TL;DR
Tomica is three different hobbies wearing one badge: ¥550 toy cars, ~¥990 Tomica Premium display models, and Tomytec’s 1/64 Tomica Limited Vintage line that trades for several thousand yen a car. Only the first tier is easy to find abroad. Everything interesting — shop originals, event models, retired Premium numbers — is a Japanese-domestic purchase, and diecast is the cheapest category there is to ship.
- Standard Tomica is ¥550 including tax at Japanese retail (as of 2025)[1]; Tomica Premium is 990 yen (税込) for most releases, with a few at 1,078 yen[2].
- Retired numbers trade above list. Tomica Premium 01 Skyline Turbo Super Silhouette lists at 1,078 yen new; we found an unused one secondhand at ¥1,760 on 29 August 2026.
- Tomica Limited Vintage (TLV / TLV NEO) is a separate Tomytec line[3] aimed at adult collectors — live listings on 29 August 2026 ran ¥1,500 to ¥7,590 depending on model and condition.
- Diecast is the cheapest thing you can import. Three TLV boxes quoted US$20.99 economy air to the United States and US$13.49 EMS to Singapore on 29 August 2026.

As of August 2026. Tomica passed 1 billion cumulative units sold as of December 2024 across more than 10,000 model varieties — roughly one car every 1.8 seconds since 1970[1]. That scale is exactly why the line splits: the ¥550 blister packs are everywhere, and the parts collectors actually chase never leave Japan.
The Three Tomica Tiers, and Which One You Are Actually Shopping For
Most overseas buyers searching “Tomica” find the toy line, price it against Hot Wheels, and conclude Japanese diecast is overpriced. That comparison is wrong, because two of the three tiers are not toys at all.

The practical difference is scale discipline. Standard Tomica and Premium are box scale — a bus and a kei car both get shrunk to fit the same package, so a shelf of them does not line up. TLV and TLV NEO are fixed 1/64, which is why they are the line people build dioramas around.
TLV NEO is also where the JDM cars live: 180SX, Savanna RX-7, Corolla Levin, Cefiro, NISMO 400R, Celsior. These are period-correct trim levels with year designations printed on the box, not generic “sports car” castings.
What Is Genuinely Japan-Only
Being honest about this matters, because plenty of Tomica reaches overseas shelves. Here is what does not:
- Takara Tomy Mall and Tomica Shop originals — store-exclusive colourways sold through Japanese channels only.
- Event and campaign models — the TOMICA OWNERS MEETING fan festival, motor-show models, regional tie-ins. These are produced once, in Japan, and immediately become secondhand-market items.
- Retired numbered releases — Premium and TLV numbers get discontinued and then live only on Mercari, Yahoo! auctions, Suruga-ya and 2nd STREET.
- 限定 / カラー変更 variants — limited colour re-runs of an existing casting, usually not exported.

Live Japanese Listings Right Now
These three were pulled and stock-checked on 29 August 2026. They are single-unit secondhand and new listings, so treat them as a price reference rather than a permanent link — diecast listings turn over fast.
Note the middle of that lineup. The Premium 01 Skyline Turbo Super Silhouette lists new at 1,078 yen[2], and an unused secondhand one was ¥1,760 — a 63% premium over list, on a car that is simply no longer in production. That gap is the whole reason people import Tomica instead of waiting for a reissue.
Why Diecast Is the Cheapest Category to Import
A Tomica is roughly 60–90 grams. Even three boxed TLV NEO cars with packaging come in around 400 g in a 20×15×10 cm box. That lands in the opening weight band of almost every carrier, which is why the numbers look like this:

- Sea Mail flatlines. To the UK, Germany, Australia and Canada, three cars and ten cars cost the same by sea, because both sit inside the same opening band. If you are not in a hurry, ten cars ship for the price of three.
- The US lane is different. Only economy air and express courier quoted for US addresses in our test — no sea option and no Japan Post option came back. Japan Post did resume US-bound acceptance on 14 April 2026 after the 2025 suspension[4], but that is a postal-network fact, not a guarantee that every lane is offered on every route.
The one way diecast gets expensive: volumetric weight
Carriers bill on whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm, divided by 5,000)[5]. A single TLV box is tiny, so this never bites. A sealed multi-car gift set or a Tomica World playset is mostly air, and it bites hard. If you are buying a big boxed set, expect it to price like a figure, not like a car.
How to Buy Tomica From Japan: The Actual Steps
- Step 1 — Identify the exact casting. Write down the line and number ("LV-N385a", "Tomica Premium 01"). Colour variants of the same casting carry different suffix letters and very different prices.
- Step 2 — Search the Japanese term, not the English one. トミカリミテッドヴィンテージ returns far more than “Tomica Limited Vintage”. Customs in 2026: Small Value Does Not Mean Free
The United States revoked its US$800 de minimis duty-free exemption on 29 August 2025 under Executive Order 14324[6][7] — one year ago to the day. US-bound parcels are dutiable regardless of declared value, so a US$40 box of toy cars is now a customs entry like any other. The UK charges VAT on goods above its low-value threshold and duty above a higher one[8].
The practical consequence for diecast buyers is counterintuitive: because duty is now assessed anyway, the old habit of splitting a collection into several small parcels to duck a threshold buys you nothing in the US and costs you a minimum shipping charge every time. Consolidate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tomica Limited Vintage the same thing as Tomica?
No. Tomica is Takara Tomy’s toy line; Tomica Limited Vintage and TLV NEO are made by Tomytec[3] as fixed 1/64 display models for adult collectors. They share the brand and nothing else — different scale discipline, different price bracket, different shelves in Japanese shops.
Why can’t I just buy from Takara Tomy Mall directly?
Japanese manufacturer and hobby stores overwhelmingly deliver to Japanese addresses only. That is a store policy, not an export restriction — a proxy service gives you the Japanese address, receives the parcel and forwards it.
How much does it actually cost to ship a few cars?
Three boxed TLV NEO cars quoted US$20.99 to the United States and US$13.49 to Singapore on 29 August 2026. Because carriers price per parcel with a minimum charge, ten cars often cost the same as three — run your own basket through the calculator before you decide how many to buy.
Are opened-box TLV cars worth buying?
Often yes. Japanese sellers grade condition precisely, and 開封のみ (opened only) means the box was opened but the car was never displayed or handled. The listing above at ¥2,750 was that grade. If the box itself matters to you, buy 未開封 (unopened) and expect to pay for it.
Should I use sea mail for diecast?
It is the single best category for it. Metal cars in cardboard boxes are not temperature-sensitive or fragile in a way 30–90 days at sea affects, and to Europe and Australia sea mail was under US$18 for the same box that costs meaningfully more by air. The only real risk is box edge wear, which matters if you collect sealed.
