TL;DR
San-X’s two big properties — Rilakkuma (September 2003) and Sumikko Gurashi (September 2012) — sell most of their range through channels that do not ship abroad, including San-X’s own online shop. The general-release plush is cheap and easy to import; the store exclusives, seasonal prize plush and complete tenori sets are the reason to use a proxy at all. And plush is light but bulky, which changes how you should ship it.

As of August 2026. Sanrio gets the English-language attention, but San-X is the house that owns the two properties most likely to be sold out in Japan and unavailable everywhere else. This guide covers what is genuinely Japan-only, what a complete set actually costs, and the one shipping mistake that doubles your bill.
San-X Is Not Sanrio, and That Matters for Availability
San-X is a separate Japanese character company. Its flagship properties are Rilakkuma — introduced in September 2003[2] — and Sumikko Gurashi, introduced in September 2012 around the idea of characters who feel most at ease tucked into a corner[3]. The Sumikko cast has grown to 69 named characters, from Shirokuma the shy northern bear to Tonkatsu, the leftover edge of a pork cutlet[3].
The distribution difference is what overseas buyers run into. Sanrio operates official English storefronts in several markets. San-X’s own net shop states plainly that it is a Japanese domestic service and does not ship internationally, on the grounds that its products are manufactured and sold to Japanese standards and are not compliant with other countries’ sales rules[1]. That is not a shipping preference you can appeal — it is a policy, and it applies to the exclusives too.
Chairoikoguma’s 10th anniversary is this year’s reason to buy
Chairoikoguma joined the Rilakkuma cast in 2016 and is being given 10th anniversary treatment across 2026’s goods calendar[2]. Anniversary lines follow a predictable pattern in Japan: a dated run, sold through Japanese retail and the character stores, never restocked. If you want it, you want it this year and you want it from Japan.

Stock-checked on 29 August 2026. One new retail item and two secondhand sets, chosen to show the three price tiers you will actually meet.
The middle listing is the one worth studying. Five tenori plush from the 2025 Youkai Halloween run, unused, sold as a complete set at ¥8,800 — about ¥1,760 per figure. Individually these were prize and store items; a Japanese reseller did the collecting. Paying a premium for someone else’s completed set is almost always cheaper than chasing five separate listings and paying five service fees.
Shipping Plush: Light, Bulky, and Priced on Air
This is the part that surprises people. Carriers bill on whichever is greater, actual weight or volumetric weight — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 5,000[4]. A plush bundle weighs almost nothing and occupies a lot of box, so it is nearly always billed on volume.
We quoted two real parcels on 29 August 2026: a single tenori plush at 150 g in an 18×14×12 cm box, and a bundle at 900 g in a 40×30×25 cm box.

Look at the United States row against every other row. On the US lane no sea option quoted, so the bundle’s volumetric weight had to be paid at air rates — US$50.65 versus US$20.99 for one small plush, a 2.4× jump for goods weighing 750 g more. On the sea lanes, the same bulk cost nothing extra at all: one plush and a whole bundle both priced at the opening band.
So the rule splits by destination:
- Europe, Australia, Canada, Singapore: use sea mail and buy as much plush as you like. The box is essentially free until you leave the first band.
- United States: the box size is your bill. Ask for compressed packing, buy tenori and mascot sizes rather than large plush, and consolidate so you pay one volumetric charge instead of three.
How to Buy San-X Goods From Japan: The Actual Steps
- Step 1 — Search in Japanese. すみっコぐらし and リラックマ return an order of magnitude more than the romanised spellings. Add てのり (palm-size), ますコット (mascot) or 限定 (limited) to narrow it.
- Step 2 — Prefer complete sets over singles. Each separate order carries its own service fee (from ¥200, capped at ¥300 on Mercari and Yahoo! auctions). One ¥8,800 set of five costs one fee; five listings cost five.
- Step 3 — Check the tag wording. タグ付 (tag attached) and 未使用 (unused) are what collectors pay for. 中古良好 means used but good. On prize plush, a missing tag can halve the value.
- Step 4 — Let orders accumulate. Storage is free for 90 days, which is more than enough time to catch a seasonal release and a store exclusive in the same shipment.
- Step 5 — Consolidate and ask for compact packing. Free for your first 6 orders, ¥100 per order after that. Plush compresses; ask for it. This is the single biggest lever on a plush shipping bill.
- Step 6 — Choose sea mail unless you are US-bound or in a hurry. Plush is not fragile and not perishable; 30–90 days at sea costs it nothing.
Customs in 2026
The United States revoked the US$800 de minimis duty-free exemption on 29 August 2025 under Executive Order 14324[5][6], so US-bound parcels are dutiable regardless of value — a US$60 set of plush is a customs entry. Japan Post resumed accepting US-bound mail on 14 April 2026[7]. UK buyers pay import VAT above the low-value threshold and duty above a higher one[8].
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I order directly from the San-X online shop?
Not from overseas. San-X’s own delivery guide states the shop is a Japanese domestic service and does not handle international shipping, because its products are made and sold to Japanese standards rather than other countries’ requirements[1]. A proxy service gives you a Japanese delivery address and forwards the parcel.
What is the difference between Sumikko Gurashi and Rilakkuma goods?
Both are San-X. Rilakkuma launched in September 2003[2] and skews slightly older and more collectable, with a long history of store exclusives and anniversary runs. Sumikko Gurashi launched in September 2012[3] with a much larger cast — 69 characters — which makes complete-set collecting the dominant mode.
Why is shipping plush so expensive to the US?
Because plush is billed on volumetric weight and, in our 29 August 2026 quotes, the US lane offered no sea mail option. A 900 g bundle in a 40×30×25 cm box quoted US$50.65 versus US$20.99 for a single small plush. To Europe or Australia the same bundle went by sea for under US$20. Compressed packing and consolidation are the fix.
Are prize plush lower quality than retail plush?
Different, not worse. Kuji and crane-game plush are made to a prize specification and are frequently larger and softer than the retail equivalents, which is exactly why collectors want them. They were never sold at retail anywhere, so the Japanese secondhand market is the only route.
Is buying a completed set cheaper than collecting singles?
Usually, once you count fees. Five separate orders mean five service fees and five sourcing risks; the ¥8,800 five-piece set above works out to about ¥1,760 a figure with one fee. The exception is when you only want one character — then buy the single and skip the set premium.
