TL;DR
Animate is a Japanese anime goods specialty chain with 125 stores[1] and a Japanese-language online shop. That shop ships only to Japanese addresses and takes credit cards only if they were issued in Japan, so US fans buy from animate USA or order Animate listings through OneMall at ¥300 per item.
- Animate Online Shop (アニメイト通販) ships only to addresses in Japan.[2]
- Animate payment methods include PayPal, PayPay and animate Pay, but credit cards must be Japan-issued.[3]
- animate Pay (アニメイトペイ) is a top-up balance in the Animate app, not a card.[4]
- Animate is integrated on our site: order, pay in two stages in USD, and ship from our Tokyo warehouse by ECMS, DHL or Japan Post EMS (DDP).
- Lottery entries and event-only goods are out of reach: our Animate page orders listings on sale online, and LinkBuy refuses lottery, purchase-limited and members-only items.
As of October 2026, Animate is still expanding at home, with Animate DiverCity Tokyo Plaza (its first new Tokyo store in about 11 years) opening in early December[1], yet its online shop still will not take a US address. Our take: check animate USA first, and go through Japan only for what it does not list.
Below: what Animate sells, how to pay, what shipping costs in Japan and how to reach the US, whether you browse the Animate shop online or visit Tokyo.
What is the Animate shop? Inside the Animate anime store chain
Animate Co., Ltd. (株式会社アニメイト), based in Toshima, Tokyo and established in July 1987, calls itself an anime goods specialty store on its corporate website (also in English). In October 2026 it counted 125 stores across all 47 prefectures of Japan[1], selling character goods, books and comics, CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays, games, art supplies and cosplay items.
The Animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store, five minutes on foot from the east exit of Ikebukuro Station, has a floor guide that runs from a 208-seat theater on B2F to event halls on 9F, with animate ONLY SHOP pop-ups on 7F. Fairs reach further: the LIMBUS COMPANY autumn fair (October 3 to November 1, 2026) runs at Animate stores nationwide and on Animate Online Shop.
The Animate Japanese online shop is Animate Online Shop (アニメイト通販, animate-onlineshop.jp), which has used CLUB animate logins since March 2026. It offers five types of bonus (特典), including Animate-only bonuses and online-only bonuses that stores do not carry.
Animate Japanese site vs. the animate USA online shop
Outside Japan, Animate’s global store finder lists one North American store, animate Los Angeles, plus Asian cities such as Shanghai, Seoul, Taipei and Bangkok. The LA store opened in Torrance’s Del Amo Fashion Center on September 30, 2023, and its page links to the animate USA online shop: “Shipping available to the U.S. and Canada!”[5] The US shop sells anime, game and VTuber merch, CDs, Blu-rays, manga and art books.
If animate USA stocks what you want, buy there; the Japanese site covers items only it lists and bonuses Animate offers only in Japan.
How do you pay at Animate? Animate payment methods and animate Pay
Animate Online Shop lists cash on delivery (plus a ¥309 fee), credit cards, convenience-store prepayment, ATM, carrier billing, PayPal, atone, NP deferred payment, PayPay, animate Pay, UnionPay and Alipay[3]. Payment is taken once Animate secures your item.
The catch for overseas buyers: Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Diners Club cards work only if they were issued in Japan (日本国内発行)[3]. Animate PayPay checkout also does not work inside the Animate app. And whatever you pay with, the parcel must go to an address in Japan[2].
In stores, Animate takes animate Pay, cash, credit cards, e-money and QR codes (reservation deposits are cash only), and the Ikebukuro Flagship Store’s store page adds tax-free shopping.
What is animate Pay (アニメイトペイ)?
animate Pay is Animate’s top-up e-money: you load a balance, then pay with a barcode in the Animate app in stores or pick it at online checkout[4]. Setup means installing the app, registering with CLUB animate and completing a start-up step, and SMS verification may be required. Store top-ups are cash only, in ¥1,000 units up to ¥49,000; online top-ups are capped at ¥10,000 each and ¥30,000 per 24 hours[4].
Does the Animate shop ship internationally? Animate Online Shop international shipping and fees
No. Animate’s FAQ says the online shop does not currently ship to overseas addresses[2]. Animate shipping fees inside Japan are ¥594 for home delivery (¥894 in some areas) or a flat ¥280 by mail service, plus ¥309 for cash on delivery[6]. One order ships free once a category reaches its threshold: books ¥3,300, CDs ¥6,600, and character goods, cosplay, calendars and trading card games ¥8,800, tax included; figures and art supplies are excluded.
Animate says stock for home-delivery pre-orders normally arrives at its warehouse one to two days before release, and back-ordered items can take about a month. Animate’s support site also warns that high volume is delaying all shipments, pre-orders included (up to 5 business days for home delivery, per its notice of October 6, 2026).

How do I buy from the Animate shop in Japan from the USA?
Animate is one of our integrated platforms. On 2026-10-09 we checked four live Animate listings (a ¥660 acrylic card, a ¥792 manga volume, a ¥880 badge and a ¥12,100 figure set), and each carried a ¥300 service fee.
- Step 1: Search our Animate page. Listing titles are in Japanese, so the Japanese title or character name helps.
- Step 2: Open the item page. It shows Animate’s domestic shipping (¥280 on the badge, ¥594 on the figure set) and the service fee. Pre-orders carry a “Pre-sale” label; check the release date, and follow the source link for Animate’s bonus details.
- Step 3: Click Buy It Now, or Add to Cart to combine items, and pay the first stage: the item price plus ¥300 per item, by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD.
- Step 4: We buy from Animate and the item ships to our Tokyo warehouse, usually 3–5 business days after the store ships (estimated average); pre-orders leave Animate once stock arrives.
- Step 5: Items get 90 days of free storage after arrival (30 days after consolidation), and the first 6 orders consolidate free, ¥100 per additional order.
- Step 6: Pay the second stage: international shipping plus the Japanese domestic shipping Animate charged. US parcels go by ECMS, DHL or Japan Post EMS (DDP), priced on chargeable weight, the larger of actual and volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000, cm to kg) measured on the outer box we ship; dispatch usually follows 1–3 business days after payment (estimated average).
- Step 7: Since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies[7]. Duties, taxes and clearance fees are paid by the buyer.
For anime shops that are not integrated, paste the product link into LinkBuy; our team reviews it and you pay within 24 hours of approval (fees and rules are in the LinkBuy shopping guide). See also our LinkBuy guide, plus our Melonbooks guide and Mandarake guide for two anime shops that work this way.
Can you get Animate bonuses, lottery items and ONLY SHOP goods from overseas?
Bonuses, yes, with a caveat. Animate hands out bonuses (特典) first-come, first-served and does not accept cancellations because a bonus ran out[8]. Its FAQ also says a “bonus” label does not guarantee one, so order early, especially for first-press or early-reservation bonuses.
Lotteries are different. Animate runs event applications and lotteries through CLUB animate, its free members-only service, and ONLY SHOP purchase limits vary by event. Our Animate page orders listings that are on sale on Animate Online Shop, so lottery entries are not something we can place; through LinkBuy, items that need a lottery entry, have purchase limits, or require Japanese identity verification or a members-only account cannot be bought.
Conclusion
For US fans, the sensible order is animate USA first, then the Animate shop in Japan for items animate USA does not list, online-only bonuses and Japanese pre-orders. When you are ready, search Animate listings on OneMall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Animate Online Shop ship to US addresses?
No, Animate Online Shop does not currently ship to overseas addresses. Use the animate USA online shop, which ships to the US and Canada, or order Japanese listings through our Animate page.
Can I use a US card or PayPal on the Animate Japan online shop?
Credit cards must be issued in Japan. PayPal and PayPay are listed, but the order must still ship to an address in Japan. Through us, you pay by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD.
What is animate Pay, and does it help from overseas?
animate Pay is a top-up balance in the Animate app for Animate stores and online orders. It needs a CLUB animate account with SMS verification and does not change the Japan-only delivery rule.
How much does it cost to buy from Animate through you?
Service fees are ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy, so Animate items pay ¥300 each. You also pay Animate’s domestic shipping, international shipping by ECMS, DHL or Japan Post EMS (DDP) and any US duties; the first 6 orders consolidate free, ¥100 per additional order.
Will my Animate bonus (特典) be included?
Only if Animate still has it when your order is secured. Bonuses are first-come, first-served, and Animate does not accept cancellations because a bonus ran out, so order early.
Can you enter Animate lotteries or buy ONLY SHOP items for me?
No. Lottery entries run through CLUB animate, Animate’s members-only service, and store-only goods and event tickets have no online listing for us to order. Through LinkBuy, items that need a lottery entry, have purchase limits, or require Japanese identity verification or a members-only account cannot be bought.
