TL;DR
Mandarake is a Japanese chain of mostly second-hand manga, toy and anime-collectible stores that began inside Nakano Broadway. The Mandarake English store ships abroad, with DHL listed for US addresses, and its auctions accept overseas bidders. To combine several of its stores and other Japanese shops in one box, buy fixed-price items through OneMall LinkBuy.
- Stores: 18 locations on the official list, from Sapporo to Kokura, feeding one online catalog.
- Direct orders: each store checks out and ships separately, in yen, without Japan’s 10% consumption tax.
- Mandarake auction: overseas bidders join with their own account; LinkBuy cannot bid.
- LinkBuy: 5% of the item price (min ¥200, max ¥1,000 per item), Visa, Mastercard or PayPal in USD, one consolidated parcel.
As of October 2026, Mandarake’s online store and auctions are running again after an August server breach, and ordering direct works better than its reputation: English checkout, tax-free export prices, DHL to the US. The weak spot is the multi-store haul, because each store packs and bills its own box.
Below: what Mandarake Japan’s stores carry, how its online store and auctions treat US buyers, and when a proxy route like LinkBuy wins.
What is the Mandarake shop, and where are its stores?
Mandarake (まんだらけ) opened its first used-manga shop inside Nakano Broadway in 1980 and incorporated in February 1987.[1] Nakano Broadway still holds many of its sections: the Nakano floor guide lists 34 shop sections across four floors.

The official store list shows 18 branches as of October 9, 2026.[2] Tokyo has Nakano, Shibuya, three Akihabara-area shops (Complex, an eight-floor building near JR Akihabara Station; Complex 2; and CoCoo for sofubi and designer toys) and two in Ikebukuro, Lalala and Nayuta. Elsewhere: Omiya (opened June 2026), Utsunomiya, Sapporo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Umeda and Grand Chaos (Grandchaos) in Osaka, PUCK2 in Kobe, Fukuoka and Kokura. Sahra, located in Katori, Chiba, handles mail orders and buyback only.
What does Mandarake sell? Mostly second-hand stock, sold as is, with any damage noted on the item page.[3] The auction categories show the range: pre-1965 manga, soft vinyl and tin toys, garage kit models, dolls, anime cels, signed books, trading cards, idol goods, doujinshi and cosplay. Complex’s toy floors add prize figures, and the auction home page is promoting a ZENBU catalog with a Godzilla special.
Does the Mandarake online store ship internationally?
Yes. The Mandarake online store has a Japanese version for Japan residents and an English one, labeled MANDARAKE EARTH, for global buyers living outside Japan; that English site at order.mandarake.co.jp is the Mandarake store online you want. It draws on the inventory of all physical stores plus Sahra, with keyword search and a store filter.
Mandarake shipping to the US is narrower than the worldwide list suggests: the country table marks DHL as the only available method for US addresses (checked October 9, 2026).[4] US-bound orders worth ¥50,000 or more must be insured.
- One store, one box. Each store has its own checkout, and orders from different stores cannot be combined.[5] You can add same-store items to an unpaid order within 96 hours. That is why shipping gets expensive on multi-store hauls.
- Stock is checked by hand. Staff confirm availability before you can pay, which usually takes 3–5 days by the store’s own estimate; you then have five days to pay.
- No cancellations. Payment methods are a 3D Secure credit card (Visa, Mastercard or JCB), PayPal or Amazon Pay, all in yen, and cancellation requests are not accepted once you order.[3]
Tax works in your favor: orders shipped abroad are exempt from Japan’s 10% consumption tax, so the English store usually shows tax-free prices.[3] Import charges (duties, often called tariffs) are separate. Since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies.[6] Duties, taxes and clearance fees are paid by the buyer on either route.
How does the Mandarake auction work?
There are two online auctions, and overseas buyers can join both with a Mandarake account plus a one-time credit-card authorization.[7]
- Everyday Auction: new lots daily from across the chain, maximum-bid (absentee) bidding, free to join, no handling charge; pay within ten days.
- Big Web Auction: six events a year (January, March, May, July, September, November) around the printed Mandarake ZENBU catalog, with live bidding. Bidders abroad pay a ¥550 participation fee per event or buy the catalog; winners add a 10% handling charge and pay by month-end.
Bids cannot be retracted, and each lot is processed by the store that listed it, so wins from different stores ship separately.
The August incident moved bidding for the ZENBU 135 Big Web Auction to September 9–15, 2026, and its payment deadline to October 15.[8] LinkBuy buys fixed-price items, so it cannot place these bids, which need your own account. LinkBuy also cannot buy items that need a lottery entry, have purchase limits, or require Japanese identity verification or a members-only account.
How do I buy from the Mandarake shop from the USA?
Order direct when your haul sits in one store: tax-free export price, one DHL box. Use LinkBuy when you pull from several stores, add other Japanese shops, or want to pay in USD with Visa, Mastercard or PayPal. The trade-off: orders delivered inside Japan, including to our Tokyo warehouse, pay the 10% consumption tax, and each store bills its own domestic shipping. See also our LinkBuy guide.

Step-by-step: buying Mandarake items with LinkBuy
- Step 1 — Copy the link. Find the item in the online store and copy its page link.
- Step 2 — Submit it. Paste the link on the LinkBuy page with the item name, specification, tax-inclusive price and notes (English-store prices usually exclude the 10% tax, so add it). Use Add to Submission List for several items.
- Step 3 — Review. Our team reviews the request and sends an SMS on approval; pay within 24 hours or the order is canceled automatically.
- Step 4 — First payment. Pay the item price plus the LinkBuy fee by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD. If it sells out first, you get a full refund, service fee included, within three business days.
- Step 5 — Arrival and consolidation. In-stock items usually reach our Tokyo warehouse 3–5 business days after the store ships (estimated average). You get 90 days of free storage after arrival (30 days after consolidation), and the first 6 orders consolidate free, ¥100 per additional order.
- Step 6 — Second payment and shipping. Pay international shipping plus the domestic shipping the store charged. US parcels go by ECMS or DHL, billed on chargeable weight: the larger of actual weight and volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000, cm to kg) of the outer box the warehouse uses.
Optional unboxing photos (¥500 or ¥700) let you check a cel or garage kit before it ships; exterior photos are free above ¥20,000 and full unboxing photos are free above ¥30,000.
Mandarake vs Suruga-ya vs Mercari: which shop fits?
These are the usual alternatives when a listing sells out. Mandarake is a specialist chain with its own stores, condition notes and auctions; Suruga-ya (often typed surugaya) presents itself as an online shop for games, used books, DVDs, CDs, trading cards and figures; Mercari describes itself as a C2C marketplace where individuals buy and sell.
Suruga-ya and Mercari are among our integrated platforms, searched and bought on our site. Our service fee is ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. Mandarake goes through LinkBuy at 5%, which stays at the ¥200 minimum under ¥4,000 and caps at ¥1,000 from ¥20,000 up, and orders from all three can share one consolidated box. Conclusion: direct for one store, LinkBuy for the rest
One store’s worth of finds? Order direct: English checkout, tax-free pricing and DHL make it simple, and the auctions are open to you too. Once a haul spans several stores or other Japanese sites, separate boxes are where costs pile up. Paste your Mandarake link into OneMall LinkBuy and our team handles the order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Mandarake website down, or was it hacked?
It is working again. After detecting unauthorized access to its servers on August 27, 2026, Mandarake paused the online store and auctions for maintenance, then reopened mail-order on September 5 and auctions on September 7. It reports no evidence that card data or passwords were compromised; if you still get a password-reset email you did not request, ignore its links.
Does Mandarake ship to the USA, and how long does it take?
Yes. As of October 9, 2026, its country table marks only DHL for US addresses, and paid orders usually ship within three business days. How much shipping will cost depends on destination, box size and packed weight.
Is Mandarake tax free for overseas buyers?
Online orders shipped outside Japan skip the 10% consumption tax. In stores, tourists staying under six months can buy tax-free on ¥5,000 or more before tax with a passport. Orders delivered to a Japanese address, including LinkBuy orders sent to our Tokyo warehouse, include the tax.
Can I cancel a Mandarake order?
Not a direct order: cancellation requests are refused once an order is placed, except an accidental duplicate reported within 10 minutes. Through LinkBuy, you can cancel after payment only until the store accepts the order; after that, change-of-mind cancellations are not possible.
Can LinkBuy bid on Mandarake auctions?
No. LinkBuy buys fixed-price listings, while auction bids need your own Mandarake account with card authorization, so bid directly. LinkBuy also cannot buy items that need a lottery entry, have purchase limits, or require Japanese identity verification or a members-only account.
Is Mandarake legit and safe to order from?
It has traded since its first Nakano Broadway shop in 1980, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market in 2000 and runs 18 locations today. Staff note damage on each listing, though age-related wear is not listed and unopened items are not checked inside. After the August breach, it rebuilt the affected server.
