Buying from Japanese Marketplaces: Mercari, Yahoo Auctions, Rakuten, Amazon Japan & More

Japan’s best prices sit on platforms that were never designed for overseas buyers: Mercari and Rakuma for second-hand goods, Yahoo Auctions for rare and collectible items, Rakuten and Amazon Japan for new products, Suruga-ya, BOOK OFF, Hard Off, Mandarake and Lashinbang for used hobby goods, and ZOZOTOWN, 2nd STREET and SNKRDUNK for fashion. Most of them ship only within Japan or reject foreign cards, which is why these guides explain each platform’s search tricks, condition grades, seller rules and checkout quirks alongside how to order through a proxy.

A few platform facts that come up again and again: Mercari sellers must ship within seven days of purchase, and on individual-seller listings priced ¥1,001 or more OneMall can send a price negotiation down to 80% of the asking price; Yahoo Auctions charges a 3% fee on the winning bid plus tax (¥200–¥300) and supports scheduled bidding in the final seven minutes; Amazon Japan and Rakuten listings are new goods with store return policies, while second-hand platforms are generally final sale once the seller accepts the order. OneMall’s fee on all of these is per item, never per order.

Pick the platform below. If you are still deciding whether to use a proxy at all, read the proxy shopping guide first; for what happens after your parcel reaches the warehouse, see shipping, customs and fees.
