Remembering Yayoi Kusama (1929–2026): Her Japan-Only Books, Museum Editions and Collaborations — and the Cheap and Cheapest Way to Buy Them From Japan
Yayoi Kusama died on 14 August 2026 at a hospital in Tokyo, aged 97. Her studio announced it on 27 August, writing that she “continued to paint until her final days, never setting aside her brush.” She spent seventy years turning a compulsion into a language the whole world learned to read. This is a guide to what she left behind that you can still hold.
29 live listings checked
TL;DR — the short answer
Almost all Kusama merchandise worth owning — museum editions, Japanese-language art books, the 2017 G-SHOCK collaboration, LV × YK resale — sits on Japanese platforms that do not ship abroad. A proxy buyer solves that. Entry points start under ¥1,000; the LV collaborations run into six figures.
- Cheapest real entry — her autobiography Infinity Net in Japanese paperback, about ¥825.
- The signature piece — polka-dot pumpkin objets, currently around ¥30,500 for a two-piece set.
- Almost everything is one-of-one — of the 29 live listings we verified, 27 had exactly one unit. This is a second-hand market, not a catalogue.
- Museum-limited goods never had international distribution — Kyocera Museum and Matsumoto City Museum totes only ever existed in their gift shops.
Seventy years of dots
Kusama was born in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Nagano[1]. She moved to the United States in 1957 and began showing work from New York the following year, where her Infinity Net paintings and mirrored environments put her at the centre of the 1960s avant-garde. She returned to Japan in 1973 and resumed writing fiction and poetry alongside the painting[1].
The dots and nets were never decoration. Kusama described them as something she saw — a visual field that expanded until it covered the room — and painting them was how she stayed on the outside of it. That is why the work reads as joyful and relentless at the same time.
Her studio’s announcement of her death on 27 August 2026 closed with a commitment to “carry forward Kusama’s wishes and, through art, continue to bring hope and strength for the future to people around the world”[2]. The Yayoi Kusama Museum in Shinjuku, which she founded and which opened in 2017, remains the permanent home of that project[3].

Pumpkin objets, two-piece set
The piece most people picture when they hear her name. Two resin pumpkins, sold together.

Louis Vuitton, G-SHOCK and the fashion crossovers
Kusama collaborated with Louis Vuitton twice — first in 2012, then again in 2023 for the “Creating Infinity” collection built on her Painted Dots, Infinity Dots and Psychedelic Flowers motifs. Both are resale-only now, and Japan is where the deepest inventory sits.

Art books, exhibition catalogues and her own writing
The section with the lowest barrier to entry and, arguably, the highest information density. Japanese exhibition catalogues are printed in small runs for the show and then never again.

Living with the dots — stationery and home goods
The everyday tier. These are the pieces people actually use, and the ones that disappear quietly because nobody treats them as collectible until they are gone.

How to buy Kusama goods from Japan
Every listing on this page lives on a Japanese platform — Mercari, Rakuma, Rakuten, Yahoo! Auctions, Yahoo! Flea Market, Suruga-ya. None of them ship to a US address, and most will not accept a foreign card. A proxy buyer with a Japanese address is the whole solution.
-
Search in Japanese, not English
Query 草間彌生 — note the 彌 character, which is the form she used. English searches for “Yayoi Kusama” return a fraction of the same inventory. Add 限定 for museum editions or 図録 for catalogues.
-
Assume one unit and act accordingly
27 of the 29 live listings we checked had a single copy. If you are comparing three options for a week, expect at least one to be gone. Order the one you want.
-
Understand the fee before you commit
Marketplace orders carry a flat ¥300 proxy fee. Yahoo! Auctions is different: the fee is 3% of the winning bid including tax, with a ¥200 floor and a ¥300 ceiling — so on a ¥168,000 wallet it is still capped at ¥300.
-
Add inspection on anything expensive or fragile
Unboxing photos, empty-package checks and wrong-item checks are all available before the parcel leaves Japan. Resin objets and glass snow globes justify the packaging-retention option too.
-
Consolidate, then ship
The first six orders combine into one parcel free; each order past six adds ¥100. Storage is free for 90 days, so you can build a set across several sellers before paying to ship anything.
Buy Kusama pieces from Japan, delivered to your door
OneMall buys on Mercari, Rakuma, Rakuten, Yahoo! Auctions, Suruga-ya and any Japanese store through Universal Shopping, inspects the parcel at the Japanese warehouse and ships it on. Flat ¥300 proxy fee per marketplace order, 90 days of free storage while you consolidate.
Frequently asked questions
When did Yayoi Kusama die?
What is the cheapest Yayoi Kusama item worth buying?
Her autobiography 無限の網 (Infinity Net) in Japanese paperback, around ¥825. After that, postcards from about ¥1,800 and the LOVE FOREVER keyrings from about ¥3,000. The cheapest way to buy any of them from overseas is to order several together and consolidate into one parcel.
Why can’t I buy Kusama museum goods directly?
Museum gift-shop editions — the Kyocera Museum and Matsumoto City Museum totes, the Yayoi Kusama Museum’s own goods — are sold on site or through Japanese domestic channels only. There was never an international storefront, so once a show closes the only route is Japanese resale.
Are the Louis Vuitton × Kusama pieces authentic on Japanese resale?
Japanese second-hand luxury dealers are unusually rigorous, and many of the listings here come from established resale businesses rather than individuals. That said, on a six-figure item use the inspection and authentication services before the parcel ships — verification in Japan is far easier than a dispute after delivery.
Will prices go up now?
We are not going to predict that. What is verifiable is supply: this is a finite second-hand market, and 27 of the 29 in-stock listings we checked on 27 August 2026 were the seller’s only copy. Buy what you actually want to own, not what you hope to flip.
