TL;DR

As of August 2026, several standout game consoles — the region-free PlayStation Vita, the Pikachu Nintendo 64, the Sharp Twin Famicom and the Bandai WonderSwan — were sold almost exclusively in Japan, so overseas collectors usually need a proxy service to import them.

  • The PlayStation Vita has no region lock, so imported games from any country play normally.[3]
  • The Sharp Twin Famicom combined a Famicom and its Disk System in one Japan-only Sharp–Nintendo unit.[2]
  • Bandai released the WonderSwan on 16 December 1999, designed with Game Boy co-creator Gunpei Yokoi.[1]
  • The Nintendo 64 is region-restricted, so Japanese N64 units generally only run Japanese cartridges.[4]
  • OneMall can buy and consolidate these consoles from Japanese shops and auctions, with commission as low as ¥200 per order.

The country is the home of many outstanding game developers and designers, as well as renowned gaming companies like Sony and Nintendo. Numerous classic games and consoles originated there, such as globally famous franchises like Pokémon, Super Mario, and Animal Crossing. These creations transcend borders, spreading joy and happiness.

Despite this, for various reasons, many excellent game consoles are exclusively available there. OneMall has selected 7 of these exclusive consoles for gamers to explore together!

Exclusively Available PS Vita

While the PS Vita may have been discontinued for overseas fans, it remains popular there with consistently good sales and new game releases. The market offers a variety of limited edition designs and exclusive versions of consoles that are not commonly imported to other countries.

One of the reasons for its enduring popularity is the lack of region lock on the PS Vita, allowing gamers to freely enjoy games from any country when importing. OneMall recommends several incredibly cool exclusive consoles for gaming enthusiasts to explore further.

For avid Minecraft enthusiasts, don’t miss out on this special edition collaboration console. In addition to the console itself, it includes a gaming console bag, Minecraft game for PS Vita, and a carrying case. This cost-effective overseas shopping package is a must-have for fans.

It is worth noting that the N64 console can only play games made there unless you purchase a special hard drive and even remove some plastic near the system’s tape slot.

5. Sharp Twin Famicom Ontology AN-500B

Most retro gaming enthusiasts are familiar with the Famicom, the original version of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). However, not many are aware that Nintendo once collaborated with Sharp to develop a niche retro gaming console only found there – the Sharp Twin Famicom.

This console features a unique design compared to others, and the Famicom also has many exclusive games that were never brought to the NES. The Twin Famicom’s capabilities are impressive – with a 16-bit main CPU suitable for handheld games and a resolution of 224*144 that makes many games look stunning. Additionally, it comes with colorful interchangeable casings and buttons with excellent tactile feedback.

During the Famicom/NES era there, Nintendo released a disk system attachment for the original Famicom, allowing games to be stored in a yellow floppy disk-like dark box. Interestingly, these disks were rewritable, meaning that after finishing a game, players could visit a Nintendo game booth, purchase a new game, and then write the new game onto the disk, reducing costs for both Nintendo and consumers.

The Twin system comes in various color variants, including two red-black variants and one blue-green-black variant.

6. Wonder Swan & Wonder Swan Color

The WonderSwan is one of the portable consoles developed by Bandai and Koto there. It was released by Bandai in 1999 to compete with devices like the Neo Geo Pocket Color and Nintendo’s Game Boy Color. Gunpei Yokoi, who was involved in the development of the first-generation Game Boy, also participated in the development of the WonderSwan.

On December 16, 1999, the WonderSwan took flight a year after the release of the Game Boy Color, entering into competition with Nintendo and SNK’s Neo Geo Pocket Color. The reasonable layout of the buttons allowed for various gameplay styles, such as traditional horizontal controls for action games and vertical controls for aerial shooting games. This innovative design revolutionized handheld gaming! Unfortunately, the WonderSwan could not rival Nintendo’s Game Boy system and failed to find success in its home market. Nevertheless, the WonderSwan remains a decent console.

Purchasing a WonderSwan is relatively easy; with a quick search, you can still find WonderSwan and WonderSwan Color consoles on various auction websites. Additionally, if you live there, you may even come across these consoles in local bookstores or other second-hand game shops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these consoles really only available in Japan?

Most of these limited editions and models, such as the Pikachu N64 and Sharp Twin Famicom, were sold only in the Japanese market and never officially exported, so importing through a proxy is usually the only route.

Can I play imported games on them?

The PlayStation Vita is region-free, so games from any region work.[3] The Nintendo 64 and Famicom hardware are region-restricted and generally only run Japanese cartridges without modification.[4]

How much does OneMall charge to buy a console for me?

OneMall’s proxy commission is as low as ¥200 per order — the first 6 orders are free, then ¥100 per order — plus up to 90 days of free storage while you consolidate multiple items into one shipment.

Will I pay import duty when it arrives?

That depends on your country. In the United States, the long-standing $800 de minimis duty-free threshold was revoked on 29 August 2025, so used consoles may now attract duty regardless of value; check your local customs rules before ordering.

Are these vintage consoles safe to buy second-hand?

Yes, many are sold on Japanese auction and second-hand sites. OneMall’s optional inspection and photo service lets you confirm condition before international shipping.
