Japanese pajamas and loungewear have a following in the US for one brand above all: gelato pique, the fluffy “wearable dessert” roomwear from Tokyo. This guide covers gelato pique in depth (what it is, where it is from, its smoothie, powder and baby moco fabrics, sizing vs US sizes, prices, collabs with Pokémon, Sanrio, PEANUTS and Mrs. GREEN APPLE, the HAPPY BOX lucky bag, stores in Tokyo and New York, washing instructions), then other Japanese sleepwear and loungewear brands you can check on maker pages: Wacoal, UCHINO gauze pajamas, TENTIAL BAKUNE recovery wear, nishikawa and SAZAC kigurumi. It also explains what Japanese pajamas, nightgowns and robes are called (nemaki, yukata, jinbei, samue, tanzen), Japanese house slippers and indoor slipper etiquette, Japanese pajama sizes, and how to buy Japanese pajamas from the US. Prices are maker-listed prices in Japan as of November 2026, tax included.
What Are Japanese Pajamas Called?
In Japanese, pajamas are パジャマ (pajama), the same word as in English. The traditional word for nightwear is 寝巻 / 寝間着 (nemaki), “clothes worn for sleeping”, with pajamas, negligee (nightgown) and nightwear as synonyms.[33] So what do Japanese wear to bed? Today most people sleep in Western-style pajamas or loungewear; the yukata you see in hotels is the classic Japanese robe for after the bath.[26] Useful words:
- 部屋着 (heyagi): comfortable clothes worn indoors, the Japanese word for loungewear (loungewear in Japanese is also ルームウェア, “roomwear”).[36]
- パジャマ (pajama) and ナイトウェア (nightwear): pajamas in Japanese; a nightgown in Japanese is ネグリジェ (negligee) or ワンピースパジャマ (one-piece pajama).[33]
- 寝巻 (nemaki): the Japanese word for nightgown or sleepwear in the older sense, also used for kimono-style sleep robes.[33]
- Sleepwear vs loungewear: the difference between sleepwear and loungewear (and between sleepwear and pajamas) is use, not fabric. Pajamas are for bed; loungewear (roomwear) is what you wear at home before bed, and Japanese brands such as gelato pique sell pieces meant for both.[36][37] Pajamas vs pyjamas is only spelling: pajamas in the US, pyjamas in the UK.
- Examples of loungewear: a matching pullover and pants set (a loungewear set), hoodies, cardigans, robes, lounge pants, shorts and one-piece lounge dresses; loungewear examples in Japan also include the jinbei and samue (below).
Ancient and old Japanese sleepwear: Heibonsha’s encyclopedia on Kotobank notes that in old times, East or West, people hardly used special clothes just for sleeping.[38] We found no source we trust for exactly when Western pajamas spread in Japan (claims about the Taisho era or the Edo period vary), so we leave dates out. What do Japanese pajamas look like today? Mostly the same as US ones: button-up pajamas (pajamas with buttons), pullover and pants sets, pajama bottoms, nightgowns, and a few Japan-specific styles such as the jinbei and gauze pajamas. Japanese pajamas for women, female and girls’ styles run to cute, kawaii prints and plaid; Japanese pajamas for men (male), boys, kids and toddler pajamas are simpler; matching family pajamas and a Japanese pajama party (パジャマパーティー, a sleepover) are popular too.

gelato pique: What It Is and Why People Love It
What is gelato pique? gelato pique (ジェラート ピケ, pronounced “jeh-LAH-toh pee-KAY”) is a Japanese roomwear brand. Its US store describes it as “Japanese-designed Gelato Pique roomwear” that is “wearable dessert” for young and mature adults, with women’s and men’s styles, matching sets and accessories in its signature gelato fabric, at a relatively affordable price point.[37] So is gelato pique a Japanese brand? Yes: it is a brand from Japan, and its homewear (roomwear) is sold on the gelato pique website in Japan (gelatopique.com, the Japan or JP website) as well as in stores. The Japanese store sells pajamas and roomwear for women, men, kids and babies, maternity wear, bedding (gelato pique Sleep), pet clothing (CAT & DOG) and cafe goods.[1]
Gelato pique meaning: the brand says the name comes from “gelato pique”, meaning ice cream fabric (piqué is a knit fabric).[13] Where is gelato pique from, which country is it from, what is its origin? Japan, where it has stores across the country; many pieces are made in China, as the “原産国 (country of origin)” line on each product page shows.[14][15][39]
What does gelato pique sell? The women’s store has matching sets (上下セット), hoodies, cardigans and robes (ガウン), pullovers, sweaters, shirts, camisoles, short and long pants, leggings, dresses (one-piece) and lingerie, plus goods: room shoes, socks, hair clips and headbands, leg and waist warmers, pouches, makeup bags, tote bags, blankets, towels, mirrors, plush toys (teddy bears) and fragrance items. The US store also sells eye masks, dresses and rompers, and seasonal pieces such as a Halloween “Night Parade Dogs” jacquard pullover.[40] The men’s line, GELATO PIQUE HOMME, has its own store with tops, pants, room shoes, socks and underwear, such as online-limited dinosaur print boxer shorts at ¥6,490.[1][35]
gelato pique Fabrics: Gelato, Smoothie, Powder, Baby Moco and More
The gelato pique fabric names describe the feel. Here is how the brand describes each one:
| Fabric | How the brand describes it | Season | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GELATO (ジェラート) | The signature long-pile mokomoko knit, soft like baked sponge cake | Fall and winter | [2][13] |
| AIRY MOCO (エアリーモコ) | Mokomoko texture in a thin, airy, very light knit | Fall to spring | [2][13] |
| BABY MOCO (ベビモコ) | Shorter fibers, springy and soft, warm yet light | Fall and winter | [2][13] |
| POWDER (パウダー) | Fluffy look with a smooth, powdery feel; finely knit short pile | Fall to spring | [2][13] |
| SOUFFLE (スフレ) | Springy, high-density, warm knit, named after soufflé | Winter | [2][13] |
| SMOOTHIE (スムーズィー) | Short-pile velvety knit that “melts” on the skin; thin | Year-round | [2][13] |
| Hot Smoothie (ホットスムーズィー) | Smoothie with an added heat-retaining function | Winter | [1] |
All the knits we checked are synthetic: the Gelato pullover is 96% polyester and 4% nylon, the Powder set is 100% polyester, and the Homme Baby Moco pullover is 95% polyester and 5% nylon.[14][15][17] Is it bad to sleep in polyester pajamas? That depends on you: polyester knits are warm and soft, but less breathable than cotton gauze. If you sleep hot, look at the Smoothie line or at cotton gauze pajamas from UCHINO (below). For winter, Japanese flannel pajamas (フランネル) and fleece are the warm options; Japanese print pajamas and pattern pyjamas (themed, Japanese-inspired designs) are easy to find by searching プリント パジャマ.
Is gelato pique good quality, and is it worth it? We do not rate quality; what we can tell you is the fabric content, country of origin and care label listed on each page. Gelato pique reviews online (including on Reddit) mostly discuss softness and pilling, which depends on washing. Gelato pique dupes sold elsewhere copy the look, not the brand’s own knits. The brand’s company, MASH Style Lab, takes imitation seriously: in January 2026 it settled a design-imitation lawsuit against the operators of the GRL web store at Japan’s IP High Court, with 17 items withdrawn from sale and destroyed.[41]
gelato pique Sizing: One Size, Homme M/L and Kids
Gelato pique sizing is simple: most women’s items are F (one size), men’s are M and L, and kids are sold by height in cm. Every product page lists measurements in cm, and the brand’s size guide covers the rest:
| Range | Sizes | What the size means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Women | F (one size, free size) | Example: Gelato pullover bust 110 cm, length 65 cm; Powder pants waist 68 cm, hip 104 cm | [14][15] |
| Men (Homme) | M / L | M = height 165–175 cm; L = 175–185 cm (Baby Moco pullover bust 112 / 116 cm) | [16][17] |
| Unisex | S-M / M-L | S-M = height 158–170 cm; M-L = 168–180 cm | [16] |
| Junior | 130 / 140 cm | About 9–10 and 11–12 years | [16] |
| Kids | 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 cm | About 2–3, 3–4, 4–5 and 5–6 years | [16] |
| Baby / newborn | 50 / 70 / 80 cm | Newborn to 2 months (50), 6 months–1 year (70), 1–2 years (80) | [16] |
| Socks and room shoes | F, S-M, M-L | Unisex socks S-M 22–25 cm, M-L 25–28 cm; velour room shoes F fit 23.5–25 cm | [16][18] |
Is gelato pique one size? For women, mostly yes, with a relaxed, roomy cut: the Gelato pullover has a 110 cm (43 in) bust, so it fits loosely on a US S–M and comfortably on most L. The Powder pants waist is listed at 68 cm (about 27 in).[14][15] The Homme lucky bag notes that its free size is equivalent to the usual men’s M.[42] For gelato pique sizing vs US sizing and other Japanese clothing, see our Japanese clothing size conversion chart.

Gelato pique coupon codes, discount codes and promo codes on the Japanese store are tied to its membership program; we found no general coupon to list.[1]
gelato pique Collabs: Pokémon, Sanrio, PEANUTS, Dragon Quest and More
Gelato pique collabs sell out fast and many come with purchase limits. Recent collaborations on the brand’s Japanese pages:
| Collaboration | Release | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon meets GELATO PIQUE (3rd) | Sep 9, 2026 | Pikachu, new Clefairy and Marill; designs evolve Pichu → Pikachu → Raichu as sizes grow; some stores used numbered tickets or a visit lottery | [20] |
| Mrs. GREEN APPLE with GELATO PIQUE | Oct 20, 2026 | One per item, color and size per person; store-visit lottery open only from inside Japan | [21] |
| GELATO PIQUE ♡ Sanrio characters (2nd) | Oct 14, 2026 | Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, Kuromi, Little Twin Stars; sold by sanrio house, not on gelato pique’s own site | [22] |
| PEANUTS meets GELATO PIQUE (10th anniversary) | Fall 2026 | Snoopy in the signature border knit; ladies, men, kids, baby, dog | [19] |
| SESAME STREET × CPD HOOME meets GELATO PIQUE | Aug 21, 2026 | Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar | [23] |
| GELATO PIQUE encounters DRAGON QUEST | Oct 8, 2025 | First Dragon Quest collab, 56 items with sleeping monsters; one per color and size per person | [24] |
| Starbucks collab items | 2025 | Sold only at Starbucks, not in gelato pique stores | [25] |
So gelato pique x Pokémon, gelato pique x Sanrio, gelato pique x PEANUTS (gelato pique x Snoopy), Dragon Quest x gelato pique and Starbucks x gelato pique are all real collabs. For gelato pique x LE SSERAFIM, the members (Kim Chaewon, Sakura, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha and Hong Eunchae) each have pieces, the floral illustrations were conceived by the members themselves, and there are dog-motif mascot key rings.[43] The US store also lists collections with LE SSERAFIM, Star Wars, kansai yamamoto, Doraemon, Steiff, Dick Bruna (Miffy) and Super Mario (Toad and Yoshi).[40] Gelato pique Pokémon pajamas include Pikachu hoodie-and-shorts sets and pieces with Clefairy, Marill and Raichu. Gelato pique Sanrio covers Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody and Kuromi.[20][22] Other collabs that come up in searches (Animal Crossing, Jin, Yamada Ryosuke, Pikmin and other Nintendo characters, Hangyodon, Boo, Eevee, Snorlax, Ditto, Jigglypuff, gelato pique x Doraemon pieces, gelato pique x LUMINE store events) were not on the brand pages we read today, so check resale listings for what was actually sold.
Important for overseas buyers: many collab launches use a store-visit lottery, numbered tickets, or a limit of one per item, color and size per person.[24][20][21] OneMall cannot buy items that need a lottery entry or have a purchase limit, so new collab drops usually cannot be bought through us. Once collab pieces are resold on Mercari or Yahoo Auctions, they can be bought like any other listing.
gelato pique HAPPY BOX (Lucky Bag / Fukubukuro)
A fukubukuro (福袋, “lucky bag”) is a sealed bag of assorted goods sold at New Year.[44] The gelato pique lucky bag is called HAPPY BOX. For 2027 there are LADIES’ SIZE boxes A (¥13,200, five popular items) and B and a MEN’S SIZE Homme box, sold by lottery from November 2 to November 5, 2026 on the MASH STORE app and USAGI ONLINE. Entry needs a MA CARD membership and login, one entry per person, and resale-purpose entries are refused.[42] Because it is a lottery with membership, OneMall cannot buy the gelato pique HAPPY BOX 2027 (or the 2026 one) directly; resold boxes on Mercari are the realistic route.
gelato pique Stores in Tokyo, Japan and New York
Gelato pique locations in Japan include Omotesando Hills (B2F), many LUMINE malls (Shinjuku, Yurakucho, Ikebukuro, Yokohama, Omiya), atre Ueno, Ginza Mitsukoshi, Osaka (LUCUA, Umeda EST), Kyoto (Daimaru Kyoto, Kyoto Porta), Nagoya, Fukuoka (PARCO, LaLaport) and Okinawa (Okinawa Outlet Mall Ashibinaa), plus outlet stores at Gotemba Premium Outlets, Sano, Kobe-Sanda and Mitsui Outlet Park Makuhari. Some locations also have gelato pique cafe shops, and the online store sells cafe goods such as tumblers and tote bags.[39][1] For the holidays, the third Christmas Gift Market 2026 pop-up runs November 14–29, 2026 at Omotesando Hills, Space O (B3F), with free entry.[45] The gelato pique flagship-style events in Tokyo tend to be at Omotesando Hills; the shop list on the Japanese store shows every gelato pique Tokyo location.[39]
Gelato pique USA: the brand runs an English-language US store and a store in New York at 125 Orchard St., New York, NY 10002 (gelato pique NYC).[46] The US store offers free shipping over $170 within the US only.[40] Outside Japan, the Japanese store links to its China (T-mall), English (US) and Korean sites.[1]
gelato pique Washing Instructions
How do you wash gelato pique? The brand’s US care page says to handle the clothes with care and highly recommends dry cleaning; the second best option is hand washing:[47]
- Dissolve neutral detergent in warm water (86°F).
- Turn the garment inside out, fold it and immerse it.
- Press down and knead about 20 times on each side.
- Spin dry for 1 minute.
- Reshape and lay it flat to dry in the shade. Do not hang it.
Gelato pique also sells fragrance and care goods in Japan; check the 洗濯表記 (care label) on each product page.[1] Gelato pique return policy: the Japanese store accepts returns only for defective or wrong items, and not for washed items.[48]
gelato pique Kids, Baby, Maternity, Men and Pets
- Gelato pique kids and baby: baby clothes from 50 cm (newborn), rompers, ponchos, blankets, bibs; kids 90–120 cm and junior 130–140 cm. Many baby pieces are bought as gifts (出産祝い).[1][16]
- Gelato pique maternity: maternity wear and mother-and-child handbook cases.[1]
- Gelato pique men (Homme): M and L sizes; the Baby Moco hero bear pullover and the gelato pique homme pajama sets are popular as matching pairs.[17][35]
- Gelato pique cat and dog: knit and cut-sewn pet clothing in S/M/L by back length, a padded dog vest (¥7,040), dog beds and blankets.[16][1]
- Gelato pique Sleep (bedding): duvet covers, box sheets, pillow cases (44 × 64 cm), blankets and a gelato pique futon-style multi cover.[16][49]
- Recovery wear: in August 2026 gelato pique launched its first recovery wear, in Smoothie, satin and cut-sewn fabric, which the brand says uses an original special fiber to promote blood circulation and fatigue recovery.[50] Those are the brand’s claims.
Wacoal Suimin Kagaku: Pajamas Built Around Sleep
Wacoal, the lingerie maker, sells sleepwear under Wacoal Suimin Kagaku (睡眠科学, “sleep science”). The concept is to make sleep time “dream time”, with pajamas designed around three kinds of comfort: of movement, of temperature and on the skin.[3] The line has about 70 pajama and roomwear items, mostly ¥15,000–¥20,000, in sizes S, M, L and LL, from button-down cotton pajamas to warm winter pajamas.[3] At the top end, the 100% silk pajamas (YDX542) are listed at ¥38,500, with a soft sheen and a breathable, less stuffy feel.[4] If you want Japanese silk sleepwear, Japanese luxury pajamas or expensive Japanese pajamas, this is the line to look at. Search ワコール 睡眠科学 パジャマ (Wacoal sleep science pajamas) on OneMall. For Japanese silk in general, see our Japanese silk and kimono fabric guide.
UCHINO: Japanese Double Gauze Pajamas
Japanese cotton gauze pajamas (ガーゼパジャマ) are the warm-weather alternative to fleece. UCHINO (内野) started as a textile business in 1937, exported silk gowns and robe coats from 1947, and became a towel specialist; it now also sells pajamas, relaxing wear, bathrobes, bedding and slippers.[7][5]
- Marshmallow Gauze (マシュマロガーゼ): UCHINO’s gauze pajamas balance warmth, breathability and moisture absorption, and the maker says they keep temperature and humidity inside the pajamas from rising when you sweat. Basic and piping styles in men’s, women’s and kids sizes, so families can match.[5]
- Marshmallow Waffle Gauze Light: a waffle layer woven between gauze for extra warmth in cold months.[5][6]
- Crepe Gauze: very breathable and absorbent, for hot, humid summers: UCHINO’s Japanese summer sleepwear.[6]
- Marshmallow Air Knit: a double-layer cotton gauze knit for light, soft loungewear.[6]
These cover the Japanese double gauze pajamas, Japanese cotton loungewear, Japanese cotton nightgown and Japanese muslin pajamas searches: Japanese “double gauze” is two layers of cotton gauze. Search 内野 ガーゼ パジャマ (UCHINO gauze pajamas) or 二重ガーゼ パジャマ (double gauze pajamas). UCHINO’s towels belong with our Imabari towels and Japanese bedding guide.
Japanese Recovery Pajamas: TENTIAL BAKUNE
“Recovery wear” (リカバリーウェア) is a big category in Japan. TENTIAL’s BAKUNE is registered as a general medical device (一般医療機器) in Japan, as a home-use far-infrared garment for blood circulation. It uses SELFLAME, a fiber with micro-fine ceramic powder that, according to TENTIAL, absorbs far-infrared radiation from the body and radiates it back to the skin; the expected effects listed are fatigue recovery, fatigue reduction and easing muscle stiffness, and the function is designed not to wash out.[8] Those are the maker’s statements, not ours. “Japanese pajamas relieve muscle tension” searches usually mean this kind of recovery wear. Gelato pique’s recovery wear (above) is a separate product.[50] Search BAKUNE リカバリーウェア.
nishikawa and Japanese Bedding
nishikawa (西川) traces its history to 1566, when its founder started selling mosquito nets and daily goods, and later moved into futon.[9] It is a bedding company first: pillows, futon and mattresses rather than pajamas. What are Japanese sleeping mats called? The futon (布団) laid on tatami; sleeping on tatami is part of why Japanese homes are shoes-off.[27] For Japanese towels and bedding, see our Imabari towels and Japanese bedding guide.
Japanese Animal Pajamas: Kigurumi and Onesies
What are Japanese animal pajamas called? Kigurumi (着ぐるみ): one-piece animal or character pajamas (onesies). SAZAC, an Osaka company, is a kigurumi maker whose lineup covers animal kigurumi, character pajamas and jinbei.[12] Japanese footie pajamas, Japanese onesie pjs and Japanese anime pyjamas (character pajamas) belong in this category, as do kigurumi of Pokémon and Sanrio characters. Search 着ぐるみ パジャマ (kigurumi pajamas).
Japanese Pajama Sizes vs US Sizes
Japanese pajamas run smaller than US pajamas at the same letter. Use cm measurements, not labels:
| Japanese size | Rough US equivalent | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Women’s one size (F) | Fits roughly US S–L in relaxed loungewear | Check bust (バスト) and hip (ヒップ) in cm on each page |
| Men’s M / L (Homme) | Height 165–175 cm / 175–185 cm (5’5″–5’9″ / 5’9″–6’1″) | Japanese men’s M is closer to a US S–M |
| Unisex S-M / M-L | Height 158–170 cm / 168–180 cm | Pick by height, then check chest width |
| Wacoal S / M / L / LL | LL is roughly a US L–XL | Japanese LL = XL; 3L–6L are plus sizes |
| Kids 90–140 cm | Size = child’s height in cm | 100 cm ≈ US 3T–4T; 120 cm ≈ US 6–7 |
Sources for the table: gelato pique size guide and product pages[16][14][17]; Wacoal size range[3]. These are rough guides; check the 着丈 (length), バスト (bust), ウエスト (waist), ヒップ (hip) and 股下 (inseam) on each listing. Japanese pajamas in plus size are sold as 3L, 4L and up. Full charts (JIS sizes, S/M/L/LL, kids) are in our Japanese clothing size conversion chart; tabi and sock sizes are in our Japanese sock brands and tabi socks guide.
Traditional Japanese Sleepwear and Robes: Yukata, Jinbei, Samue, Tanzen
What is a Japanese robe called, and what do you call a Japanese robe for a lady or a man? It depends on the robe. Here are the traditional Japanese sleepwear and loungewear names, from Kotobank:
| Name | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Yukata (浴衣) | Unlined cotton kimono; summer everyday wear and after-bath wear; the robe in ryokan rooms | [26][27] |
| Jinbei (甚兵衛 / 甚平) | Today mainly men’s summer indoor wear: wide sleeves, knee-length top tied in front, side slits, with shorts | [28] |
| Samue (作務衣) | Zen monks’ work clothes: tube-sleeved top tied with cords and trousers gathered at the hem; now popular loungewear | [29] |
| Tanzen (丹前) | Thickly padded, wide-sleeved kimono worn as warm loungewear; winter | [30] |
| Dotera (褞袍) | Large padded wide-sleeved kimono for warmth and as bedding, mainly for men; another word for tanzen | [31] |
| Hanten (半纏) | Short jacket like a haori without gussets; work or cold-weather wear, worn over loungewear | [32] |
| Nemaki (寝巻 / 寝間着) | The general word for nightwear; synonyms pajama, negligee, nightwear | [33] |
- Do you sleep in a yukata? Yukata are worn after bathing and as summer wear, and the yukata in a ryokan room is what guests wear around the inn; JNTO notes that some inns let you wear it outside and some do not.[26][27] The Japanese hotel pajamas name is often simply 館内着 (in-house wear) or 浴衣; whether you can keep hotel pajamas is the hotel’s rule, so ask.
- How to wear and tie a Japanese robe: wear it left over right: your left panel on top of your right. Right over left (左前, hidari-mae, as seen by others) is the opposite of the usual way and is used for the dead.[51] Tie the sash (obi or a simple belt) at the waist.
- Japanese robe crossword clue (6 letters): KIMONO, or YUKATA.
- Japanese robe names by use: night robe or lounge robe for men and women = yukata (cotton) or a gown (ガウン); onsen robe = the yukata provided in your room at hot-spring inns (part of the stay, not a rental); outer robe and half robe = haori or the short hanten; padded or quilted robe = tanzen or dotera; a morning or evening robe at home = a gown (ガウン). The kimono, closed with an obi, is the Japanese robe worn on formal occasions.[26][30][32] The Japanese robe “thing” name people look for is usually yukata (for a female or male guest, a girl or a guy, the name is the same).
- Styles and colors: traditional yukata and robes tie with a sash, not buttons; a robe with buttons is a Western gown or a robe dress. Japanese robes in black, white, red, pink and blue, print robes and loose cotton robes are all common; pongee (紬) silk robes are a kimono-fabric topic covered in our silk guide.
- Japanese loungewear samue and Japanese pajamas jinbei: samue and jinbei work as Japanese style loungewear for men and women today.[28][29] For workwear-style samue, see our Japanese workwear brands guide.
- Japanese winter loungewear: tanzen, dotera and hanten are padded jackets worn over pajamas; the hanten is the short one.[30][31][32]
- Japanese onsen pajamas and hotel pajamas: at hot springs (onsen pyjamas) and ryokan you get a yukata; some city hotels provide a two-piece night shirt and pants set instead; ask the hotel what you may keep. A Japanese heritage night shirt in the old sense is the nemaki.[33][27]
For yukata, jinbei and summer festival wear, including sizes and how to buy them, see our yukata and jinbei guide. For kimono, haori and kimono silk, see our Japanese silk and kimono fabric guide.
Japanese House Slippers: Names, Etiquette and Brands
What are Japanese house slippers called? スリッパ (surippa) for slippers, and 上履き (uwabaki) for any indoor footwear used on corridors and wooden floors, including uwazori (indoor sandals), uwagutsu and slippers.[52] 上靴 (uwagutsu) meant slippers in the Meiji era; today it usually means the indoor shoes that students wear at school.[53] Room shoes (ルームシューズ) are slipper-like indoor shoes.[1]
Why do Japanese wear slippers in the house?
JNTO explains that the culture of taking off shoes comes from a history of sitting and sleeping on tatami. You take off your shoes at the entrance (the genkan), step up over the agari-gamachi, the board at the edge of the raised floor,[54] and put on the indoor slippers provided. Place your shoes neatly in the shoe box or to the side.[27]
- Tatami: take slippers off before stepping onto tatami mats; socks or bare feet only.[27]
- Toilet slippers: most places have a separate pair of slippers in the restroom; change into them and change back when you leave.[27]
- Restaurants, temples, ryokan: some attractions, restaurants and traditional hotels ask you to remove your shoes and may give you slippers. Look for signs and watch what others do.[55]
- Japanese remove shoes before entering the house: the genkan is the house shoes area; outdoor shoes stay on the lower floor, and slippers start where the raised floor begins.[54][27]
- Japanese house slippers for guests: households keep spare slippers for guests near the entrance; many hotels also provide slippers in the room.
- Why do Japanese wear slippers in school? Schools have their own indoor shoes (uwagutsu) so outdoor dirt stays outside.[53]

Japanese house slippers come in cotton, linen, wool, rubber-soled, open-toe summer types, reversible and washable versions, slippers with arch support, kids sizes and bulk guest packs. Searches also name cheap slippers from Daiso and brands such as Kolo, Merippa and Morihata; we could not check their pages, so compare listings yourself. Leather slippers, straw (igusa) summer slippers, black or cute character slippers and reversible house shoes with fleece lining are all sold in Japan; for men, mens sizes are usually L or LL. Japanese sizes are in cm: women’s slippers usually fit about 23–25 cm (US women’s 6–8), men’s about 25–27 cm (US men’s 7–9).[18][16] Search スリッパ 日本製 (made-in-Japan slippers), ささ和紙 スリッパ (SASAWASHI slippers) or ルームシューズ (room shoes). For socks to wear with them, see our Japanese sock brands and tabi socks guide.
Where to Buy Japanese Pajamas in Japan
In Tokyo, gelato pique’s shops are in department stores and LUMINE malls (Shinjuku, Yurakucho, Ikebukuro, Ueno, Omotesando Hills), and Wacoal’s brand page has a store finder for shops that carry Suimin Kagaku.[39][3] Japanese pajamas in Kyoto and Osaka: gelato pique has stores at Daimaru Kyoto and Kyoto Porta, and in Osaka at LUCUA and Umeda EST.[39] Online, Japanese stores sell through their own shops, Rakuten, ZOZOTOWN (see our ZOZOTOWN buying guide) and secondhand sites; vintage Japanese pajamas, old nightgowns and vintage kimono robes turn up on Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and at shops like 2nd STREET (see our 2nd STREET secondhand guide).
How to Buy Japanese Pajamas from the US
Gelato pique’s Japanese store does not ship overseas and does not accept cards issued outside Japan. It also says it is not responsible for damage or loss once a forwarding service takes over.[48] That is the gap a proxy service fills:
- Search in Japanese: ジェラートピケ, ジェラートピケ セット, ジェラートピケ オム, ジェラートピケ ポケモン, ワコール パジャマ, ガーゼ パジャマ, 甚平, 作務衣, スリッパ. Try ジェラートピケ (gelato pique), ジェラートピケ パジャマ (gelato pique pajamas) or ジェラートピケ ポケモン (gelato pique Pokémon).
- Check size in cm against a pajama set you own (bust, length, inseam).
- Skip lottery and limited drops: HAPPY BOX lotteries, store-visit lotteries and one-per-person launches cannot be bought through OneMall; look for resold items instead.
- No sprays: gelato pique also sells hair mist and fragrance items. Sprays and flammable liquids are on OneMall’s prohibited list and cannot be shipped.[56] Pajamas, robes, slippers and blankets are not on the list.
- Bundle and check: fleece and knit sets are bulky, so volumetric weight can count more than actual weight. Consolidating several pieces into one parcel spreads the shipping cost. Add unboxing photos (¥500 / ¥700) or a wrong/missing item check (¥200) at the Tokyo warehouse before international shipping.
OneMall buys from Japanese marketplaces such as Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Rakuten and Amazon Japan, and from other Japanese online stores (including maker web shops) through LinkBuy. Items that need a lottery entry, purchase limit, Japanese identity verification or a merchant account cannot be purchased. International shipping is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5,000) of the box the warehouse uses.
Service fees are ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. The first six orders consolidate free; each additional order costs ¥100. Storage is free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation). Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD.
US buyers: since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies. OneMall currently ships to the United States by ECMS, DHL and Japan Post EMS (DDP — declared value up to USD 2,500, duties prepaid with the shipping fee); the live quote at checkout shows which lines accept your parcel.
If something breaks: damage caused inside the warehouse by OneMall is refunded at the item’s purchase price; damage in international transit is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid, and must be reported within 24 hours with the order number, photos and a full unboxing video. Loss in transit is handled by the carrier, and OneMall helps confirm with the carrier and file the claim within 72 hours. Duties and customs fees are paid by the buyer.
