Boasting a chronicle that spans centuries, the Japanese brand Seiko is synonymous with “innovation and sophistication”, denoting the acme of craftsmanship and technology in the watchmaking industry. Its inventively chic, trendy, and classic designs have endeared it to aficionados of quality timepieces across diverse strata of the society.

Seiko enjoys the prestige of being a key name in the luxury watch segment. Universally acclaimed and present on the international stage, the brand proudly flies the “Made in Japan” banner.

Founded in 1881 by Hattori Kintaro, Seiko’s journey began as a wall clock manufacturer. However, a swift progression driven by an ambitious focus on micro clock-making, it rapidly diversified into assorted ventures. Today, watches still constitute 56% of the revenue, retaining their status as the primary business.

Renowned for its relentless pursuit of exceptional technological breakthroughs, Seiko continues to offer devices that are advanced and ahead of their time.

The English name “Seiko” is akin to the French “seikos”, meaning “exquisite, refined”, which has since become an emblem the brand unapologetically boasts of. Throughout its long history, Seiko has recurrently redefined the annals of horology with its invaluable innovative contributions, few of which are:

1969: Unveiling of the world’s first Quartz watch Astron.
1973: Introduction of the first digital wrist watch with a six-digit LCD display.
1975: The first multi-functional digital watch is rolled out along with the unveiling of the first titanium diving watch durable up to a water-depth of 600m.
1982: Launch of the first watch with inbuilt TV and radio.
1984: First computerized Quartz watch is introduced.
2012: Presenting of the world’s first solar-powered GPS watch.

A special bond with sports is cherished by the brand Seiko as it resonates with athletes’ benefits from technological advancement. You will find the brand establishing its presence across all major sporting events, partnering spotlighted athletes like tennis star Novak Djokovic.

In its consistent evolution, Seiko has amassed an extensive portfolio of brands and watch series under its name, targeting distinct customer segments. These include Astron, Prospex, Presage, Lukia, Seiko 5, Seiko Premier, and Grand Seiko. As of 2017, Grand Seiko is now a separate independent brand.

OneMall takes pleasure in presenting a select collection of Seiko watches – models that are a must-have!

1 – The Seiko ASTRON series. Equipped with GPS satellite positioning and solar-powered – Novak Djokovic 2020 Special Edition (Ref. SSH045J1). Limited edition of 1500 pieces.

The colour composition of the SH045 includes a triad of white, red, and blue. These colours symbolize the hues of the flags of both Japan (Seiko’s home country) as well as Serbia (Djokovic’s home country). Djokovic has been an official partner of Seiko since 2014, and in spite of the fact that he doesn’t wear a watch during his matches for sporting reasons, he is often seen with an Astron watch on his arm during award ceremonies and in his leisure time.

Besides Djokovic’s signature, the stainless-steel back includes a host of technical specifications – from the 100 meters water resistance, to the unique serial number, and the exact calibre of the 5X variant. All of this information provides essential technical data for potential consumers. The 5X53 gauge is the most state-of-the-art gauge by Seiko when it comes to GPS solar technology. In addition to an eternal calendar, the watch offers a global time display for 39 time zones, an automatic daylight saving time detection, a secondary time display, and a monthly deviation of only 15 seconds.
2 – SEIKO Prospex 55th Anniversary Limited Edition, released in September 2020 (Ref. SLA041J1). World-wide limited edition of 1100 pieces.

The PROSPEX series has always been admired by professional athletes. Under the motto “Strive for success, relentless adventurous spirit”, it embodies the athlete’s adventurous spirit! With its cutting-edge technical expertise, it develops the most reliable sports watches, aiming for perfect functionality under the toughest conditions.
The limited edition of the 55th Anniversary Divers watch, launched in 2020, represents the zenith of Seiko’s artisanal perfection, utilizing the latest standards and techniques. The watches comprise Seiko’s “Ever-Brilliant Steel”. “Ever-Brilliant Steel” is more resistant to corrosion than the stainless steel typically used for luxury watches, and also has a more beautiful shine. The recently launched Rado Captain Cook and the newest addition of the Black Bay 58, the BB58 Blue, are showcasing their charisma under water. The cases of the 1965 and 1968 re-edition and the bezel of the 1975 re-edition (the case is made out of the original titanium of the model) are the first timepieces in the industry made from “Ever-Brilliant Steel”. The 1965 and 1968 re-edition is powered by the High Beat 8L55, while the 1975 re-edition is driven by an 8L35.
3 – Presage series

Crowned the “Leading flagship series”, the Presage perpetuates SEIKO’s (Seiko) mechanical watchmaking tradition, leading the industry in quality with its unmatched craftsmanship. The watches of the Presage series amalgamate aesthetic aspects with Seiko’s professional expertise. Seiko Presage is affectionately adored by many fans, probably because of the enamel dial, which is not present in Swiss watches of this price range, albeit there is some difference in processing compared to higher end watches.
4 – SEIKO 5 Sports series. Limited to 9000 pieces.

Image

This series has consistently gained high attention over the past 50 years. The watches of the Seiko 5 Sports series all use updated cases, which are not only more attractive but much more durable and comfortable yet have added a new line of depth. All the watches come with Seiko’s own 4R36 automatic calibre.

The new SEIKO 5 Sports series debunks the usual notion of updated classics with its inception. With five different styles – sporty, elegant, professional, street style, and sexy – to choose from. The targeted audience and customers are now office workers or students, so these watches have recorded good sales figures on all channels since their launch. Hopefully, there will be more watches like the Seiko 5 Sports series in the future, which provide today’s consumers with good value for money and let them experience the classics of the past.

The model shown is one of the latest from a special edition in honour of the Queen guitarist Brian May. Its elegant design will surely convince all lovebirds of mechanical watches.
5 – Lukia series. Limited to 250 pieces.

Seiko presents the new Lukia series, celebrating the contemporary elegance and dynamism of Tokyo’s Ginza district. The six new models all come with mother-of-pearl dials, adorned with floral patterns and eight diamond indexes. The double-sided colouring of the dial lets the rich colours and iridescence blend harmoniously. The round, curved case fits perfectly on the wrist. All models are equipped with an anti-reflective sapphire glass and offer superior water resistance to 10 bars (100 meters). The translucent case back displays the action of the new Seiko 6R35 calibre. It pulses at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hertz) and offers an impressive power reserve of up to 70 hours. The new Lukia collection is suitable for any occasion and should be enjoyed on a daily basis.

The model featured marks the celebration of the international release of the Lukia collection (which until then was predominantly reserved for the Japanese market) in a specially limited edition of 250 copies (SPB141J1). A “Tsukishiro” (moon-white) colouring adorns the dial and mimics the blue-white sky of Ginza during the rising moon. The dial is decorated with 8 diamond indexes and the bezel consists of 55 diamonds. The strap’s distinct appearance is achieved by a two-stage colouring, in which the leather is first dyed white and then the pattern’s recesses are kept in a light blue shade.

The Lukia series exclusively targets female audiences, aiming to present an elegant Japanese aesthetic while simultaneously capturing the soul and sophistication of the model produced here in Tokyo’s Ginza district.
6 – Seiko Premier series

Image

The Premier series merges astute aspects of classic design with modern details and is SEIKO’s (Seiko) most significant fashionable watch model. Its design is inspired by the timeless beauties of neoclassical architecture: Classic yet modern, traditional yet boldly innovative.

The Seiko Premier series, designed for both men and women, showcases the brand’s pinnacle of design excellence and creativity.

They are available in dozens of models with solar, quartz, kinetic, and mechanical mechanisms. They are discernible by their fine finishes and clean lines.
GRAND SEIKO is a sub-brand of SEIKO (Seiko) and always represents Seiko’s finest craftsmanship. Since its incorporation in 1960, it has consistently retained GRAND SEIKO’s unique clear and elegant style, aiming to make it the “best practical timepiece in the world”. It also strives for maximum precision, legibility, and durability – the basic functions of a watch.

Since its introduction in 1960, the lion has served as the emblem of Grand Seiko, proudly etched on the case back of every Grand Seiko timepiece.

Even today, with Sapphire Crystal Casebacks, you can still make out the medallion of the lion etching in the crystal. It aspired to be the “queen of watches”, and the lion is known to be the “king of animals”.

There are five different collections of the Grand Seiko (Seiko) brand designed in collaboration with seasoned Japanese craftsmen and designers. After thorough research and designing, they were devised, their production is strictly controlled in Japan to ensure their exceptional quality.
Special mention: SEIKO’s excellent collaboration with Studio Ghibli themed after the Porco Rosso movie, two exquisitely designed watches (limited supply – Total 1100 pieces)
