TL;DR
Vintage clothes from Japan are bought online from secondhand apps such as Mercari, Rakuma and Yahoo Flea Market, where sellers grade condition with fixed labels and good listings add flat measurements. A proxy buys and ships for you; budget for the item, a per-item service fee, both shipping legs and US duties.
- 古着 (furugi) means used clothing; 古着風 or ビンテージ風 in a title means made to look vintage.
- A Big E tab (LEVI’S in capitals) dates Levi’s to before 1971, but Levi’s revived it on premium products in 2018, so check the care tags.[1]
- Our six-piece basket, priced on November 4, 2026, runs from ¥4,500 (a LIZ LISA dress) to ¥25,000 (a Coach hobo bag).
- Pack tight: on November 4, 2026, DHL quoted the same 4 kg US parcel at US$242.66 in a big box and US$94.54 in a compact one.
As of November 2026, a secondhand Carhartt Detroit jacket on Rakuma is listed at ¥23,100 (US$159.39), while new Detroit Jackets on Carhartt WIP’s US store list at $248 to $368.[2] Shipping and duties narrow that gap, but it is why buying second hand clothes from Japan can pay, if you read listings the way Japanese buyers do.
The traffic used to run the other way: Levi Strauss & Co.’s historian writes that by the 1980s, vintage seekers from as far away as Japan traveled to the American West to hunt old Levi’s.[1] Our team priced pieces from the OneMall Japan’s Vintage Finds page and related searches to show how to buy vintage clothes from Japan: what each piece is, how to read grades and sizes, and what a basket costs to buy and ship.
Where to Buy Vintage Clothes From Japan Online, and What Furugi Means
The furugi meaning is plainer than the hype. 古着 is written with the kanji for “old” and “wear,” and Japanese dictionaries define it as clothes grown old with wear.[3] A furugiya (古着屋) is a used-clothing dealer, and the trade is old: in Edo, today’s Tokyo, 13 used-clothing wholesalers formed a guild between 1648 and 1652.[4]
Furugi covers a decades-old band tee and last season’s knit alike, so “vintage” on a Japanese listing is the seller’s word, not a grade. Vintage in Japanese is written ヴィンテージ or ビンテージ, and adding 風 (“style”) gives 古着風 or ビンテージ風: made to look vintage.
Hoping to do your Japanese vintage shopping online in one Japan vintage online shop or on one Japan vintage clothing website? Our six pieces came from four platforms, so comparing the best Japanese vintage stores online means comparing marketplace sites like these:
| Platform | In our basket | Service fee |
|---|---|---|
| Mercari (flea-market app) | LIZ LISA dress | ¥300 per item |
| Rakuma (flea-market app) | Levi’s 702XX Big E jeans, Carhartt Detroit jacket | ¥300 per item |
| Yahoo Flea Market | Coach hobo bag | 3% of the price, ¥200 minimum, ¥300 maximum |
| Rakuten (retail mall) | Carhartt tee, New Era cap (both new) | ¥300 per item |
Chains such as 2nd STREET sell online too; our guide to Japanese vintage clothes stores compares the shops.
What the Pieces Are: Big E Levi’s, Vintage Carhartt, Tees, Y2K and Coach
How to identify Big E Levis and date them
Levi Strauss & Co. first sewed its Red Tab onto 501 jeans on September 1, 1936, with LEVI’S in capitals; in 1971 it became “Levi’s” with a small e, hence Big E vs little e.[1]
| Period (per Levi’s) | Red Tab lettering | What else to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1936–1952 | LEVI’S in capitals, one side only | Tab on 501s from 1936, jackets from 1937 |
| 1953–1970 | LEVI’S in capitals on both sides | No care tags inside |
| 1971 onward | “Levi’s” with a lowercase e | Production and care tags from the 1970s |
| 2018 onward | Big E back on premium products | Modern care tags mark the reissue |
Levi’s adds that almost all pairs made before the mid-1980s have a single felled inseam, one line of stitching down the inner thigh,[5] and that 10% of Red Tabs are left blank except for the ® symbol.[1]
For Big E Levis Japan listings, search リーバイス ビッグE, or BIGE as the featured pair’s title spells it: lot 702XX, W32, graded やや傷や汚れあり on Rakuma at ¥13,000. Its seller calls it a 2004 Japan-made 復刻 (reissue) of the 1936 501XX and notes a shortened hem, so this capital E marks a reissue, not a pre-1971 pair; check the care tags anyway. For Japan-made denim, see our Japanese denim brands guide.
How to tell vintage Carhartt: the Detroit jacket
Carhartt WIP describes the Detroit Jacket as cut slightly shorter to sit at the belt line, with a zipped front, a corduroy collar, welt pockets and a zipped chest pocket; it was introduced in denim with a blanket lining, later came in Dearborn Canvas, and has stayed “largely unchanged since.”[6] So the silhouette will not date a vintage Carhartt Detroit jacket; check the labels and care tags instead.
Search カーハート デトロイト for a Japan vintage jacket like the featured one: a brown duck 3XL on Rakuma, graded 目立った傷や汚れなし, at ¥23,100 with free shipping inside Japan. Its seller lists flat measurements but no year. For Japanese-made work jackets, see our Japanese workwear brands guide.
Japanese vintage tees, band tees and vintage-style caps
Not every featured piece is secondhand. The Carhartt University Script tee is new spring-summer 2026 stock on Rakuten, and the New Era Coca-Cola cap is new, with 古着風 and ビンテージ風 in its title. Buying basics new and one vintage piece used is a sound budget split.
For secondhand Japanese vintage tees, search Mercari for バンT 古着 (band tee, used). On November 4, 2026 it found a Stooges tee in XL at ¥1,800 and a Led Zeppelin tee in 2XL from a used-clothing shop at ¥2,500. Read past dates in titles: that Led Zeppelin shirt names a 1977 US tour, yet its title and description call it a 復刻 (reissue), and an unused Madonna tee named for the 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour describes its look as ヴィンテージライク, “vintage-like.”
Y2K Japanese fashion and LIZ LISA
Y2K is a tag sellers add, not a date. Two basket pieces carry it: the Coach bag and a LIZ LISA (リズリサ) floral mini dress labeled 姫ギャル (hime gyaru) Y2K, ¥4,500 on Mercari and graded “Slight damage or stain”; its seller notes a stain on the lace. For the brand and its jirai kei neighbors, see our LIZ LISA and jirai kei brands guide.
Vintage Coach bags: what the listing tells you
The featured bag is listed as a vintage Coach エルゴ (Ergo) one-shoulder hobo with a Y2K tag; its description gives black グローブタンレザー (glove-tanned cowhide), about 25 cm tall, 27 cm wide and 6.5 cm deep, but no model number, at ¥25,000 on Yahoo Flea Market. The seller’s text also says where the bag was bought; we do not repeat seller claims or authenticate items. What you can do is document it: the bag is bought directly on Yahoo Flea Market, its price qualifies for free exterior photos, and unboxing photos or an item check can be added (prices below).
How to Read Condition Grades and Sizes on Vintage Clothes From Japan
Mercari asks sellers to pick one of six condition grades,[7] and the Rakuma and Yahoo Flea Market listings in our basket use the same wording. Learn the Japanese; any English label is a translation.
| Grade (Japanese) | Plain English | Mercari’s definition | In our basket |
|---|---|---|---|
| 新品、未使用 | New, unused | Bought recently, never used | — |
| 未使用に近い | Nearly unused | Used a few times, no marks | — |
| 目立った傷や汚れなし | No noticeable marks | Marks you see only up close | Carhartt jacket, Coach bag |
| やや傷や汚れあり | Some marks | Marks that show it is used | Big E Levi’s |
| 傷や汚れあり | Marks | Large marks anyone can see | — |
| 全体的に状態が悪い | Poor overall | Visible marks or damage throughout | — |
The third grade is not “flawless”: the seller of our Rakuma Detroit jacket, graded 目立った傷や汚れなし, still notes 多少の使用感, “some signs of use.” Read the photos as closely as the words.
Listings that measure a garment use terms such as 実寸 (actual measurements, in centimeters), some taken 平置き (laid flat): 肩幅 shoulder, 身幅 chest, 着丈 length, 袖丈 sleeve. Tag sizes travel badly: the Carhartt tee’s chart writes XL as LL, and a Yahoo Flea Market seller describes a Carhartt jacket tagged L as “about an XL” because it is US sizing. Secondhand orders cannot, in principle, be cancelled once placed, so measure before you buy.
What Vintage Clothes From Japan Cost: A Live Basket, Fees and Shipping
The six-piece basket as listed on November 4, 2026 (dollar figures as shown on each listing that day):

| Six pieces | Four platforms | — | ¥79,020 | US$545.24 |
On top of the item prices:
- Service fee: OneMall charges ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. Yahoo Flea Market uses the Yahoo formula (3%, ¥300 maximum), so all six pieces here carry ¥300; the checkout figure prevails.
- Domestic shipping: what each seller charges, billed with international shipping; the Detroit jacket and Coach listings ship free inside Japan.
- Consolidation: the first 6 orders consolidate free, ¥100 per additional order, so this six-order basket stays free.
- Storage: 90 days of free storage after arrival (30 days after consolidation).
- Photos and checks: free exterior photos on items over ¥20,000 (the jacket and bag); unboxing photos at ¥500 or ¥700; a ¥200 wrong/missing item check on Mercari, Rakuma and Yahoo Flea Market purchases.
- Duties: Since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies.[8] The buyer pays them.
How to ship clothing for less
International shipping is priced on chargeable weight: the larger of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height in centimeters ÷ 5,000), measured on the outer box the warehouse uses. Clothes compress; boxes do not. On November 4, 2026, our shipping calculator priced the same 4 kg US parcel at US$242.66 by DHL in a 60 × 40 × 30 cm box, billed as 14.4 kg and over ECMS’s size limit, but at US$50.55 by ECMS or US$94.54 by DHL in a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box, billed as 4.8 kg. For a US address, the calculator’s estimated average transit is 10–20 days by ECMS and 3–7 days by DHL.
Step by step: buying a furugi basket
- Step 1: Search in Japanese: 古着 plus the brand in katakana, such as リーバイス ビッグE, カーハート デトロイト, リズリサ or コーチ.
- Step 2: Read the grade, then zoom into tabs, labels and care tags.
- Step 3: Compare the 実寸 with a garment you own.
- Step 4: Order. Mercari sellers must ship within 7 days, and in-stock items take an estimated average of 3–5 business days from seller dispatch to our Tokyo warehouse.
- Step 5: Add photos or an item check where it matters.
- Step 6: Consolidate and repack into one compact box.
- Step 7: Choose ECMS or DHL and pay for international shipping; dispatch takes an estimated average of 1–3 business days after payment.
Conclusion
Budget furugi buying comes down to three habits: read the Japanese grade and the measurements, date a piece by its tags rather than its title, and ship everything together in the smallest box that fits. Do that, and buying vintage clothing from Japan becomes a matter of reading, not luck. Start with the pieces on the Japan’s Vintage Finds page at OneMall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does furugi mean?
Furugi (古着) is Japanese for used clothing: clothes grown old with wear.[3] It covers any secondhand garment, vintage or not.
What is the difference between Big E and little e Levi’s?
A Big E tab spells LEVI’S in capitals. Levi’s did stop using it in 1971, when it switched to a lowercase e, so a Big E points to a pre-1971 pair unless it is the 2018 reissue on premium products, which has modern care tags.[1]
Is it cheaper to buy vintage clothing from Japan?
Sometimes, at the item level: on November 4, 2026, a secondhand Detroit jacket was listed at ¥23,100 in Japan, against $248 to $368 for new ones on Carhartt WIP’s US store.[2] Add fees, duties and shipping, which started at US$50.55 by ECMS for a compact 4 kg box that day, before comparing.
How do I know if Japanese vintage will fit?
Go by the 実寸, not the tag. Measure a garment you own laid flat and compare; tags vary, as the LL-for-XL chart and the US-size L described as about an XL show.
