TL;DR
As of October 9, 2026, our calculator offers three ways to ship to a US address: ECMS (10–20 days), Japan Post EMS (DDP) (10–12 days) and DHL Express (3–7 days). ECMS quoted lowest on all seven dense boxes we priced, DHL is fastest, and EMS (DDP) suits big, light boxes. ECMS and EMS (DDP) prepay US duty; DHL bills you.
- Lowest quotes — ECMS: $22.78 for a 1 kg box and $50.55 for 5 kg on 2026-10-09, against $38.19 and $84.00 by DHL. Up to 30 kg, longest side 55 cm.
- Fastest — DHL Express, 3–7 days (estimated average), and the only method for parcels over 30 kg.
- Big but light boxes — Japan Post EMS (DDP) priced a 1.6 kg figure in a 51 × 51 × 41 cm carton at $51.76, the same as a small 1.6 kg box; DHL quoted $270.82.
- US duty — ECMS and EMS (DDP) parcels are duty-paid before they leave Japan[1][2]; DHL bills the duty to you after arrival.
- Chargeable weight = the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 5000) for ECMS and DHL.
As of October 2026, the shipping method you pick at checkout can move your total more than the store you buy from. On October 9, the same 1.6 kg boxed figure was quoted at $51.76 by one method and $270.82 by another — and because US-bound parcels of any value now pay duty, the method also decides when and how you pay it.
This guide compares ECMS, DHL Express and Japan Post EMS (DDP) for US buyers — transit times, live quotes, size caps, volumetric weight, duty collection and compensation — and covers regular EMS and Sea Mail for buyers elsewhere. OneMall buys for you across Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, Amazon Japan, Rakuten, Suruga-ya, ZOZOTOWN and more, then consolidates everything into one box, so the carrier is the last decision you make — and often the one that moves the total most.
How shipping from Japan works (before you pick a method)
Payment comes in two stages. Your first payment covers the item price plus our service fee — ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. Your second payment covers international shipping plus any Japanese domestic shipping the seller charged — and that is where you choose your carrier.
Between those two payments, your items are stored free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation), and you can consolidate several orders into one parcel. The first 6 orders consolidate free; each additional order is ¥100 (so consolidating 10 orders costs (10 − 6) × ¥100 = ¥400). Consolidation can cut costs: on 2026-10-09, two 1 kg ECMS parcels cost 2 × $22.78 = $45.56, while one 2 kg parcel cost $30.37. But ECMS and DHL bill by volumetric weight, and ECMS does not accept boxes with a longest side over 55 cm or length + girth over 2.13 m. Force bulky items into one big box and ECMS drops out of the quote, leaving the pricier methods. Rule of thumb: merge small with small; ship large items on their own.
One key rule: ECMS and DHL bill on chargeable weight, the greater of your parcel’s actual weight and its volumetric (dimensional) weight, measured on the outer box our warehouse uses. That is why a big, light box of plushies can cost as much to ship as a small, heavy box of games — more on that below.

The shipping methods available in 2026
For US addresses, the calculator lists three methods: ECMS, Japan Post EMS (DDP) and DHL Express. For the other 50 supported regions it lists regular Japan Post EMS, DHL and, for 42 of them, Sea Mail (calculator, 2026-10-09).
1. ECMS (air, US only) — the budget line for US buyers
ECMS is a courier service we offer only for US addresses. It trades a week or more of speed for the lowest quotes of the three US methods on dense boxes; the ECMS sections below cover what it is, how long it takes and how it handles problems.
- Transit time: 10–20 days (estimated average).
- Limits: up to 30 kg; longest side 55 cm; length + girth 2.13 m.
- Billed by: chargeable weight — a 2 kg parcel in a 40 × 30 × 30 cm box was priced the same as a 7.2 kg one ($71.22).
- Restrictions: no alcohol or food (food goes by DHL). For items with built-in batteries, the checkout shows which methods accept them.
- Best for: cost-sensitive, non-urgent boxes — manga sets, apparel, standard figures, trading cards.
2. DHL Express (air) — fastest, and the only option over 30 kg
DHL is a commercial express courier. In the October 2026 calculator it showed 3–7 days for all 50 destinations it served, and it was the only method offered for Chile.
- Transit time: 3–7 days (estimated average) after dispatch from our warehouse — the shortest range of the three US methods.
- Limits: up to 70 kg. DHL is required when a parcel exceeds 30 kg or 1.5 m on its longest side, and oversize or overweight surcharges apply above 30 kg.
- Billed by: chargeable weight, where volumetric weight = L × W × H (cm) ÷ 5000. Bulky-but-light parcels are penalized here: the 1.6 kg figure in a 51 × 51 × 41 cm carton was billed as 21.3 kg ($270.82).
- Duty: not prepaid. DHL bills the recipient for US duty plus its own clearance charges after arrival.
- Restricted items: some items, such as lithium batteries or alcohol, can only go by certain carriers; the checkout only shows methods that accept your parcel.
- Best for: urgent or high-value items, parcels over 30 kg, food (ECMS does not take it), and heavier dense boxes — from 2 kg up, DHL quoted less than EMS (DDP) on 2026-10-09.
3. Japan Post EMS (air) — duty-paid post for US addresses, regular EMS elsewhere
EMS (Express Mail Service) is Japan Post’s priority international service. For US addresses it appears in the calculator as Japan Post EMS (DDP): Japan Post has accepted US-bound items again since April 14, 2026, but requires duties on items valued over $100 and up to $2,500 to be prepaid through a CBP-approved qualified party.[2] Regular EMS served 49 of the 51 supported regions in the October 2026 calculator.
See also: Japan Post shipping to the US has resumed — the USD 2,500 declared-value limit, what DDP covers and how to select EMS (DDP) for a US parcel.
- Transit time: 10–12 days for EMS (DDP); 4–12 days for regular EMS, depending on destination (estimated averages).
- Weight limit: up to 30 kg per parcel for most destinations, lower for a few.[3] Above 30 kg, the calculator offers only DHL.
- Billed by: actual weight, within Japan Post’s size caps, which vary by destination.[3] In our quotes, a 2 kg parcel cost $56.09 whether it was packed in a 25 × 20 × 15 cm box or a 40 × 30 × 30 cm one.
- Compensation: EMS is covered by Japan Post’s compensation program for international mail.[4]
- Best for: big, light boxes to US addresses, where actual-weight billing beats volumetric pricing; elsewhere, the balanced default for figures, games and mid-value hauls.
4. Japan Post Sea Mail — lowest cost per kilogram, outside the US
Sea Mail moves your parcel by ship. It is the slowest method, and on 2026-10-09 it had the lowest 1 kg quote in all 42 regions where it was offered — for Germany, $17.75 against $31.24 by EMS and $41.94 by DHL. It is not offered for US addresses.
- Transit time: 30–90 days (estimated average).
- Coverage: 42 of the 51 supported regions.
- Weight limit: up to 30 kg; size limits vary by destination.
- Tracking: expect long silent stretches while the parcel is at sea — that is normal, not a lost package.
- Best for: heavy, sturdy, non-urgent boxes such as books, manga lots and homeware — not fragile, high-value or time-sensitive items.
Note: Japan Post Airmail appears in the calculator but was not offered for any destination on 2026-10-09.
ECMS vs DHL vs EMS: side-by-side for US addresses (October 2026)
| Method | Transit (estimated average) | Max weight | Billed by | US duty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ECMS | 10–20 days | 30 kg (longest side 55 cm) | Chargeable weight (÷5000) | Prepaid before dispatch | Dense, non-urgent boxes |
| Japan Post EMS (DDP) | 10–12 days | 30 kg | Actual weight | Prepaid before dispatch | Big, light boxes |
| DHL Express | 3–7 days | 70 kg | Chargeable weight (÷5000) | Billed to you after arrival | Speed, parcels over 30 kg, food |
Live quotes for one parcel to a US address from our shipping calculator on 2026-10-09. Each box’s volumetric weight is at or below its actual weight, so these are true weight prices:
| Parcel (box) | ECMS | Japan Post EMS (DDP) | DHL Express |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 kg (20 × 15 × 5 cm) | $19.23 | $27.69 | $36.59 |
| 1 kg (20 × 15 × 10 cm) | $22.78 | $37.63 | $38.19 |
| 2 kg (25 × 20 × 15 cm) | $30.37 | $56.09 | $47.14 |
| 3 kg (30 × 25 × 20 cm) | $37.81 | $73.13 | $58.16 |
| 5 kg (40 × 30 × 20 cm) | $50.55 | $107.21 | $84.00 |
| 10 kg (50 × 40 × 25 cm) | $98.04 | $192.41 | $144.26 |
| 20 kg (50 × 40 × 40 cm) | $178.76 | $362.81 | $255.47 |
The ECMS and DHL figures match our US shipping rate card, which also shows the yen amounts; the exact fee for your parcel appears when you pay for shipping. ECMS vs DHL: ECMS cost $15.41–$76.71 less across these boxes, while DHL’s estimate is 3–7 days against 10–20. EMS vs DHL: below 1 kg EMS (DDP) quoted less, at 1 kg the two were $0.56 apart, and from 2 kg DHL quoted less while arriving sooner.
What is ECMS shipping?
ECMS shipping is a door-to-door international courier service. Its operator in Japan, ECMS Japan, is the Japanese subsidiary of the ECMS Group, an international logistics company.[5] ECMS Japan collects parcels in Japan, handles export and import customs clearance, and delivers to the recipient in the destination country; it says its rates to Korea, other Asian countries and the US are lower than EMS, which matches the quotes above.[6] You will also see it called ECMS Express.
For buyers, the practical meaning of ECMS in our checkout is an economy option for US addresses only — the calculator did not offer it for any of the other 50 regions on 2026-10-09. On this lane it is duty-paid: ECMS accepts US-bound parcels only with freight and customs duties prepaid,[1] so the duty is settled when you pay for shipping rather than billed on delivery. Limits are 30 kg, a 55 cm longest side and 2.13 m length + girth, and it does not take alcohol or food.
How long does ECMS take from Japan to the US?
Plan on 10–20 days after the parcel leaves our Tokyo warehouse. That is the ECMS shipping time our calculator showed for US addresses on 2026-10-09, and it is an estimated average, not a delivery date. The full timeline has three separate steps:
- Seller to warehouse: in-stock items take an estimated 3–5 business days from the seller’s dispatch to reach our Tokyo warehouse.
- Warehouse dispatch: we hand the parcel to the carrier within an estimated 1–3 business days after you pay for international shipping.
- ECMS transit: 10–20 days to the US address.
For reference, ECMS Japan publishes 6 to 11 business days to the United States for its own Standard Express service, and says the estimate does not cover force majeure or customs inspections.[6] The 10–20 day range is the one to plan with for orders shipped through us. ECMS lists missing customs information, holidays and flight delays as common causes of late delivery.[7] Is ECMS shipping fast? Not next to the alternatives: if your deadline is tight, DHL’s 3–7 days or EMS (DDP)’s 10–12 days are faster.
Is ECMS shipping reliable?
Is ECMS shipping good for your parcel? These are the checkable facts, not promises:
- Tracking: all parcels we ship get a tracking number, visible in your account once the parcel ships; ECMS also offers tracking by number on its own site.[7]
- Who delivers: ECMS runs the service door to door — export and import customs clearance, then delivery to the recipient — and routes US shipments through multiple gateways.[6] It cannot deliver to post office boxes, so give a street address.[7]
- Handover: we hand the parcel to ECMS within an estimated 1–3 business days after you pay for international shipping.
- Duty: prepaid before dispatch,[1] so there is no duty bill to settle on delivery.
- If something goes wrong: lost parcels are claimed with the carrier — if tracking shows no update for more than 48 hours after customs clearance, contact us and we confirm with the carrier within 72 hours and help file the claim. Damage in international transit is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid, if reported within 24 hours with the order number, photos and a complete unboxing video.
What ECMS does not offer is speed: at 10–20 days it has the longest estimate of the three US methods. For deadlines or high-value items, DHL’s 3–7 days may be worth the higher price.
Volumetric (dimensional) weight, explained
ECMS and DHL charge on chargeable weight — whichever is greater, your parcel’s real weight or its volumetric weight:
Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5000
Example from our 2026-10-09 quotes: a 40 × 30 × 30 cm box of plush toys weighing 2 kg has a volumetric weight of 40 × 30 × 30 ÷ 5000 = 7.2 kg. ECMS priced it at $71.22 and DHL at $115.08 — exactly their prices for a 7.2 kg parcel — while Japan Post EMS (DDP) charged $56.09, its price for 2 kg. That is why dense items came out cheapest by ECMS in all seven quotes above, while bulky-light boxes are worth checking against EMS (DDP).
Volumetric weight is measured on the outer box our warehouse actually uses, not the bare product, so packaging counts. A 1.6 kg boxed figure in a 51 × 51 × 41 cm carton has a volumetric weight of about 21.3 kg: DHL quoted $270.82, ECMS refused it (over its 55 cm limit), and EMS (DDP) quoted $51.76. What you can control is how much goes into each box — splitting an order so each parcel fits a smaller box is the main lever.
Customs & import duties for US buyers (ECMS, EMS, DHL)
Since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies. How the duty is collected depends on the method — and that decides whether a duty bill follows the parcel:
- ECMS — duty prepaid. ECMS accepts US-bound parcels only with freight and customs duties paid in advance,[1] so the duty is collected with your international shipping payment. Does ECMS shipping include tariffs? The calculator asks only for weight, size and destination, so its quotes cover shipping; the duty depends on the value of the goods and is collected when you pay for shipping.
- Japan Post EMS (DDP) — duty prepaid. Japan Post requires duties on US-bound items valued over $100 and up to $2,500 to be prepaid through a CBP-approved qualified party;[2] DDP stands for “delivered duty paid”.
- DHL — no prepayment. DHL bills the recipient for the duty plus its own clearance charges after arrival. Budget for this separately so it doesn’t catch you off guard.
Customs holds are outside our control, and we are not responsible for delays caused by the US customs process. For duty rates by product category and how to estimate them before you buy, see our guide to import tax and customs fees from Japan to the USA.
Insurance & compensation
If you’re shipping anything valuable — a graded card, a boxed camera, a limited figure — know how claims work before you choose a method:
- Lost parcels: we are not liable for parcels lost in domestic or international transit; claims are handled by the carrier. If tracking shows a parcel received but not delivered, or no update for more than 48 hours after customs clearance, contact us — we confirm with the carrier within 72 hours and help file the claim.
- Damage in our warehouse (storage, repacking): refunded at the item’s purchase price.
- Damage in international transit: compensation is capped at the international shipping fee paid; report it within 24 hours with the order number, photos and a complete unboxing video.
- Japan Post EMS: covered by Japan Post’s compensation program for international mail;[4] for Japan Post parcels, we help you file the claim with the carrier.
Before the parcel ships, our value-added services let you check and protect it: unboxing photos (¥500 / ¥700), a wrong or missing item check for Mercari, Rakuma and Yahoo Flea Market orders (¥200), and package reinforcement from ¥100.
How to choose the right method (step by step)
- Step 1 — Check your destination. US addresses: ECMS, Japan Post EMS (DDP) and DHL. Elsewhere: regular EMS, DHL and, for most regions, Sea Mail. The calculator lists what is valid for your address.
- Step 2 — Weigh urgency. Need it within about a week? DHL (3–7 days). Fine to wait? ECMS (10–20 days) or, outside the US, Sea Mail (30–90 days).
- Step 3 — Judge value and fragility. High-value or fragile → DHL’s shorter transit, plus unboxing photos or reinforcement before dispatch. Cheap and sturdy → the budget method is fine.
- Step 4 — Consider shape. Dense and heavy favors ECMS (or DHL above 30 kg). Bulky and light gets penalized by volumetric weight — compare against EMS (DDP), which charged actual weight in our quotes.
- Step 5 — Consolidate the small stuff. Merging small, dense orders into one box (first 6 orders consolidate free, ¥100 per additional order) lowers the per-item rate — but ship large or bulky items on their own. An over-stuffed box can exceed ECMS’s 55 cm limit and push the parcel onto pricier methods.
- Step 6 — Confirm at checkout. The methods available for your specific parcel appear at the second-payment stage. Availability varies by destination, size and contents, so the live checkout list is the final word.
Which method for which product?
| Product | Recommended for a US address | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Anime figures, Nendoroids | ECMS; EMS (DDP) for large, light boxes; DHL if urgent | Often bulky — box size decides |
| Trading cards (graded/sealed) | ECMS, or DHL if urgent | Small and dense; high value-to-weight |
| Games, consoles, cameras | Whichever methods the checkout allows | Built-in lithium batteries limit carriers |
| Books, manga lots | ECMS (Sea Mail outside the US) | Heavy, sturdy, rarely urgent |
| Apparel, plush, bulky-light goods | Compare ECMS vs EMS (DDP) | Volumetric weight decides |
| Food | DHL | ECMS does not take food |
| Over 30 kg or longer than 1.5 m | DHL | The only method above those limits |
The checkout list reflects what is valid for your parcel, but destination customs rules still apply, so you remain responsible for confirming an item is allowed.
Coverage & what we can’t ship
Our calculator covers 51 countries and regions, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau (as of 2026-10-09); no African country is on the list. Some destinations are served by only some methods — Chile by DHL only, Brunei by Japan Post only. Prohibited items — aerosols and other gases, flammable liquids, fresh or frozen food and other dangerous goods — can’t ship at all, and items such as those with lithium batteries can go only by certain methods. Always confirm both your country and your item at the second-payment checkout, where only the methods valid for your exact parcel are shown.
Conclusion
There’s no single “best” shipping method from Japan — only the best method for a given box. For US addresses in October 2026, ECMS gave the lowest quotes on dense boxes at 10–20 days, DHL is the pick when speed matters or the parcel is over 30 kg, and Japan Post EMS (DDP) is worth checking for big, light boxes. Outside the US, EMS is the balanced default and Sea Mail the budget option for heavy boxes that can wait. Consolidate small items (but ship bulky ones separately), keep each parcel’s outer box as small as you can, and add unboxing photos or reinforcement for anything valuable. Ready to build a haul? Frequently Asked Questions
What is ECMS shipping?
ECMS is a door-to-door international courier service run in Japan by ECMS Japan, part of the ECMS Group. It collects parcels in Japan, handles customs clearance at both ends and delivers to the recipient. In our checkout it is the economy option for US addresses only, with duties prepaid before dispatch and limits of 30 kg and a 55 cm longest side.
How long does ECMS take from Japan to the US?
10–20 days after the parcel leaves our Tokyo warehouse — the estimated average in our calculator on 2026-10-09. Before that, allow an estimated 1–3 business days for warehouse dispatch after you pay for shipping, plus the seller’s delivery time to the warehouse.
Is ECMS shipping reliable?
All parcels we ship have a tracking number, ECMS handles customs clearance and delivery door to door, and US duty is prepaid, so there is no duty bill on delivery. ECMS cannot deliver to PO boxes. If a parcel is lost, the claim goes through the carrier and we confirm with them within 72 hours; transit damage is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid.
ECMS vs DHL: which is cheaper from Japan to the US?
ECMS, in all seven boxes we priced on 2026-10-09: $22.78 vs $38.19 for 1 kg and $50.55 vs $84.00 for 5 kg. DHL is faster (3–7 days vs 10–20) and is the only option over 30 kg. For big, light boxes, also check Japan Post EMS (DDP), which charged actual weight.
What is the fastest shipping method from Japan?
DHL Express, at 3–7 days (estimated average) after dispatch from our warehouse. For US addresses, Japan Post EMS (DDP) follows at 10–12 days and ECMS at 10–20 days.
How is shipping weight calculated?
ECMS and DHL bill chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight (Length × Width × Height in cm ÷ 5000), measured on the outer box our warehouse uses. Japan Post EMS charged actual weight in our quotes, within its size caps. Keeping each parcel’s box small is the main lever.
Is my parcel insured?
Lost parcels are claimed with the carrier; we confirm with the carrier within 72 hours and help file the claim. Damage in international transit is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid if reported within 24 hours with photos and a complete unboxing video. Japan Post EMS is also covered by Japan Post’s compensation program.
Which countries can you ship to?
51 countries and regions in our calculator as of 2026-10-09, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau; no African country is on the list. Some are served by only some methods (Chile by DHL only), and the exact methods for your address appear at the second-payment checkout.
