TL;DR
Yes, Japan Post shipping to the US has resumed. Our checkout now lists Japan Post EMS (DDP) for US addresses when a parcel’s total declared value is USD 2,500 or less. Under DDP, duties and taxes are calculated and prepaid as part of shipping, so you won’t pay them separately at delivery.
- Value limit: USD 2,500 total declared value per parcel. Packages declared above that are not supported for US shipping.
- Duties: prepaid under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid). The final amount depends on the contents and declared value.
- Speed and cost: 10–12 days (estimated average) and $37.63 for a 1 kg box in our calculator on October 12, 2026.
- Best use: big, light boxes. EMS (DDP) priced a bulky 1 kg carton at $37.63, while ECMS and DHL billed its volume.
- Eligibility: weight, size, item type and carrier availability decide whether Japan Post appears when you create your parcel.
As of October 2026, the news for US buyers is simple: there is a postal option again. We paused Japan Post methods for US addresses on August 26, 2025, so this Japan Post US shipping update ends a pause of more than a year — with a hard value line and a new way of paying duty attached.
If you have been asking “does Japan Post ship to USA addresses again?”, here is the answer and the fine print: the USD 2,500 limit, how DDP shipping works, live costs next to ECMS and DHL, and how to select it. OneMall buys from Japanese marketplaces for overseas shoppers and ships from our Tokyo warehouse, so everything below applies to parcels you send through us.
What changed: Japan Post shipping to the US is back
Our shipping notice for US customers is short. Japan Post shipping is now available for eligible packages with a total declared value of USD 2,500 or below, and packages with a total declared value over USD 2,500 are not supported for shipping to the United States. Which methods you can use still depends on four things:
- Package weight and dimensions
- Item type and value
- Shipping restrictions for specific products
- Current carrier availability
On the US lane, the Japan Post option is EMS (DDP). EMS travels by air, and when we checked the calculator on October 12, 2026, regular EMS, Japan Post Airmail and Sea Mail were still not offered for US addresses — so Japan Post EMS to USA addresses now means EMS DDP. You may also see it written as JP Post.
Why Japan Post stopped shipping, and how it came back
Some buyers called the pause a Japan Post US ban, but it was a suspension tied to new US customs and tariff rules. A US executive order ended duty-free de minimis treatment for goods sent by mail from August 29, 2025, so Japan Post decided to stop accepting US-bound gifts over USD 100 and goods for sale from August 27, 2025.[1] Letters, documents and gifts under USD 100 kept moving, but Japan Post was not delivering online purchases to US addresses until 2026. Japan Post resumed accepting all postal items to the US on April 14, 2026, on condition that senders prepay duties to US Customs through a qualified party approved by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).[2]
Under Japan Post’s conditions effective July 24, 2026, purchased goods valued up to USD 2,500 need their duties prepaid and a DDP label; only documents and bona fide gifts of USD 100 or less skip that step.[2] CBP indefinitely suspended the $800 de minimis exemption for mail in June 2026, and its new postal informal entry process for mail valued at $2,500 or less took effect on July 24, 2026.[3]

USD 2,500 and DDP: the rules for Japan Post shipping to the US
Why the line sits at USD 2,500
USD 2,500 is where US customs paperwork changes. Shipments valued at $2,500 or less are generally eligible for informal entry,[4] and CBP’s 2026 mail rule requires formal entry for mail importations above $2,500, with limited exceptions.[3] Japan Post’s duty-prepayment conditions stop at the same USD 2,500 line,[2] and our Japan Post option follows it. The value that counts is the total declared value of the whole parcel, not any single item in it.
What DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) covers
DDP stands for Delivered Duty Paid, one of the Incoterms® 2020 rules issued by the International Chamber of Commerce to spell out who handles, and pays for, customs formalities.[5] For Japan Post shipments to the US with a declared value of USD 2,500 or below, DDP applies: applicable customs duties and taxes are calculated and prepaid as part of the shipping process. You will not need to pay applicable import duties or taxes separately upon delivery, subject to customs clearance requirements.
Two things stay the same. US customs duties are still the buyer’s cost — DDP moves the payment from the doorstep to the shipping step. And the final duties and taxes depend on the contents and declared value of your package, so two parcels of the same weight can carry very different duty. For rates by product category and the current tariffs on goods made in Japan, see our guide to US import tax on purchases from Japan.
How the other two US methods handle duty
Japan Post isn’t the only prepaid route. ECMS accepts US-bound parcels only on condition that freight and customs duties are prepaid,[6] so duty is settled before dispatch there too. DHL Express does not prepay: DHL clears the parcel and bills the duty, plus its own clearance charges, to you after arrival.
Japan Post to USA cost and delivery time vs ECMS and DHL
Japan Post EMS (DDP) sits in the middle of our three US methods: a shorter transit range than ECMS, a longer one than DHL, and pricing on actual weight. These are the figures our shipping calculator returned for a Los Angeles ZIP code (90001) on October 12, 2026.
| Method (US address) | Transit (estimated average) | Weight and size limits | Priced by | US duties |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japan Post EMS (DDP) | 10–12 days | 30 kg; 1.5 m longest side, 2.75 m length + circumference[7] | Actual weight | Prepaid with shipping (DDP) |
| ECMS | 10–20 days | 30 kg; 55 cm longest side | Greater of actual or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000) | Prepaid before dispatch[6] |
| DHL Express | 3–7 days | 70 kg | Greater of actual or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000) | Billed to you after arrival |
| Parcel (box size) | ECMS | Japan Post EMS (DDP) | DHL Express |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 kg (15 × 10 × 10 cm) | $19.23 | $27.69 | $36.59 |
| 1 kg (20 × 15 × 15 cm) | $22.78 | $37.63 | $38.19 |
| 2 kg (25 × 20 × 20 cm) | $30.37 | $56.09 | $47.14 |
| 3 kg (30 × 25 × 20 cm) | $37.81 | $73.13 | $58.16 |
| 5 kg (35 × 30 × 20 cm) | $50.55 | $107.21 | $84.00 |
| 10 kg (50 × 40 × 25 cm) | $98.04 | $192.41 | $144.26 |
| 20 kg (50 × 40 × 40 cm) | $178.76 | $362.81 | $255.47 |
| 30 kg (50 × 40 × 40 cm) | $258.50 | $533.21 | $371.23 |
| 1 kg in a big box (40 × 35 × 30 cm) | $79.08 | $37.63 | $127.14 |
Shipping rates only, quoted on October 12, 2026. In the first eight rows each box’s volumetric weight is at or below its actual weight, so they are true weight prices. Four patterns stand out:
- Compact boxes: ECMS quoted lowest on every compact box in the table, from $19.23 for 0.5 kg to $258.50 for 30 kg.
- EMS (DDP) vs DHL: EMS (DDP) was $8.90 cheaper at 0.5 kg and $0.56 cheaper at 1 kg; from 2 kg up, DHL quoted less while showing the shorter transit range.
- Bulky but light: a 1 kg parcel in a 40 × 35 × 30 cm carton stayed at $37.63 by EMS (DDP), while ECMS and DHL billed its 8.4 kg volumetric weight at $79.08 and $127.14.
- Over 30 kg: at 30.5 kg the calculator stopped offering EMS (DDP) and pointed to customer service; DHL quoted $383.80.
The calculator doesn’t ask for a declared value, so these figures are shipping charges only; DDP duties and taxes come on top. For compensation and tracking details, see our ECMS vs DHL vs EMS comparison for US addresses and our delivery time and tracking guide.
How to choose Japan Post shipping to the US, step by step
You pick the carrier at the very end, when you create a parcel from items already in our Tokyo warehouse. Here is the order of operations in your OneMall account, from arrival to your door.

- Step 1 — Let your items arrive. In-stock items take an estimated average of 3–5 business days from the seller’s dispatch to reach the warehouse. They are stored free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation), so you can wait for the rest of a haul before you ship.
- Step 2 — Consolidate, and watch the total. Combine several orders into one parcel; the first 6 orders consolidate free, then ¥100 per additional order. Keep the total declared value at USD 2,500 or below if you want Japan Post.
- Step 3 — Create the parcel and read the options. Japan Post EMS (DDP) appears only when the package qualifies on weight, dimensions, item type, value and current carrier availability. If it doesn’t show up yet, the list tells you which methods you can use instead.
- Step 4 — Pay for shipping. With EMS (DDP), duties and taxes are calculated and prepaid as part of the shipping process. We hand the parcel to the carrier within an estimated 1–3 business days after you pay for international shipping.
- Step 5 — Track it to your door. Japan Post EMS tracking works with the tracking number shown in your account once the parcel ships.[8] In the US, inbound mail is sorted at USPS International Service Centers, so the answer to who delivers a Japan Post parcel is the US Postal Service.[3]
Japan Post US shipping restrictions to know
- Value: USD 2,500 total declared value per parcel.
- Weight: up to 30 kg — the limit in our calculator and on Japan Post’s EMS list for the United States.[7]
- Size: Japan Post lists a maximum length of 1.5 m and a length plus circumference of 2.75 m for EMS to the United States.[7]
- Item type: product-specific restrictions can rule out Japan Post even when the value fits, and some goods can’t leave Japan at all. Check what you cannot ship from Japan before you buy.
- Carrier availability: carrier rules regarding US customs keep changing, so the methods shown when you create your parcel are the ones that count.
Conclusion: when Japan Post is the right pick for a US parcel
Choose Japan Post EMS (DDP) when your parcel is declared at USD 2,500 or less, is bulky for its weight, and you want duties settled before it leaves Japan. Choose ECMS for the lowest quotes on compact boxes, and DHL when speed matters most or the parcel is over 30 kg. Price your own box in the OneMall shipping calculator before you check out, and see our guide to shipping from Japan to the USA for the full process for buyers in America.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Japan Post shipping to the US again?
Yes. Japan Post’s decision to resume US shipping took effect on April 14, 2026, with duties prepaid by the sender,[2] and Japan Post EMS (DDP) is now offered for US addresses in our checkout when the parcel’s total declared value is USD 2,500 or less.
How long does Japan Post take to US addresses?
Our calculator showed 10–12 days for Japan Post EMS (DDP) to a US address on October 12, 2026. That is an estimated average counted from dispatch, not a promised delivery date, so allow extra days for warehouse arrival and dispatch.
Do I pay duties when a Japan Post DDP parcel arrives?
Not separately. Under DDP, applicable duties and taxes are calculated and prepaid as part of the shipping process, subject to customs clearance requirements. The amount still depends on the contents and declared value of your package.
What if my parcel is worth more than USD 2,500?
Japan Post won’t be offered for it: our notice states that packages with a total declared value over USD 2,500 are not supported for shipping to the United States. Contact our Customer Support team before you create the parcel.
Why don’t I see Japan Post when I create my parcel?
Available methods depend on package weight and dimensions, item type and value, product-specific restrictions and current carrier availability. If one of these rules out Japan Post, ECMS or DHL may still be listed for the same parcel.
How does Japan Post US tracking work?
Every parcel we ship gets a tracking number in your account. Enter it on Japan Post’s international tracking page;[8] once the parcel reaches the US, it moves through the US mail system until USPS can deliver it.
