Japanese seed beads come from two Hiroshima Prefecture makers: MIYUKI, maker of Delica, round rocailles and TILA beads, and TOHO, maker of round, Aiko, Treasure and Demi beads. This guide covers both brands, the aught size system (11/0, 8/0, 15/0) with a seed bead size chart in mm, beads per gram and hole sizes, Miyuki Delica vs Toho Treasure vs Toho Aiko, finish and color codes, which beads suit bead weaving, loom and peyote work, where to buy Japanese seed beads in Japan, and how to buy them from the US. Prices are listed prices in Japan as of November 2026.
What Are Japanese Seed Beads?
Seed beads (seed beads definition: small, uniform glass beads sold by size and shape) are made in Japan by melting glass, drawing it into thin tubes, cutting the tubes and reheating the pieces so the edges round off. MIYUKI melts silica sand, soda ash, lime and colorants at about 1,400°C; TOHO melts silica powder and soda ash at over 1,300°C for about 20 hours.[42][43] So what are Miyuki and Toho seed beads made of? Glass: TOHO says every bead it produces is glass.[44] Beads in Japanese culture are much older, as the “Other Japanese beads” section shows.
| Maker | Based in | Founded | Known for | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MIYUKI | Fukuyama, Hiroshima | 1935 | Delica (cylinder), round rocailles, TILA / Half / Quarter TILA, bugles, drops, magatama, berry, hex, Duracoat | [1][2] |
| TOHO | Hiroshima City | 1951 | Round, Aiko and Treasure (cylinder), Demi Round, magatama, 3-cut, Charlotte, cube, PermaFinish (PF) | [3][4] |
MIYUKI exports to more than 50 countries; TOHO lists America, Europe and Asia as its main markets.[45][46]
MIYUKI: Delica, Round Rocailles and TILA
What are Miyuki beads? MIYUKI is the Japanese glass bead maker founded in 1935 in Fukuyama, Hiroshima. It calls itself Japan’s oldest bead manufacturer still in operation.[1] Miyuki beads history: silver-lined beads and US exports from 1949; Delica, which MIYUKI calls the world’s first cylinder bead, in 1982; BEADS FACTORY, Japan’s first bead specialty store, in 1987; Duracoat in 2008; TILA in 2010; the MIYUKI FACTORY shop in Tokyo in 2022.[2][47] In 2016 MIYUKI took over the “Hiroshima Beads” brand and published a color cross-reference.[48]
Where are Miyuki beads made (Miyuki beads origin)? All MIYUKI beads are made at its own factory in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan.[49] The catalog lists about 4,720 glass beads, and the MIYUKI Beads Directory on MIYUKI’s website returns 4,153 results you can filter by shape, size, finish and durability, with downloads and a “My collection” list (handy as a Delica inventory list).[50][51]
Miyuki Delica beads
What are Miyuki Delica beads? Delica is MIYUKI’s own cylinder seed bead. Because shape and size are so even, the beads line up into a smooth “surface” that suits fine patterns and geometric designs, and the fairly large hole takes several thread passes, so Delicas are used in stitching and weaving.[8] Delica meaning: the name comes from “delicate”. MIYUKI says customers asked for a bead suited to bead weaving: uniform, gap-free, smaller, with a larger hole.[21] In Japanese: デリカビーズ.
| Delica | Size | Outside | Hole | Beads per kg | Beads per 10 cm | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DBS | 15/0 | 1.3 mm | 0.65 mm | 350,000 | 88 | [8] |
| DB | 11/0 | 1.6 mm | 0.8 mm | 200,000 | 77 | [8] |
| DBM | 10/0 | 2.2 mm | 1.0 mm | 108,000 | 59 | [8] |
| DBL | 8/0 | 3.0 mm | 1.5 mm | 30,000 | 37 | [8] |
| DBC (Delica Cut) | 11/0 | 1.6 mm | 0.8 mm | 230,000 | 77 | [9] |
So Delica bead sizes are 15/0 (DBS), 11/0 (DB), 10/0 (DBM) and 8/0 (DBL). The plain cylinder is “Delica” and the cut version is “Delica Cut” (DBC); MIYUKI’s bead with a six-sided cross-section is a separate shape, the Hexagon (HX).[8][9][11] Delica bead dimensions and measurements: about 200 per gram and 77 per 10 cm for DB 11/0, hole 0.8 mm (DBL 8/0: 1.5 mm).[8] For a Delica bead counter or Japanese bead calculator, multiply your pattern length by the per-10 cm figure.
Delica color numbers: DB numbers are shared across sizes, so DB10 and DBL10 are the same color in different sizes; a Delica bead chart on MIYUKI’s site cross-references DB colors with round seed bead colors.[26] The same number can vary slightly between lots, so MIYUKI sells real sample books.[49][52] Searches like DB200, DB 201, DB 14, DB0034 or DB 1831 are color numbers; check them in the Directory or the free PDF color chart download before buying.[51][49]
Miyuki round seed beads (round rocailles)
Round Rocailles (RR) are the most common seed bead, in many sizes and colors, for stitching, embroidery and weaving. Sizes run from 15/0 to 1/0 (5/0 and 1/0 are E and EE beads), with round or square holes.[5]
Miyuki TILA, Half TILA and Quarter TILA
What are Miyuki Tila beads? A flat, square two-hole bead that MIYUKI developed; the name comes from the Japanese word 平ら (taira, “flat”), because it looks like a mosaic tile. The two parallel holes make it popular for beaded bracelets and weaving.[10] MIYUKI says it took more than ten years and two generations to develop.[21]
- TILA (TL): 5 × 5 × 1.9 mm, hole about 0.8 mm, about 11,800 beads per kg.
- Half TILA (HTL): 5 × 2.3 × 1.9 mm, about 25,000 per kg.
- Quarter TILA (QTL): 5 × 1.2 × 1.9 mm, about 48,000 per kg.[10]
The Tila stretch bracelet is the best-known use: two holes let you string a flat band on two cords. MIYUKI FACTORY sells TILA in transparent, opaque, alabaster, silk, rainbow, luster, matte, Picasso, gold luster, metallic, glass enamel, “precious” and special-coating finishes; gold, silver, green or rose Tila searches are color names inside those finishes, so check the Tila bead color chart by number.[53][27] The “Miyuki half tola” spelling is just Half TILA.

TOHO: Round, Aiko, Treasure and Demi Beads
What are Toho beads? TOHO (トーホー, Toho in Japanese) is a Hiroshima City glass bead company. Founder Ichiji Yamanaka started making glass canes in Hiroshima in 1951; the company was incorporated in 1957, and its Hiroshima Plant has made beads from cane to finish in one place since 1964.[3][46][54] Toho beads are made in Japan at that plant.[35]
Toho’s two selling points, in its own words: larger holes (more thread passes and lighter beads, so more beads per gram) and consistent size, shape and quality.[4][44] Hiroshima City has certified TOHO’s beads as “The Hiroshima Brand” craft products.[44][35] Are Toho beads good quality, and is there a Toho beads review we trust? We do not rate quality; we report what the maker publishes so you can compare.
| Toho bead type | Sizes | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round (丸小 / 丸大 / 特大 / 特小) | 15/0, 11/0, 8/0, 6/0 | 11/0 and 8/0 are the most used sizes | [4][6] |
| Aiko | ø1.65 × 1.3 mm | Toho’s top-grade cylinder bead, “totally consistent in shape and size” | [4][16] |
| Treasure | ø1.65 × 1.3 mm (11/0) | Cylinder beads for bead weaving and stitching, priced for everyday use | [4][17] |
| Demi Round | 11/0, 8/0, 6/0 | A thinner round bead with the same hole and diameter as the round | [4][18] |
| Magatama | 3, 4, 5, 7 mm | Water-drop shape with an offset hole | [4][6] |
| Square hole (内角), triangle, hexagon, cube | 11/0, 8/0; cube 3 and 4 mm | Cut holes and faces for sparkle; cubes take leather cord | [4][6] |
| 3-cut, Charlotte | 特小 1.5 mm and 小 2.0–2.2 mm | Random facets or a single cut for a soft shimmer | [4][6] |
| Bugle (竹ビーズ), twist, spiral | 2 to 15 mm; twist 9 to 25 mm | Named by length: 一分竹 3 mm, 二分竹 6 mm, 三分竹 9 mm | [6] |
| PermaFinish (PF), Bridal, Semi-glazed, Takumi LH | Various | Finish lines and specialty series on Toho’s sample cards | [19][20] |
Toho seed bead sizes in Japanese: 特小 (15/0, 1.5 mm), 丸小 (11/0, 2.0–2.2 mm), 丸中 (2.6 mm), 丸大 (8/0, 3 mm) and 特大 (6/0, about 4 mm; a 5.5 mm size also exists). Toho bugle beads are named by length: 一分竹 3 mm, 二分竹 6mm, 三分竹 9mm, up to 五分竹 at 15 mm.[6] Toho’s English shape list has no separate drop bead; its water-drop shape is the magatama. Hexagons shine “in soft motion”, triangles “in dynamic motion”.[4][7] Toho also sells “antique beads” (アンティークビーズ), 1.65 mm beads with the look of metal beads for weaving and embroidery.[6]
Toho Demi Round is a thinner round with the same hole and diameter as the regular round.[4] Toho’s store lists Demi 11/0 (about 840 beads per 5 g), 8/0 (about 340) and 6/0 (about 140).[18] Toho Takumi (Takumi LH), Bridal and Semi-glazed beads appear on Toho’s sample cards, and Q Beads are sized for embroidery machines.[19][55] We found no Toho page describing a “Hybrid” line today, so we leave it out. Toho also runs the yearly TOHO Challenge (2025 theme “Sonoran Sunset”, shown at Venice Glass Week) and the International Beads Biennale Hiroshima, held October 23–24, 2026.[56]
Seed Bead Size Chart: Aught Sizes in mm
Seed bead sizes explained: how does seed bead sizing work? Sizes are written with a slash and zero, read as “aught”: 11/0 is “eleven aught”. The bigger the number, the smaller the bead: 15/0 is about 1.5 mm and 6/0 about 4.5 mm.[9] The standard seed bead size: 11/0 and 8/0 are the most used, says Toho.[4] A printable seed bead size chart in mm from both makers’ data:
| Aught size | Japanese name | MIYUKI round (outside) | TOHO round (outside) | MIYUKI hole | Beads per kg (MIYUKI / TOHO) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Reading the chart:
- 11/0 seed bead size in mm: about 2.0 mm (MIYUKI) or 2.0–2.2 mm (TOHO); a Miyuki 11/0 in mm is 2.0, and a Miyuki Delica 11/0 is 1.6 mm.[5][6][8]
- 8/0 seed bead size in mm: about 3.0 mm; the 8/0 Delica (DBL) is also 3.0 mm.[5][8]
- 15/0: about 1.5 mm for rounds and 1.3 mm for Delica DBS, the smallest seed bead size either maker lists.[5][8]
- 6/0 and larger: 6/0 is 4.5 mm (MIYUKI) or 4 mm (TOHO); 5/0 E beads 5 mm; 1/0 EE beads 6.5 mm.[5][6]
- 3mm and 2mm beads: a 3mm seed bead is an 8/0; a 2mm seed bead is an 11/0. For “seed bead sizes 3mm”, pick 8/0 rounds, 8/0 Delica, 3 mm cubes or 3 mm magatama.
Seed bead sizes comparison: how to tell sizes apart: measure with calipers, or use a seed bead size sifter or sorter; Japanese packs list the size name (丸小, 丸大). Sizes differ between makers and shapes: a Delica 11/0 (1.6 mm) is smaller than a round 11/0 (2.0 mm), and Czech makers such as Preciosa follow their own charts, which this guide does not cover. That is why seed bead size equivalents are given in mm here.
Beads per gram
How many Miyuki seed beads in a gram? About 110 round 11/0, about 200 Delica 11/0, about 39 round 8/0 and about 250 round 15/0, from MIYUKI’s beads-per-kg figures.[9] TOHO’s Beads Per Kg Chart gives about 105 round 11/0, about 42 round 8/0, about 186 Aiko or Treasure and about 186 Demi Round 11/0 per gram.[7] A 3 g tube of many DB colors (¥160) is about 600 beads; Toho’s 3 g of Aiko or Treasure is about 560, and a 7 g bag of 11/0 rounds about 670.[22][16][17][34]
Hole sizes, thread and needles
Seed bead hole size (inner diameter or opening size) from MIYUKI’s chart: 15/0 round 0.7 mm, 11/0 round 0.8 mm, 8/0 round 1.1 mm, 6/0 round 1.5 mm, Delica 11/0 0.8 mm, Delica 8/0 1.5 mm, TILA 0.8 mm, magatama 4 mm 1.3 mm, E beads 2.0 mm.[9] Toho does not publish a hole diameter on the pages we read, but says its holes are made larger than usual.[4] Seed bead thread size, cord, wire and needle size depend on how many passes your stitch makes; test a few beads first. For 2mm or 4mm seed bead hole size searches: a 2 mm hole means a 5/0 E bead (2.0 mm) or larger; EE beads have a 2.4 mm hole and the 7 mm macrame bead a 3.0 mm hole, and no seed bead in MIYUKI’s chart has a 4 mm hole.[9]
Seed bead sizes for projects
- Best seed bead size for earrings: 11/0 rounds or Delicas for brick-stitch earrings and fringe earrings; 15/0 for fine edges; drops for fringe tips.[13]
- Seed bead size for loom work: Delica 11/0 or Aiko/Treasure for flat, even rows.[8][4]
- Seed bead size for embroidery and cross stitch: 11/0 and 15/0 rounds; bugles for lines. MIYUKI’s round bead page lists embroidery as a main use.[5]
- Seed bead bracelet sizes and waist beads: 8/0 or 6/0 rounds, Tila, or magatama on stretch cord or elastic; big sizes (6/0, 5/0) suit cord, and Toho’s cubes take leather cord.[10][14][6]
Miyuki Delica vs Toho Treasure vs Toho Aiko
All three are cylinder beads for weaving and stitching:
| Miyuki Delica DB | Toho Aiko | Toho Treasure | Source | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | MIYUKI | TOHO | TOHO | |
| Size and shape | 11/0 cylinder, 1.6 mm outside, 0.8 mm hole | Cylinder, ø1.65 × 1.3 mm | Cylinder, ø1.65 × 1.3 mm | [8][16][17] |
| Beads per gram (approx.) | About 200 | About 186 | About 186 | [8][7] |
| Other sizes | 15/0 (DBS), 10/0 (DBM), 8/0 (DBL) | One size | One size (11/0) | [8][4] |
| How the maker positions it | Uniform cylinder that leaves no gaps when woven | Top grade, “for professionals” | “For light users”, priced lower | [21][16][17] |
| Listed price in Japan | ¥160 per 3 g (DB1–DB10, DB200–DB202) | ¥407–¥572 per 3 g | ¥110–¥264 per 3 g | [22][23][24][25] |
| Color system | DB numbers shared across DBS/DB/DBM/DBL | Aiko numbers (incl. PF) | Treasure numbers | [26][24][25] |
So Miyuki Delica vs Toho Treasure (Toho Treasures vs Delicas) is mostly color range and price: Delica has four sizes and a shared color system; Treasure is one 11/0 size priced for everyday use. Toho Aiko vs Miyuki Delica is about how even you need the beads: Toho sells Aiko (searched as Toho Aiko precision cylinder seed beads) as its top grade.[16][17] Can you mix them? They are close, but Aiko and Treasure run about 186 per gram vs about 200 for Delica DB, so use one maker per flat piece.[7][8] There is no “Toho Delica”: Delica is a MIYUKI trademark; Aiko and Treasure are the Miyuki Delica alternatives.[2][4]
Miyuki Delica vs round seed beads
Miyuki Delica vs round (Miyuki seed beads vs Delica): a round 11/0 is 2.0 mm round with about 110 beads per gram; a Delica 11/0 is a 1.6 mm cylinder with about 200 per gram. Delica to round conversion is not one-to-one: for the same width you need more Delicas.[9][8] Toho vs Miyuki in general: similar sizes, different shapes and finishes; if you mix Toho and Miyuki seed beads, keep each row to one maker.
Finishes, Colors and Durability
The color and look of a bead depend on the glass type (transparent, opaque, alabaster, silk) and the finish applied to the surface or the inside of the hole.[27] MIYUKI rates each finish on three tests (fading from UV and age, peeling from sweat and friction, and color loss in dry cleaning) on a 1–4 scale, where 1 is the most resistant:[27]
| Glass or finish | Fading / peeling / dry cleaning | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent (スキ), opaque (ギョク), alabaster, silk | 1 / 1 / 1 | Color is in the glass; silk is a little more fragile | [27] |
| Matte (ツヤ消し / frosted) | 1 / 1 / 1 | Frosted-glass surface | [27] |
| Luster, rainbow, Ceylon, metallic, glass enamel | 2 / 2 / 2 | Surface or inside-hole finishes | [27] |
| Silver-lined (銀引) | 3 / 3 / 3 | Silver can turn yellowish over time | [27] |
| Color-lined (中染め) | 3 / 2 / 4 | Can lose color in strong solvents or when rubbed with detergent | [27] |
| Gold luster | 4 / 3 / 3 | Some colors fade in UV light | [27] |
| Galvanized (外銀) | 3 / 4 / 4 | Not fired; perfume and hand cream can discolor it | [27] |
| Duracoat (coated galvanized or dyed) | 2 / 3 / 3 | Tougher, but MIYUKI says it is not immune to wear | [27] |
| Plated (gold, nickel, palladium) | 2 / 3 / 2 | Premium price; not suitable for metal allergies | [27] |
| Picasso, special coating, baroque | 2–3 / 2–3 / 3–4 | Patterns vary by lot by design | [27] |
- Miyuki seed bead finishes in Japanese: スキ (transparent), ギョク (opaque), アラバス (alabaster), 銀引 (silver-lined), 中染め (color-lined), ツヤ消し (matte), 外銀 (galvanized), メッキ (plated). Words such as AB, opal or pearl in a color name are part of that color’s name; the Beads Directory shows each number’s glass type and finish.[27][51]
- Miyuki beads durability: MIYUKI’s Delica durability chart rates every Delica color on the same tests, including colors not sold in Japan.[57]
- Duracoat galvanized: MIYUKI’s 2008 coating over galvanized or dyed beads resists peeling; MIYUKI FACTORY lists Duracoat galvanized silver and golden colors such as #4221 in 15/0, 11/0 and 8/0.[2][29][27]
- Toho PermaFinish (PF): Toho permanent finish beads (Toho permafinish galvanized beads) resist discoloration and fading better than the same colors without PF, but strong impact, constant friction and organic solvents such as perfume can still remove color.[20]
- Do Toho beads fade or tarnish? Some dyed, silver-lined and galvanized colors can (silver can yellow); colors in the glass do not. The same number can also vary between production periods.[27][58]
- Are Miyuki seed beads waterproof? The glass is. Transparent, opaque, alabaster and matte beads are rated 1 on all three tests; the finishes are what wear. MIYUKI’s tests cover UV, sweat, friction and dry cleaning, not swimming.[27]
- Glow in the dark and luminous: MIYUKI sells “Luminous” (ルミナスカラー) round colors; whether a color glows in the dark is not stated on the pages we read, so check the listing.[29]
- Are glass beads toxic? MIYUKI publishes information on nickel, lead and cadmium and says some products may contain substances restricted in certain markets; plated beads are not suitable for metal allergies.[59][27] Beads are also small parts and a choking hazard for small children.[49]
Miyuki Delica color searches (matte black, opaque red, gunmetal, gold, rose gold, royal blue, navy, light blue, teal, turquoise, emerald, olive, fuchsia, hot pink, neon, purple, lavender, violet, lila, orange, terracotta, topaz, yellow, opal, silk satin, alabaster, moonstone mix, white pearl AB, Picasso) map to color numbers you can filter by color in the Directory.[51] Delica bead color combinations and palettes: MIYUKI sells “Color Palette” sets of matching colors, and Toho’s Rakuten store sells a Treasure four-color trial set.[29][25] Are glass beads expensive, or worth anything used? New packs cost ¥110 and up (see prices); we have no resale data.
How Seed Beads Are Used: Weaving, Loom, Peyote and Embroidery
- Bead weaving and loom: Delica was developed for bead weaving; a Japanese bead loom or Delica bead loom pattern uses cylinders so rows sit flat.[21] MIYUKI’s Beading Portal has free patterns, tutorials on techniques and a Photo Converter that turns an image into a peyote stitch, square stitch or bead loom chart.[60]
- Peyote and brick stitch: cylinders (Delica, Aiko, Treasure) are the usual choice; Toho recommends Treasure for brick and peyote stitch.[61] Tools such as a Delica peyote starter device are sold in the tools section of bead shops, including MIYUKI FACTORY.[31]
- Bead embroidery: rounds, bugles and drops; MIYUKI’s silver-lined beads have long been used in haute couture and beaded bags, and its shop sells embroidery kits.[21][31] For thread-and-needle Japanese embroidery, see our sashiko embroidery guide.
- Stringing and lacing: magatama and 8/0 or 6/0 rounds for necklaces and bracelets; “beads lacing” (ビーズレーシング) kits are sold at BEADS FACTORY.[14][62]
- Machine embroidery: Toho Q Beads are made with hole and outside diameters for embroidery machines.[55]
Japanese bead patterns, pattern books and beading magazines (such as the ビーズfriend magazine Toho mentions) use Japanese bead names and MIYUKI or TOHO color numbers.[56] You may sell handmade items made from MIYUKI’s free patterns as an individual, with a “Design provided by MIYUKI” credit.[49] Seed beads ideas and DIY projects: Delica bead earrings, hoop earrings, rings, keychains, charms, anklets, pendants, men’s bracelets and necklaces, lanyards, heart and fish motifs, beaded animals (MIYUKI’s 1970s “Mini Pet” kits made animals and insects), flowers, Christmas ornaments, bead chains, clutch bags, purses and handbags, Japanese knot bags, and seed bead art and tapestry; Toho’s Gallery t shows beadwork as contemporary art.[21][3] For craft scissors, see our Japanese scissors brands guide.
Kits, Sample Cards and Storage
- Miyuki kits: MIYUKI has developed about 3,000 kits since the 1970s; bracelet, Tila, earring and starter kits are sold at MIYUKI FACTORY and BEADS FACTORY.[21][31][62]
- Sample cards and catalogs: MIYUKI sells real-bead sample books for 11/0 rounds (¥8,800), 15/0 rounds (¥8,800) and Delica (¥22,000), plus a printed glass bead catalog (¥1,100); the Miyuki Delica catalog (catalogue) and sample cards are also free PDF downloads.[31][50] Toho posts its sample cards online.[19]
- Variety packs and multipacks: Delica assortments, 11/0 sets and bead mixes are sold as color sets, such as MIYUKI’s Color Palette sets.[29]
- Storage: Toho’s “Queen Beads” tubes are octagonal plastic cases 67 mm tall and 14 mm across; MIYUKI FACTORY sells tools and storage, and BEADS FACTORY sells cases, frames, looms and Delica weaving fittings; look there for a Delica bead organizer or graph paper.[6][31][62]

Open 10:00–17:00; closed Sundays, holidays and some Saturdays.[63]
- BEADS FACTORY (Fukuyama): Japan’s first bead specialty store (1987), about 20,000 items, with a “Bead Concierge” for color advice and repair of bead accessories; the Beadwork Gallery upstairs is open by reservation.[63][64] Its online shop carries about 30,000 items.[62]
- TOHO in Tokyo: TOHO BEADS STYLE Tokyo Gallery t at 1-9-11 Yanagibashi, Taito-ku (five minutes from Asakusabashi Station), open Monday–Friday 10:00–18:00 for exhibitions.[65] Toho beads style Tokyo gallery t, Toho beads style Osaka and t (opened 2015) and Hiroshima and t (2016) are Toho’s own spaces.[54]
- Hiroshima: Hiroshima City lists TOHO BEADS Style Store Hiroshima and the Sun Mall bead boutique as retailers; TOHO also holds open factory days at its Hiroshima Plant.[35][56]
- Classes: the Japan Seed Beads Association, a bead school run by TOHO, is based at Toho’s Tokyo branch.[66]
Hiroshima City also lists craft shops across Japan as TOHO retailers and suppliers.[35] For 100-yen craft supplies, see our Daiso Japan buying guide.
Buying Online: Miyuki Beads Japan Online and Toho’s Shop
Where to buy Japanese seed beads online in Japan:
- MIYUKI FACTORY online store (miyukifactory.com): Delica DB, DBS, DBM, MIYUKI seed beads, TILA, Czech and wooden beads, kits, embroidery supplies and tools; free shipping in Japan from ¥10,000.[31]
- BEADS FACTORY online shop (beadsfactory.co.jp): MIYUKI seed beads and Delica plus imported beads; free shipping in Japan from ¥5,000.[62]
- TOHO BEADS STYLE Beads Market: Toho’s FAQ points buyers to its online shop “Beads Market”, and Toho runs a Rakuten store under the same name with Aiko, Treasure, Demi and round beads, including PermaFinish colors such as PF557.[58][16][33]
MIYUKI’s FAQ adds a note for flea-market shoppers: beads sold on Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and similar sites may not have come through regular sales channels, and MIYUKI does not cover quality or support for items bought outside its dealers.[52] With secondhand lots you rely on the seller’s description. OneMall does not independently verify the origin or quality of goods either.[67]

Other Japanese Beads (Not Seed Beads)
Searches for “Japanese beads” also mean these traditional items. Brief definitions from Kotobank:
| Name | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Tombo-dama (蜻蛉玉 / とんぼ玉) | Glass beads inlaid with other colors; the “eye” dots look like a dragonfly’s compound eye. Found in Japan from the Kofun period; Osaka and Chiba make them today | [36] |
| Ojime (緒締) | A bead that cinches the cords of a pouch or inro; often round, in stone, horn, metal or coral | [37] |
| Juzu (数珠) | Buddhist prayer beads; usually 108 beads (also 54 or 27) | [38] |
| Ohajiki (おはじき) | A flicking game; glass pieces from the Meiji era, plastic after the war | [39] |
| Tama-noren (珠暖簾) | A doorway curtain of strings threaded with balls or tubes | [40] |
| Glass fishing floats (浮子) | Hollow glass balls once floated fishing nets; most floats are plastic now | [41] |
Japanese beads meaning: juzu are Japanese religious beads (monk beads), a Buddhist rosary used when praying; the Zen sect uses 18-bead juzu and nembutsu sects 36. Japan beads toy: ohajiki. Japanese beaded curtains (a bead door curtain of hanging beads) are tama-noren. Japanese glass balls (glass floats) are hollow fishing-net floats; we have no source for their value or price today. Tombo-dama are still made as regional crafts in Osaka (Fujiidera) and Chiba.[38][40][41][36] For Japanese pearls, see our Japanese jewelry brands guide.
How to Buy Japanese Seed Beads from the US
MIYUKI FACTORY, BEADS FACTORY and Toho’s Rakuten store sell to Japanese addresses; their pages we read show domestic shipping terms only.[31][62][16] A proxy service closes the gap:
(11/0 seed beads).
- Buy by color number: write down DB numbers or Toho numbers from the color chart or Directory first, since screen colors differ from real beads.[49]
- Use LinkBuy for maker shops: paste a MIYUKI FACTORY, BEADS FACTORY or other Japanese shop URL into LinkBuy; Toho’s Rakuten store and Rakuten listings can be bought directly. See our LinkBuy guide.
- Skip what cannot ship: glass seed beads are not on OneMall’s prohibited list, but flammable liquids (which can include some bead glues and resins), nail polish, sprays and magnetic materials are. Leave magnetic clasps, sprays and flammable adhesives out of the order.[68]
- Bundle and check: beads are small, so several shops’ orders consolidate well into one parcel. Add a wrong/missing item check (¥200) at the Tokyo warehouse to compare packs with the order before international shipping.[69] See our guide to shipping small items and consolidation.
OneMall buys from Japanese marketplaces such as Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Rakuten and Amazon Japan, and from other Japanese online stores (including maker web shops) through LinkBuy. Items that need a lottery entry, purchase limit, Japanese identity verification or a merchant account cannot be purchased. International shipping is charged on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight (length × width × height ÷ 5,000) of the box the warehouse uses.
Service fees are ¥300 per item on most marketplaces; from ¥200 per item on Yahoo Auctions and LinkBuy. The first six orders consolidate free; each additional order costs ¥100. Storage is free for 90 days after arrival (30 days after consolidation). Payment is by Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, settled in USD.
US buyers: since August 29, 2025, US-bound parcels of any value go through customs and pay applicable duties, taxes and fees — the $800 de minimis exemption no longer applies. OneMall currently ships to the United States by ECMS, DHL and Japan Post EMS (DDP — declared value up to USD 2,500, duties prepaid with the shipping fee); the live quote at checkout shows which lines accept your parcel.
For duties on US-bound parcels, see our US import tax and customs guide.
If something breaks: damage caused inside the warehouse by OneMall is refunded at the item’s purchase price; damage in international transit is compensated up to the international shipping fee paid, and must be reported within 24 hours with the order number, photos and a full unboxing video. Loss in transit is handled by the carrier, and OneMall helps confirm with the carrier and file the claim within 72 hours. Duties and customs fees are paid by the buyer.
Compare the best Japan proxy services and proxy costs by total landed cost. For more Japanese craft supplies, see our Japanese yarn brands guide, sashiko embroidery guide and origami paper and washi guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Japanese seed beads?
Small, uniform glass beads made by MIYUKI (Fukuyama) and TOHO (Hiroshima), sold by aught size (15/0, 11/0, 8/0, 6/0) and shape: rounds, cylinders (Delica, Aiko, Treasure), bugles, drops, Tila and more.
What is the difference between Miyuki and Delica?
Delica is one MIYUKI product: its cylinder bead. “Miyuki seed beads” usually means MIYUKI’s round rocailles; Delicas are cylinders with about 200 beads per gram in 11/0, vs about 110 for rounds.
Miyuki Delica vs Toho Treasure: which should I buy?
Both are 11/0 cylinders for weaving and stitching. Delica has four sizes and a shared DB color system; Treasure is Toho’s lower-priced cylinder, and Aiko its top-grade one. Use one maker per flat piece.
What size is an 11/0 seed bead in mm?
About 2.0 mm for MIYUKI rounds and 2.0–2.2 mm for TOHO rounds; a Delica 11/0 is 1.6 mm. 8/0 is about 3 mm and 15/0 about 1.5 mm.
Can I buy Miyuki beads on Mercari through OneMall?
Yes, but MIYUKI says it does not support items bought outside its dealers, and OneMall does not verify where goods came from. For color-critical work, buy from MIYUKI FACTORY or BEADS FACTORY through LinkBuy.
