Japanese drum brands make many of the drum kits, snares and pedals Americans already play: TAMA (made by Hoshino Gakki), Pearl and Yamaha are the big three Japanese drum manufacturers, and Canopus and SAKAE are smaller Japanese drum companies with a cult following. This guide is a roundup of each brand: who makes it, the series lineup from entry to pro (Imperialstar vs Superstar vs Starclassic, Export vs Decade vs Masters vs Reference, Stage Custom vs Tour Custom vs Recording Custom), shell materials and sizes, hardware and pedals (Iron Cobra, Speed Cobra, Dyna-Sync, Eliminator, Demon Drive), snare drums, Japanese list prices as of November 2026, and how to buy new or used drums from Japan as a US buyer. Prices are maker list prices in Japan (tax included) or Rakuten listing prices we saw on November 6, 2026.

Japanese Drum Brands at a Glance

Here are the Japanese drum set brands (and drum kit companies) this guide covers, with the series people search for most:

Brand Maker / based in History Known for Source
TAMA Hoshino Gakki (also makes Ibanez) Drum line traced from 1974; Hoshino founded 1908 Iron Cobra / Speed Cobra pedals, Starclassic, Superstar, STAR [1][2][3]
Pearl Pearl Musical Instrument Co. (Yachiyo, Chiba) Founded 1946 in Sumida, Tokyo; exports from 1956 Export, Decade Maple, Masters, Reference, Eliminator and Demon pedals [4][5]

Canopus Canopus (Nogata, Nakano, Tokyo) An artist quote on its site recalls the Zelkova snare as its only original product around 1988 Zelkova one-piece snares, YAIBA II, R.F.M., snare wires [9][10][11]
SAKAE SAKAE Osaka Heritage (Osaka) Since 1925; reborn as Osaka Heritage in 2019 Evolved, Celestial, Trilogy, Almighty; Japan Custom snares [12][13]

Are Tama drums Japanese? Yes: TAMA is the drum brand of Hoshino Gakki, a Japanese company that also owns Ibanez.[92] Is Pearl a Japanese brand? Yes: Pearl Musical Instrument Co. is a Japanese company headquartered in Yachiyo, Chiba.[4] Is Yamaha a Japanese drum brand? Yes, Yamaha is a Japanese company that traces its start to 1887 in Hamamatsu.[6] When people ask about the top drum set brands, popular drum kit brands, or a list of drum kit brand names and drum kit makes, these Japanese drum makers are usually on it alongside American and European companies. Brands, drum users’ favorites and price tiers are not ranked best to worst here, and we do not write gear reviews; famous names and cheap or affordable entry kits (Rydeen, Stagestar, Roadshow, Export) sit in the same catalogs as pro lines, and for a church, school or home studio the right kit is about size and budget; the right brand and series depend on budget, the sound you want (rock, jazz, funk, metal), and whether you need a complete beginner kit or a professional shell pack. For guitars, see our Japanese guitar brands guide.

Where Are Tama, Pearl and Yamaha Drums Made?

Drum queries like “Tama made in Japan”, “Pearl drums origin country” and “Yamaha drums where are they made” come up constantly. Here is what the makers say on pages we read today:

  • TAMA: the STAR series is described as made in Japan (MIJ), and STARPHONIC snares as crafted in Japan.[3][51] Hoshino Gakki opened a factory in Seto, Aichi in 1988 and set up a drum manufacturing company in Guangzhou, China in 2002, which started production in 2004.[1] TAMA’s pages do not state the country of manufacture for Starclassic, Superstar Classic or Imperialstar, so check the labels or badge in each listing (Tama Starclassic Japan vs China questions are best settled by the listing photos).
  • Pearl: Pearl started making percussion in Sumida, Tokyo in 1946, began exporting in 1956, built its Yachiyo headquarters factory in 1961, set up a Taiwan company in 1973 and a company in Hangzhou, China in 2005. Pearl International Inc. was founded in Nashville, Tennessee (TN) in 1979 (renamed Pearl Corporation in 1990).[4] Pearl’s US product pages could not be reached when we checked, so we cannot say which current series (for example whether Pearl Masters is made in Japan) are built where. Pearl (est. 1946) celebrates the founding year on its own goods.[93]
  • Yamaha: the Live Custom Hybrid Oak uses a traditional Japanese uzukuri shell finish, and PHX is described as handcrafted by Yamaha technicians.[72][90] Yamaha’s US pages do not list a factory country for each series.
  • Canopus and SAKAE: Canopus is a Tokyo drum company with its own shop in Nogata, Nakano; SAKAE’s Evolved kits are designed and hand-finished in Osaka.[9][13]

TAMA Drums (Hoshino Gakki)

Who makes Tama drums? Hoshino Gakki. The company began in 1908 as the musical instrument department of the Hoshino bookstore, set up the Tama Seisakusho (多満製作所) factory in 1962 to build electric guitars and amps, and opened a US arm in 1972 that became HOSHINO (U.S.A.) INC. in 1980.[1] The TAMA 50th anniversary site traces the drum brand from 1974: Imperialstar, Superstar and Artstar in the first decade; huge setups with several bass drums and even gong bass drums, and the Power Tower System, Lever Glide hi-hat stand and Iron Cobra pedal in 1984–1993; Starclassic, the second-generation Iron Cobra and Signature Palette snares in 1994–2003; Starclassic Bubinga, the Speed Cobra pedal and STAR drums in 2004–2013; and STAR hardware, CLASSIC stands and Club-JAM since 2014.[2] So when was Tama founded? The drum line dates from 1974 on TAMA’s own history site, though TAMA’s catalog archive also lists “Star Drum” catalogs from 1961, 1963 and 1967 and Swingstar from 1965.[94] Tama drums history fans can download old catalogs there: 1974 Imperialstar, 1976 and 1979 Superstar, Royalstar, Rockstar (1988–1999), Swingstar, Artstar ES, Artwood snare drums (1986), Granstar, Techstar, Octoban and the 1994 Iron Cobra and Starclassic catalogs.[94] Vintage Tama drum sets such as a Tama Superstar vintage kit, Superstar vintage snare, Tama Swingstar snare, Rockstar or Artstar snare (Artstar II) are sold used in Japan.[95]

  • Tama Superstar Classic: TAMA says the Superstar name goes back more than forty years; the Superstar Classic brings back the T-shape badge and low-mass single lugs, with a thinner 100% maple shell (toms 6ply 5mm, bass drum 8ply 7mm). Exotic finishes use Lacebark Pine outer plies.[21] Kits: CL32RZS (22×14 bass drum, 12×8 tom, 16×16 floor tom), CL50RS (20×16, 10×7, 12×8, 14×14 floor tom, 14×5 snare), CL52KS (22×18, 10×8, 12×9, 16×14, 14×6.5 snare) and the 7-piece CL72S.[21] Finishes: Caribbean Lacebark Pine Fade, Gloss Java, Sapphire and Garnet Lacebark Pine, Indigo Bintangor Burst, Gloss Natural Blonde, Dark Indigo Burst, Mahogany Burst, Tangerine Lacquer Burst, Transparent Black Burst, Indigo Sparkle, Midnight Gold Sparkle, Ice Ash Wrap and Natural Ebony Tiger Wrap.[21] Rakuten listings for the CL52KRS shell kit ran ¥123,200–¥135,520.[97] Older Superstar lines such as the Superstar Hyperdrive are not on TAMA’s current lineup page, so look for them used.
  • Tama Imperialstar (Imperial Star): a complete drum set with add-on drums (add-ons) available, 100% poplar 8mm 6ply shells, Accu-Tune bass drum hoops and MEINL HCS cymbals. US kits are IE62C and IE52C (22″), IE50C (20″) and IE58C (18″); finishes are Coffee Teak Wrap (CTW), Black Oak Wrap (BOW), Natural Zebrawood Wrap (NZW), Candy Apple Mist (CPM), Hairline Black (HBK), Hairline Blue (HLB) and Electric Yellow (ELY).[19] TAMA Japan lists the Imperialstar as IP52H6RC with an HP200P pedal and HT25 throne at ¥160,600, plus a Silent Pack of mesh heads and cymbal mutes (SPP522KC, ¥11,000) for quiet practice at home.[20] Tama Imperialstar vs Stagestar: both are poplar complete kits; Imperialstar adds the Accu-Tune hoops and MEINL cymbals.[19][18]
  • Tama Stagestar: the ST52H5C has a 22×16 bass drum, 10×8 and 12×9 toms, 16×15 floor tom and 14×5.5 snare with hardware, 14″ hi-hats and a 16″ crash ride; finishes are Lime Green Sparkle, Candy Red Sparkle, Cosmic Silver Sparkle, Sea Blue Mist and Black Night Sparkle.[18]

There are also the Pancake, Mini (kick and snare) and Flyer (14″ bass drum) kits.[14][15] The Cocktail-JAM packs a whole kit into two bags.[98]

2026 limited editions: TAMA Japan’s 2026 New Stuff & Limited Products include a Starclassic Performer Blacked Out Black limited kit, a STAR Reserve Bubinga/Walnut snare with a Cordia outer ply, a STAR Reserve G-Mahogany limited edition snare (TGHS1465S-SNT), POWERPAD Designer Collection snare bags and new Spartan hi-hat, snare and cymbal stands. TAMA Japan also posted a price revision effective November 1, 2026, so check the current list price on each page.[99]

Tama model numbers: on Starclassic Maple, a code like MAB2218DN reads: wood, finish (E exotic, A lacquer, R Duracover wrap), drum type (B bass drum, T tom, F floor tom, S snare), diameter, depth, tom holder base (D with, Z without) and hardware color (B or BN black nickel, U smoked black nickel, none for chrome).[27] This helps when a used listing only shows a part number. TAMA does not sell directly to consumers, does not re-wrap shells (wraps are fully glued), and does not offer a conversion of a single pedal into a twin pedal. Its FAQ explains the height adjustment of the 1st Chair drum thrones (TAMA’s thrones), points to a parts catalog with parts diagrams, and links a drum set assembly manual (PDF instructions for setting up a kit) and its marching snare, tenor and bass drums; TAMA also makes concert and marching percussion (marching tenors, the quads and quints of a drum line, and the Silver Armor carrier, a marching harness) and microphone (mic) stands.[41][3]

The first generation of the Tama Iron Cobra pedal arrived in 1984–1993 per TAMA’s history site, a second-generation Iron Cobra in 1994–2003, and the Speed Cobra in 2004–2013, so used listings span several generations.[2] Japan list prices as of November 2026:

  • Speed Cobra vs Iron Cobra: the Speed Cobra has a longer footboard than the Iron Cobra, which TAMA says accelerates the beater with less effort; the Iron Cobra 900 offers Power Glide (offset cam; often written Powerglide) and Rolling Glide (true round cam). Model codes: HP900 (900), HP600 (600), HP910 and HP310 (Speed Cobra), HP200 (200).[34][37][40][44] TAMA’s FAQ explains the two cams the same way.[41]
  • Parts and features: the 910 adds the Accu-Strike Cobra Beater;[35] Cobra Coil return spring, Quick-Hook beater mount, Speedo-Ring rocker cam with a ball bearing, Vari-Pitch beater holder, Para-Clamp II Pro hoop clamp, Oiles bearing hinge and hard carrying case on the 910.[34][37] Starclassic drums use Hold Tight washers to stop tension rods loosening.[27] Iron Cobra hard cases sell separately (PC900S ¥7,000, PC900TW ¥10,000 before tax).[41] Replacement parts such as an HP910 spring appear on Rakuten for a few hundred yen, the CB900PS Power-Strike Cobra Beater lists at ¥3,408 and an Iron Cobra / Speed Cobra beater head at ¥2,200.[102][103]

Counterfeit warning: Hoshino Gakki warns that imitation TAMA goods are sold online, including Iron Cobra copies (a seller on a China cross-border site was fined in 2024). Warning signs it lists: no serial number or stamp behind the head, unusual shapes, blurred photos, extremely low prices, colors or specs that were never made, and a hidden logo.[92] Buying from Japanese stores and marketplaces with clear photos lowers the risk, but OneMall does not verify brands or models.

Pearl Drums

Pearl drums history: Pearl Musical Instrument Co. (パール楽器製造) was founded on April 2, 1946, became a corporation in 1952, began exporting in 1956 and has its headquarters in Yachiyo, Chiba; it also makes flutes.[4] Pearl drums turned 80 in 2026, and its Japanese web shop is selling Pearl Drums 80th Anniversary Fest goods along with drum books such as the Rudimental Map and a FUNKY Sueyoshi drum method book.[93] Pearl’s US website (pearldrum.com) could not be reached when we checked, so specs below come from Pearl Japan’s own news pages and current Japanese listings.

Older Eliminator twin pedals such as the P-2002C (P2002C) appear used from ¥19,800, alongside the current P-2052C double at ¥71,280.[112] Also listed: the Demon Drive XR Machined double pedal (P-3502D, ¥102,850) with its own DEMON XR spring (SG-022, ¥1,650) and felt beater (B-350XRF), and the P-932 Longboard double pedal (¥35,200); the Eliminator Mono Pro is listed with a long footboard.[113][111] Pearl Japan describes the Demon Chain as a lightweight round aluminum die-cast wheel with a double chain, and the Demon Drive as a direct link with a self-aligning bearing.[114] We could not check cam differences between Eliminator models on Pearl’s own pages. Pearl Eliminator vs Demon Drive is therefore chain versus direct drive; Eliminator vs Iron Cobra or Speed Cobra comes down to the feel of the cam and footboard, so try both if you can.

Yamaha Drums

Yamaha (founded 1887) says its Recording Custom series, launched in the 1970s, redefined the high-end drum set.[6][7] The Yamaha drums lineup from entry to pro, with Japanese list prices as of November 2026:

  • Yamaha Recording Custom: 100% birch 6-ply shells, 30-degree/R1.5 bearing edges, 1.6mm triple flange hoops and the Y.E.S.S. mount. Steve Gadd worked with Yamaha’s R&D team for three years on the 2016 version, which has heavier lugs, floor tom brackets with wing bolts, and his preferred 20″ lifted bass drum.[75][76] Bass drums run 18″ to 24″ and toms 8″ to 16″, including an 18 x 14 bass drum.[75] Yamaha also lengthened and centered the pedal beater rod on that kit.[76] Rakuten listings on November 6 included a Recording Custom 4-piece at ¥474,100 (Red Autumn, Polar White and Real Wood finishes listed) and the aluminum snare RAS1465 at ¥70,400.[115] Recording Custom metal snares come in aluminum (2 sizes), stainless steel (2 sizes) and brass (3 sizes); wood snares list at ¥69,300–¥74,800 in Japan.[116][117] Older Recording Custom kits (such as the 9000 era) are not in the current lineup; a vintage 1979–1980s YD-9000R snare (SD955R, 14×5.5) was listed at ¥71,196.[118]
  • Yamaha Stage Custom Birch: sold since 1995; 100% birch shells with a hand-lacquered finish, Absolute lugs and Y.E.S.S. mounts, with individual drums (single shells) from 8″ to 24″ so you can build your own configurations.[69] SBP2F5 has a 22×17 bass drum, 16×15 floor tom, 12×8 and 10×7 toms and a 14×5.5 snare; SBP0F5 has a 20×17 bass drum.[70] Stage Custom steel snares come in two sizes.[116] Rakuten listings: SBP2F5 with hardware ¥165,000 (Raven Black); Bop Kits in Cranberry Red, Natural Wood and Classic White; a 20″ SBP0F5 shell pack in Honey Amber at ¥109,780;[119] Bop Kit ¥67,980–¥72,600; Stage Custom Hip ¥81,400 (Matte Surf Green).[120] Older versions such as the Stage Custom Advantage are not in the current lineup.
  • Yamaha Tour Custom: 6-ply 100% maple 5.6mm shells with satin lacquer, Absolute lugs, inverse DynaHoops and YESS mounts; shell packs with 22″, 20″ and 18″ bass drums, toms 8″–13″, floor toms 14″ and 16″, snares 14×5.5 and 14×6.5.[71]
  • Absolute Hybrid Maple and Live Custom Hybrid Oak: Absolute Hybrid uses a wenge core between maple plies, Y.E.S.S. III and aluminum die-cast hoops.[74] Live Custom Hybrid Oak uses a 7-ply oak/phenolic hybrid shell and the Japanese uzukuri finish.[72][73]
  • Yamaha PHX: an 11-ply 10.3mm maple-kapur-jatoba-kapur-maple shell with 30-degree edges and Y.E.S.S. II.[77] Yamaha Japan suspended PHX orders from June 29, 2026, and the ash model has ended production.[7] At ¥1,008,700 for a four-drum shell set, it is the most expensive kit in this guide.[67]
  • Rydeen and Junior Kit: the Rydeen is a 6-ply poplar beginner acoustic drum set (RDP2F5 22″, RDP0F5 20″) in solid or glitter finishes, eight in total (Burgundy Glitter and Black Glitter shell sets listed around ¥57,400); the Junior Kit (JK6F5 + HWJK, ¥154,000) was developed with Manu Katché’s ideas.[64][67][118]
  • Yamaha pedals and hardware: FP9 (FP9D direct drive, FP9C chain, DFP9 double), FP9500, FP8500, FP7210A and a classic reissue nylon-belt pedal; HEXRACK II racks, 800 and 700 series hardware and the HHS9D hi-hat stand.[121][122] The FP9 lists at ¥39,600 single and ¥93,500 double in Japan.[123]
  • Yamaha DTX electronic drums: DTX kits, modules and pads; plus EAD modules, trigger modules and drum triggers for digital/acoustic hybrid setups. Rakuten listings ran from ¥61,690 (DTX402KS) through the DTX6K to ¥319,000 (DTX8K), and a used DTX400K was ¥28,980.[8][124][106] Electronic drum modules are electrical goods: check the power adapter rating for US outlets, and anything with a battery should be checked against shipping rules before you buy.

Canopus Drums

Canopus is a Tokyo drum maker (Nogata, Nakano) named after the star Canopus. It describes three lines: Regular (R.F.M., Birch, Ash), Vintage (Neo-Vintage NV60-M1 and M2, recreating 1960s sounds) and R&D (acrylic drums and multi-colored finishes).[82][9]

Series What it is Source
R.F.M. (Reinforcement Maple) American maple with reinforcement rings used to shape tone; Club Kit with 15″ bass drum up to Grand Kit with 26″ [78]
Birch 8ply birch, no reinforcement, aimed at rock [79]
Ash White ash + poplar 7ply, oil color finishes, “dry, seasoned” sound [80]
Mahogany Mahogany + poplar + birch 6ply [81]
Neo-Vintage NV60-M1 / M2 Recreates 1960s sounds; NY Kit with 16″ bass drum [82][83]
YAIBA II Forced-hardening lacquer, no reinforcement; 24 Kit, SB Groove Kit, Bop Kit; snares in maple and birch [10][84]
Zelkova One-piece hollowed snare (14mm) from 200-year-old zelkova; flagship; also a Zelkova drum set [11][85]
Session Kit SK-16S / SK-20S 8ply white birch shell packs, oil finishes; SK-16S includes a BD riser [86]
Session Superior snare SM-1455 / SM-1465 10ply Asian maple 8mm, UV lacquer, classic tube lugs; Russet Brown, Navy and Purple Fade [87]
Piccolo Bronze BZ-1440 14″x4″ piccolo snare with a 1mm bronze shell [88]
Type-R Bullet (maple 10ply), Magnum (3mm brass or stainless), Cannon (carbon fiber) snares [89]

The Canopus Zelkova snare (HS-1450 14×5, HS-1465 14×6.5) has a one-piece hollowed shell from 200-year-old zelkova (akagi), and Canopus says this wood is getting scarce.[11] YAIBA II finishes include Rose Sparkle, Antique Brown Matt, Antique Ebony Matt, Indigo Matt, Antique Natural Matt and Dark Wine Red Matt.[10] Canopus snare wires (Vintage Snare Wire, modeled on 1960 Slingerland wire, and Back Beat wire in 20, 30 and 42 strands) are popular upgrades on any brand’s snare; the Vintage wire comes with a snare wire cord fitted as standard, and accessories such as Bolt Tight (for smoother tension rods) and the KM-1 Brass Key Bundle Muffler, a magnetic snare muffler developed with Takashi Kashikura, are sold too.[125][126][11][127] Because magnetic materials are on OneMall’s prohibited list, check before adding a magnetic muffler to an order.[128] Canopus product pages quote endorser reviews and artists (its endorsement roster); Stevie Wonder visited its booth at NAMM 2016 and chose a YAIBA II Groove kit.[11] The Custom Shop CANOPUS store in Japan lists a Baritone snare (14×7 walnut/birch, ¥96,800) and the Type-R Magnum 14×6.5 stainless (¥198,000), and also buys used drums, explains vintage drums and offers maintenance for snares and drum pedals. The same store sells its own drumsticks and Zildjian and SABIAN cymbals.[129] On Rakuten, YAIBA II snares listed at ¥55,000–¥69,850 and used Canopus snares from ¥35,800; a used Canopus R.F.M. Standard Kit was ¥330,000.[130][106]

SAKAE Drums (Osaka)

SAKAE says it has made drums since 1925 and was reborn in 2019 as SAKAE OSAKA HERITAGE. Lead artisan Shun Tsuji joined Sakae Rhythm in 1994 and worked on product planning for major drum manufacturers from 1995; SAKAE-brand drums launched in 2009, the Almighty kit in 2011 (sold mainly in Japan), Trilogy in 2013 with a more vintage sound, and the flagship Celestial in 2015.[12] The current Evolved Japan Custom kit uses North American maple: a 7-ply 7.2mm bass drum, 6-ply 5.6mm toms and 7-ply 6.4mm floor toms, the Cradle mounting system, 29 shell colors and 10 powder-coated lug finishes, plus maple snares in 14×5.5, 14×6.5 and 13×6.5.[13] On Rakuten, SAKAE Osaka Heritage maple snares listed from ¥46,200, walnut Japan Custom snares around ¥56,980, phosphor bronze snares up to ¥143,000 and the AXP-1000 pedal at ¥35,200.[131]

Shell Materials and Drum Sizes

Shell wood and size explain most of the sound difference between Japanese drum series:

Material How makers describe it Examples Source
Maple Warm, clear; TAMA calls it the most popular shell material today Starclassic Maple, STAR Maple, Superstar Classic, Tour Custom, Decade Maple, Masters, SAKAE Evolved [27][71][13]
Birch Punchy; Yamaha says birch gives short decay, quick attack and good separation Stage Custom Birch, Recording Custom, Canopus Birch and YAIBA II Groove [69][76][79]
Poplar Full, warm tone with medium attack (TAMA) Imperialstar, Stagestar, Club-JAM, Rydeen, Woodworks snares [19][18][64]
Walnut Low-mid warmth STAR Walnut, Starclassic Walnut/Birch, S.L.P. G-Walnut [30][25][52]
Bubinga Dense, fat low end; TAMA says it introduced bubinga to the market STAR Bubinga, S.L.P. G-Bubinga [29][52]
Oak / hybrids Hybrid shells mix woods (or phenolic) for more attack or dynamic range Live Custom Hybrid Oak, Absolute Hybrid Maple, PHX [72][74][90]
Mahogany, ash, zelkova Vintage-leaning or one-piece shells Canopus Mahogany, Ash, Zelkova; Export uses mahogany and poplar [81][80][11][5]
Metal and acrylic Steel, brass, bell brass, aluminum, copper, bronze, acrylic Metalworks, STARPHONIC, Sensitone, Reference One Brass, Crystal Beat [54][51][91][63]

Shell thickness matters too: thin shells resonate more; TAMA says it slims each ply rather than using fewer plies to make a 5mm shell that stays strong.[27] Typical kit sizes:

Configuration Typical sizes Japanese examples Source
22″ bass drum kit 22×16 or 22×18 BD, 10″ and 12″ toms, 16″ floor tom, 14″ snare Imperialstar IP52H6RC, Stage Custom SBP2F5, Export EXX725, Roadshow RS525 [20][70][5]
20″ bass drum kit (often called a fusion size) 20×16 BD, 10/12 toms, 14″ floor tom Rydeen RDP0F5, Imperialstar IE50C, Tour Custom TMP0F5 [64][19][71]
18″ bass drum (bop / jazz / compact) 18×14 BD, 12″ tom, 14″ floor tom Stage Custom Bop Kit, Tour Custom TMP8F3, Club-JAM 18×12, Decade Maple Bop Club Kit [68][71][15][58]
16″ or smaller bass drum Club and street kits Canopus NV60-M1 NY Kit (16″), Canopus Session SK-16S, R.F.M. Club Kit (15″), Club-JAM Flyer (14″) [83][86][78][14]
24″ and 26″ bass drums Big rock kits Stage Custom single shells to 24″, R.F.M. Grand Kit 26″ [69][78]

Sizes and measurements are in inches: a 10 inch tom, 14 inch snare, 16 inch floor tom and 22 inch bass drum are the usual building blocks. Snare drum sizes are written diameter × depth: 14×5, 14×5.5, 14×6, 14×6.5 and 14×8 are common; 13″ and 12″ snares work as side snares; a 14×10 can double as a floor tom.[52][91] TAMA quotes sizes like 22″x18″ (diameter first); Yamaha’s spec tables use the same order.[21][75]

Tama vs Pearl vs Yamaha: Comparing Series

These are spec comparisons from maker pages, not quality rankings:

  • Entry kits (Pearl Roadshow vs Tama Stagestar vs Yamaha Rydeen): all three are poplar or mixed-wood complete kits aimed at beginners; Roadshow and Stagestar include hardware and cymbals.[56][18][64]
  • Pearl Export vs Tama Imperialstar vs Yamaha Stage Custom: Export uses mahogany and poplar shells; Imperialstar uses 100% poplar with MEINL cymbals; Stage Custom Birch is a 100% birch shell set with a hand-lacquered finish.[5][19][69]
  • Pearl Decade Maple vs Tama Superstar Classic vs Yamaha Tour Custom: all are maple kits below each brand’s pro lines; Superstar Classic uses 6ply 5mm toms, Tour Custom 6-ply 5.6mm with satin lacquer.[58][21][71]
  • Pro tier: Pearl Masters and Reference, Tama Starclassic and STAR, Yamaha Recording Custom, Absolute Hybrid and PHX, Canopus R.F.M. and YAIBA II, and SAKAE Evolved.[61][62][3][132][78][13]
  • Against US and European brands: shoppers also compare these series with Ludwig (Supraphonic, Classic Maple, Evolution), DW (5000, 9000, Collectors, Performance), Gretsch (Catalina, Renown), Mapex (Armory), Sonor (SQ1) and PDP (Concept). We only cover the Japanese side here; compare shells, sizes and hardware the same way.
  • Pedals: Iron Cobra 900 vs Speed Cobra 910 vs Dyna-Sync (TAMA), Eliminator Redline vs Demon Drive (Pearl), FP9 (Yamaha). The Japan list price of an Iron Cobra 900 or Speed Cobra 910 single pedal is the same ¥38,500.[35][38]

Japanese Drums vs Drum Kits: What Is Taiko?

If you searched “Japanese drums” and meant the traditional instrument: what are Japanese drums called, what types are there, and what is the definition of taiko? Here are the names from Kotobank’s dictionary entries. 和太鼓 (wadaiko) is the general term for drums traditionally used in Japan, including the dadaiko (大太鼓), gakudaiko and shime-daiko; they are still made as crafts in Mie, Tochigi and Tottori.[133] The big Japanese drum called odaiko (大太鼓) is a large drum used in bugaku court dance, kabuki and festivals, and the barrel-shaped riveted nagado-daiko is the most common taiko seen at festivals and shrines.[134][135] Taiko are a different world from TAMA, Pearl or Yamaha drum kits; this guide focuses on drum sets.

Buying Used Drums From Japan

Japan has a deep used drum market: on Rakuten alone we saw a used TAMA Starclassic Maple kit (¥143,000), Starclassic Bubinga and Walnut/Birch snares, an Artstar II maple snare, Pearl Masters snares, Yamaha Maple Custom kits, Canopus R.F.M. kits and Yamaha DTX electronic kits listed on November 6, 2026.[95][106] Tips:

  • Older Pearl series in used listings: Masters Custom (MCX), Vision (VMX Vision Maple), Professional MX and 1970s President Export kits all appeared on November 6, 2026.[106]
  • Read the model code (identification): TAMA abbreviates bass drum BD, tom TT, floor tom FT and snare SD; codes such as CL52KRS (Superstar Classic), IP52H6RC (Imperialstar), EXX725 (Export), DMP925SP (Decade Maple), RBP / RBB (Recording Custom) and SBP (Stage Custom) identify series and sizes.[22][20][57][58][115][70]
  • Check condition in photos: bearing edges, wraps (TAMA does not re-wrap shells), lugs, tom mounts, floor tom legs, bass drum spurs, snare throw-off and snare wires, and pedal footboard, cam, spring and beater.[41]
  • Spare parts, setup and tuning: common replacement parts are the hi-hat clutch, snare stand basket, snare strainer mechanism, rims (hoops), pedal chain or strap, foot plate, drive shaft, connecting rod, toe stop, beater (felt or plastic) and springs. Keep a drum key tool kit for setup, tuning and pedal adjustments, and check the drum dimensions (diameter x depth) against your cases.
  • Serial numbers: we found no public serial number lookup on the maker pages we could read, so rely on model codes, badges and photos rather than serial-number dating.
  • Avoid copies: use Hoshino Gakki’s warning signs (no serial number, very low price, blurred photos, colors never made).[92]
  • Know what you are buying: some listings are toys or miniatures, such as a nanoblock Pearl Masters model (¥6,613) or drum-set ornaments; read titles carefully.[106]

How to Buy Japanese Drums From the US

TAMA does not sell directly to consumers, and most Japanese music stores ship only within Japan, so a proxy service is the usual route.[41]

  1. Search in Japanese: タマ (TAMA), パール (Pearl), ヤマハ ドラム, カノウプス, サカエ, plus スネア (snare), ペダル (pedal), ツインペダル (double pedal), ドラムセット (drum set), シェルキット (shell kit) and 中古 (used).
  2. Size up the shipping first: a full kit ships in big boxes, and international shipping is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5,000). For example, a 60 × 60 × 50 cm box counts as 36 kg even if the drum inside weighs far less. Shell packs, single snares and pedals are much cheaper to ship than a full kit with stands and cymbals. See our volumetric weight explainer and ECMS vs DHL vs EMS comparison.
  3. Consolidate: several pedals, snares or hardware pieces bought from different sellers can ship together.
  4. Check prohibited items: sprays, flammable liquids such as lighter oil and paint, wet batteries and magnetic materials are on OneMall’s prohibited list, and items regulated under the Washington Convention (CITES) cannot be shipped.[128] Drum oils, sprays or polish in a lot will be removed; electronic drum modules or amps with batteries or speakers should be checked before you buy. For drums with exotic woods, confirm the listing does not involve CITES-regulated material.
  5. Protect the shells: add a wrong/missing item check (¥200) or unboxing photos (¥500 / ¥700) at the Tokyo warehouse, and package reinforcement for snares and shells.

OneMall buys from Japanese marketplaces such as Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Rakuten and Amazon Japan, and from other Japanese online stores (including maker web shops) through LinkBuy. Items that need a lottery entry, purchase limit, Japanese identity verification or a merchant account cannot be purchased. International shipping is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5,000) of the box the warehouse uses.

Service fees are ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. The first six orders consolidate free; each additional order costs ¥100. Storage is free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation). Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD.

US buyers: since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies. OneMall currently ships to the United States by ECMS, DHL and Japan Post EMS (DDP — declared value up to USD 2,500, duties prepaid with the shipping fee); the live quote at checkout shows which lines accept your parcel.

If something breaks: damage caused inside the warehouse by OneMall is refunded at the item’s purchase price; damage in international transit is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid, and must be reported within 24 hours with the order number, photos and a full unboxing video. Loss in transit is handled by the carrier, and OneMall helps confirm with the carrier and file the claim within 72 hours. Duties and customs fees are paid by the buyer.

OneMall is a Japan-based proxy shopping and forwarding service for international buyers. We purchase from Japanese marketplaces — Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Rakuten, Amazon Japan, Suruga-ya, ZOZOTOWN and more — and ship worldwide, with LinkBuy covering any Japanese online store by URL. Service fees are ¥300 per item on most marketplaces and from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy, the first six orders consolidate free, and items are stored free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation). Optional unboxing photos, wrong or missing item checks and package reinforcement let buyers verify condition before international shipping. This blog is written by the OneMall team and documents fees, shipping rules and Japanese marketplace know-how for overseas shoppers.
