters — buy the accessories.

What You Can Import: Pro Controller, Case, and Ocarina of Time

The Pro Controller and carrying case are accessories with no language or account setting; they pair with any Switch 2. The Japanese Pro Controller SKU is the one with the display stand included at ¥12,980[1]. Ocarina of Time is a Switch 2 game card — Nintendo’s note above is about foreign cards on Japanese consoles, not Japanese cards on yours — and the Japanese package version ships with early-purchase art cards on Amazon Japan[5].

One honest caveat from Nintendo’s own overseas-use page: the wireless functions of Switch 2 hardware sold in Japan (console, Joy-Con 2, Pro Controller) are listed as compliant in Japan, the United States, and the UK and EU member states; Australia, Canada and Singapore are not on that list[3]. It is a certification statement rather than a technical block, but it is the reason we quote shipping to those countries without recommending the controller for them.

Line JPY USD (¥145 = US$1, OneMall rate on 30 Oct 2026)

Adding the case and the game to the controller raises the parcel from about 650 g to 1 kg and the US ECMS quote does not move — it is the same US$22.78 on 30 October 2026 — which is why we suggest ordering all three into OneMall’s free storage (90 days after arrival, 30 days after consolidation) and shipping once. DHL to the US is US$37.36 for the controller alone (3–7 days); EMS[7] to the UK is US$29.82 and to Germany US$25.92.

How to Buy Zelda 40th Anniversary Items From Japan: Step by Step

  1. Step 1 — Decide what you actually need. Existing Switch 2 owner: controller, case, game. No console yet: buy a multi-language Switch 2 or your local model; the Zelda console is Japan-only.
  2. Step 2 — Pick the listing. Search “Pro Controller Zelda 40th” on OneMall and compare Rakuten listings (cheapest on 30 October at ¥16,980) with the Amazon Japan listing (¥16,800) and unused Mercari copies (¥15,000 on the same day).
  3. Step 3 — Place the order through OneMall. Pay item price + fee now; the hardware is already out, so in-stock listings ship to OneMall’s warehouse when the shop dispatches.
  4. Step 4 — Add the case (from ¥4,780 on Rakuten) and pre-order Ocarina of Time (¥7,755 on Amazon Japan, releases 5 November). Storage is free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation), so the late-October and early-November arrivals wait together at no cost.
  5. Step 5 — Consolidate and ship. First 6 orders consolidate free. Choose ECMS for price, DHL for speed, EMS for tracked postal delivery.
  6. Step 6 — Expect duties. Game hardware is dutiable in most countries and the US no longer has a de minimis exemption (ended 29 August 2025).

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Japanese Zelda 40th Pro Controller work with my US or European Switch 2?

Yes. Pro Controllers have no region or language setting; the Japanese SKU differs only in the included display stand and the Japanese box. Nintendo’s wireless-compliance list covers Japan, the US and the UK/EU[3].

Can I just set the Zelda console to English?

No. The Japanese-Language System has no language or region setting to change; only Japanese is available and only a Japan-region Nintendo Account can be linked[2]. Nintendo did not announce a multi-language version of the Zelda edition[1].

Is the display stand sold separately in Japan?

Not in the official lineup — the Japanese product is “Pro Controller + display stand” as a single ¥12,980 item[1], which is why the Japanese SKU is attractive to overseas collectors.

Is the Amazon Japan listing the cheapest?

Not as of 30 October 2026. The ¥16,800 Amazon Japan listing is a third-party seller, ¥180 below the cheapest Rakuten shop at ¥16,980, and an unused Mercari copy was ¥15,000. All three were in stock the day after release; none of them is Nintendo selling direct.

Does Ocarina of Time on a Japanese game card play in English?

Switch 2 game cards take their language from the console. Nintendo’s product page lists the game at ¥8,980 packaged[4]; check the language list on that page before ordering if English text matters to you, and remember the early-purchase art cards are a Japanese retail bonus.

The Short Version

Skip the console unless you live in Japan. Order the Pro Controller with the stand, add the case and pre-order Ocarina of Time into the same OneMall parcel, and you get the complete 40th Anniversary set that actually works on your Switch 2 for about US$236.09 delivered to the US (30 October 2026 prices).
