TL;DR
Japanese fishing tackle is two giants and a very deep bench. Shimano and Daiwa make the reels the world fishes with; Megabass, Jackall, Evergreen, Deps, O.S.P and Imakatsu make the lures and rods that bass anglers import; YGK, Sunline, Varivas and Seaguar make the line; Gamakatsu and Owner make the hooks. Most of the interesting models are JDM — Japan-domestic-market — and never get an export SKU. In a sweep of 637 live Japanese listings on 11 September 2026 the median asking price was ¥4,500.
- JDM reels are different reels. A Japanese Stella or Exist is not the same specification as the export version, and the Japanese used market is the only place to buy older JDM generations.
- Lures are where Japan is untouchable — and where an order of ten small boxes ships cheaply.
- Outdoor crossover: mont-bell, Snow Peak and Japan-market Coleman gear sit on the same marketplaces.
- Current curated picks are on the Japan fishing & outdoor picks page.

Asking prices from 637 live listings across Amazon Japan, Mercari, Rakuten, Suruga-ya, Yahoo Auctions, Yahoo Fleamarket. Reel medians mix new and used and mix generations — a current Stella and a 2010 Stella share a name and not a price — so treat them as a market shape.
The two giants: Shimano and Daiwa
Shimano
Shimano’s spinning tiers, top down, are Stella, Vanquish, Twin Power, Stradic and below; baitcasters run Antares, Metanium, Curado and SLX. The JDM point is the generation number: Japanese anglers refer to a reel by its model year (“22 Stella”, “24 Twin Power”), and each JDM generation arrives a year or more before, and in more sizes than, the export line. Rods include the Poison Adrena and Poison Glorious series co-developed with Jackall — a Japan-only collaboration.
Daiwa
Daiwa is the fishing brand of GLOBERIDE, Inc., which also runs golf (ONOFF), racquet sports (Prince) and cycling brands[1]. Spinning tiers run Exist, Certate, Luvias, Caldia; bass gear under Steez; and the DAIWA PIER39 line[1] turns fishing wear into fashion. As with Shimano, the JDM generation (“22 Exist”) is the real model name.
The lure and rod houses
Megabass describes itself as a comprehensive sport-fishing and outdoor maker and runs an in-house design programme (ITO Design)[2]; its catalogue spans the Destroyer, Orochi X10 and Levante bass rods, the Great Hunting trout rods and lures, the Cookai saltwater rods, and the Vision minnows and a full lure range from topwater to swimbaits[2]. Evergreen publishes new releases almost weekly across bass, area trout and seabass — the Combat bass rods, Avant-garde seabass rods and Orion series among them[3]. Jackall, Deps, O.S.P and Imakatsu round out the tournament bass scene, each with a signature big-bait or soft-bait line that costs a multiple abroad of its Japanese price.
Saltwater is its own ecosystem: Tackle House, ima, Duo and Yo-Zuri for plugs; Yamaga Blanks, Tenryu and Major Craft for shore rods.
Line, hooks and the small stuff
This is the category where a proxy order makes the most sense per gram. YGK X-Braid Upgrade X8 and the rest of the PE braids, Sunline and Varivas fluorocarbon and nylon, Seaguar fluorocarbon, and Gamakatsu and Owner hooks all ship as small, light packets. Japanese line is sold by the 号 (gou) number rather than by pound test; 1号 PE is roughly 0.165 mm, and the lb rating printed alongside varies by maker.
Mid-tier reels, gear ratios and the size numbers
Below the flagships, the JDM mid-tier is where most anglers actually shop: Shimano Twin Power, Vanquish, Stradic and Ultegra; Daiwa Certate, Luvias and the bass-oriented Tatula and Steez. Reel names carry a size — 2500, C3000, 4000 — where the number is body/spool class and a C prefix means a compact body on a larger spool; and a gear ratio suffix — HG (high gear) or XG (extra high) — that changes retrieve speed. A “22 Stella C3000XG” is therefore fully specified in the Japanese listing title.
Lure and rod names that come up
Megabass is a proper noun most overseas anglers only know from a few lures: the Pop-X popper, the Dog-X walker, the Vision Oneten jerkbait, the Griffon crankbait and the X-80, plus the Destroyer rod series — all in the sweep, most well under ¥3,000 used. On the reel side the mid-tier names were Shimano Nasci, Stradic, Calcutta, Antares and Metanium, Daiwa Zillion, Tatula, Steez and Exist. Japan also sells the categories export markets barely see: ultralight finesse rods for ajing and mebaru, telescopic and pocket travel rods, tenkara and fly gear, carp and herabuna tackle, and bait-counter electric reels. Searching “Daiwa reel for pike” or “for bass” is answered by the size number, not a model: a 4000-class spinning reel covers pike, 2500 covers most bass and trout.
Maintenance, spare parts and custom handles
Japan is also the source for reel oil and grease kits, replacement handles and knobs, spare spools, drag washers and the aftermarket custom parts (Livre, Gomexus and the like) that fit JDM reels. Handle and knob listings were the single most common accessory in the sweep, followed by reel guards, pouches, maintenance spray, caps and the “old” (オールド) vintage reels — 1980s Shimano and Daiwa baitcasters and the early Stella generations — which are a collector market of their own. Shimano’s DC (digital control braking) baitcasters, surf-casting reels and gold-finish limited editions are the other JDM-heavy corners. A rod-and-reel combo is rarely sold as one in Japan; buy the two separately and have the proxy ship them together. Electric reels (電動リール) for offshore jigging are another JDM-heavy category with almost no export presence.
Outdoor brands on the same shelves
mont-bell wading jackets and rain shells, Snow Peak camp hardware and Coleman’s Japan-market colourways and fuel all circulate on Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and Rakuten alongside the tackle. Coleman is the surprise: the Japanese subsidiary releases designs and colours that never reach the US catalogue.
JDM vs export: what you actually gain
| JDM (Japanese market) | Export | |
|---|---|---|
| Release timing | First | Usually a year or more later |
| Sizes and gear ratios | Full range, including finesse sizes | Subset |
| Model naming | By year (“22 Stella”) | By letter suffix |
| Warranty | Japan only | Local |
| Used market | Deep, graded, cheap | Thin |
| Manuals | Japanese | Local language |
The warranty row is the honest trade-off. A JDM reel bought used has no service coverage outside Japan, so buy from shops that grade condition (Suruga-ya, Tackle Berry-type resellers on Rakuten) rather than untested private listings if that matters to you.
How to buy Japanese tackle from overseas
- Search in Japanese. シマノ ステラ and ダイワ イグジスト return far more than the English spellings.
- Read the generation. The two-digit year in a listing title is the model. “18 Stella” and “22 Stella” are different reels.
- Rods ship long. One-piece rods over 1.5 m are the single most expensive category to ship and some carriers refuse them; two-piece and travel rods avoid the problem.
- Consolidate lures and line. Twenty lure boxes in one parcel is where a proxy earns its fee.
Our JDM tackle buying guide walks the process end to end, and the Japan fishing & outdoor picks page has the current curated picks.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best Japanese fishing brands?
Shimano and Daiwa for reels; Megabass, Jackall, Evergreen, Deps and O.S.P for bass lures and rods; YGK, Sunline, Varivas and Seaguar for line; Gamakatsu and Owner for hooks. “Best” depends on the water — the saltwater and trout specialists are different names again.
Is Shimano or Daiwa better?
They trade places by tier and generation. Anglers tend to pick a side by feel — Shimano’s smoothness against Daiwa’s lightness — and both flagships are excellent. The JDM point is that both are cheaper and come in more sizes bought in Japan.
Is fishing tackle cheaper in Japan?
For Japanese brands, yes, and dramatically so for lures and line. For used reels the gap is largest, because the Japanese used market is deep and graded.
Is there a Japanese fishing show?
Two: the Japan Fishing Show in Yokohama in January and Fishing Show Osaka in February, where Shimano, Daiwa and the lure houses debut the year’s models. The new-year model numbers (a “22” or “24” prefix on a Stella or Certate is the model year) start appearing on the used market within weeks.
Where do I get parts diagrams or warranty service for a JDM reel?
Shimano and Daiwa publish exploded parts diagrams for JDM models on their Japanese sites and parts can be ordered domestically; export-market warranty does not cover a JDM reel, so budget for an independent service shop or a proxy return to Japan. Reel cases, bags and rod holders are all cheap add-ons in the same listings.
Can I buy Japanese tackle in Australia, the US or the UK?
Some Shimano and Daiwa export lines, yes; the JDM references, the lure houses and the small brands, generally no. Online Japanese marketplaces through a proxy are the way to reach them from anywhere.
Can I buy a JDM reel and get it serviced at home?
Parts are usually available through the brand’s local service, but warranty coverage is Japan-only. Independent reel technicians service JDM reels routinely.
