What the Hobonichi Techo is, and why the 2027 launch matters
The Hobonichi Techo (ほぼ日手帳) is the planner made by Hobonichi, the company behind copywriter Shigesato Itoi’s website (the 1101 in the URL spells his name in Japanese). It launched with the 2002 edition, has sold more than ten million copies in over 100 countries[4], and is built around one page per day on Tomoe River paper with a 3.7 mm grid, a daily quote at the foot of each page and thread-sewn binding that opens flat. Every year the whole lineup is replaced on 1 September — new covers, new collaborations, new bonus pages — and the popular covers sell out within hours, which is what makes September the month people search for it.
As of September 2026 the Hobonichi Store ships direct to most countries and shows prices in local currency, so a proxy is not the default way to buy a Hobonichi. It is the way to get the things the global store does not sell: Loft- and TOBICHI-exclusive collaborations, day-one sell-outs that resurface on Mercari, last year’s books at clearance prices on Rakuten, and a techo packed together with the pens, washi tape and stickers Japanese users pair with it (the stationery-brands guide has the makers).

Hobonichi 2027 covers: the series and what they cost
Original (A6) and Cousin (A5) books need a cover; Weeks and HON come with one. The standard cover is the butterfly-stopper type with a pen holder. The official store shows each A6 cover with a set-price range (¥5,170 with a Day-Free book up to ¥6,160 with a Planner for the Colors covers); a set is simply the book price plus the cover price, so a Rakuten listing that sells them apart costs the same.

What Hobonichi 2027 costs in Japan today: live listings
Every row is a listing on sale on 21 September 2026, read from the shop page the morning this article went live. Rakuten rows are the Hobonichi Rakuten shop and Japanese stationery retailers; Amazon Japan rows are marketplace sellers (a few tens of yen over official); Mercari rows are private sellers, which is where the sold-out and retailer-exclusive items are.
What sold out, and what it resells for
- Retailer exclusives never reach the global store. The Kanahei Weeks, the Suica’s Penguin items at the Tokyo Station shop and the Loft-only covers are sold in Japan only; the 2027 Kanahei Weeks is on Mercari at ¥5,400–¥5,899 today.
- Character covers go first. Hello Kitty, Moomin, Detective Conan and ONE PIECE magazine are the 2027 series that Mercari sellers list within days; the Hello Kitty Weeks is ¥4,500 sealed against ¥3,520 official, a 28% premium.
- Designer covers carry the biggest markup. tanakadaisuke’s A5 cover is ¥42,000 on Mercari against ¥36,300 new; minä perhonen and POTR covers behave the same way once the official stock is gone.
- Books themselves are not scarce. Rakuten shows more than 1,500 Original and Cousin books in stock today, and a private seller is asking ¥2,600 for a sealed Original — under official. Do not pay a premium for a plain book.
- Restocks happen. The official store says cancelled orders return to stock without notice and offers restock-notification emails for techos and Drawer Pouches (not covers or stationery).
How to buy Hobonichi Techo 2027 from Japan
- Step 1 — Check the official store first. If the Hobonichi Store lists your book and cover in stock for your country, order there: worldwide shipping, local-currency prices, duties prepaid at checkout for many countries, and the store-exclusive acorn charm and pen. Register a Hobonichi ID before a launch or restock; the site uses a virtual waiting room.
- Step 2 — Search the Japanese shops for what it does not have. Rakuten (the Hobonichi Rakuten shop plus stationery retailers), Amazon Japan and Mercari (search ほぼ日手帳 2027 plus the series name; add 未使用 or 新品未開封 for unused). Loft’s own web store does not ship abroad, but Loft-exclusive items appear on Mercari.
- Step 3 — Order through the proxy. OneMall buys the listing and pays the seller; service fees start at ¥200 per order (Rakuten 3%, minimum ¥200; Mercari ¥200 up to ¥7,000). Second-hand platform items ship to the warehouse within a day of purchase.
- Step 4 — Consolidate. A techo, a cover, a pencil board, pens and stickers from three or four shops go into one box; the first six orders consolidate free, 90 days of free storage covers the wait for a restock.
- Step 5 — Ship. A book plus cover is about 500 g; ask for a small box, because carriers bill the greater of real and volumetric weight. Quotes below.

Which Hobonichi is best for beginners?
The official guide says start with the Original (A6): a page a day, lay-flat binding, and the widest choice of covers. If you want less to carry, the Avec split or the Weeks; if you want more room to paste, the Cousin.
Are the English and Japanese editions the same price?
Yes: Original, Cousin, Weeks, Weeks Mega and HON cost the same in either language. Only the bonus pages differ. The Planner (¥3,410) is a separate English-only layout.
Can I buy just the cover, or last year’s cover?
Yes. Covers are sold on their own at the official store (¥2,750 for Colors) and on Rakuten; discontinued and previous-year covers are on Mercari. The Original and Cousin cover sizes have not changed, so any year’s cover fits the 2027 book.
