What shipping from Japan to the UK costs today

Three things drive the number. Weight bands: Japan Post prices step every 500 g, so a 1.1 kg parcel is billed as 1.5 kg. Volumetric weight: length × width × height in cm ÷ 5,000; if that exceeds the scale weight, you pay for the volume — a 40×30×25 cm box of plush is billed as 6 kg however light it is. The carrier crossover: EMS wins below about 2 kg, DHL wins above it and is a week faster; Seamail is a third of the price of either at 10 kg if you can wait. Size and weight limits on this route

• EMS: up to 30 kg; longest side 1.5 m and length + girth under 2.75 m (girth = 2 × (width + height))^[2].
• Seamail: up to 30 kg; longest side 1.05 m and length + girth under 2 m — a 60×45×40 cm box already fails this, which is why Seamail sometimes disappears from the quote^[2].
• DHL: up to 70 kg; surcharges above 30 kg or 1 m on the longest side; anything over 30 kg or 1.5 m is routed to DHL automatically^[2].
• Irregular items (any side over 60 cm, or rods, rackets, skis, instruments) must take the reinforcement service: ¥800 up to 10 kg, then ¥100 per kg, capped at ¥2,000^[4].

Customs, tax and duty in the UK
